  1. Sorry about the HUGE banner ad running at the top of the forum today.

This is apparently an experiment that Google decided to run...  I believe I have stopped this experiment, so hopefully it will stop showing soon.

Ads are a necessary evil to help pay the bills, but there has to be a happy medium.  This new ad is a bit much with everything else that is already running.  Sorry...

Ironic - the one site that I didn't mind paying to join doesn't ask for my money anymore while a hundred others I have no interest in hound me constantly.....:classic_wink:

We tried a donation type system years ago and it was a bit of nightmare on my end...  I know the ads can be somewhat intrusive at times, but they do help cover the costs of running this site, especially with these new vignette ads.  Unfortunately running a website like this isn't free (damn!).

Sorry not sorry. This site has been free since it's inception in 1999. The Ads are part of the user experience and a minor inconvenience to help us all enjoy interacting with the site. Its definitely way less intrusive than what occurs on youtube etc.

Yes, it is a minor inconvenience and I do believe that most of the users here understand that.  Personally I'd love to have no ads running on here, but it is much less stress on me knowing that when software and server bills come due, that I have  revenue to fall back on to help cover the expense.

  3. They are called Vignette ads.  Its a new ad format that is becoming more common on websites.

Sorry, but they help pay for the expense of running this website.

    From Google Adsense:

Vignette ads are full-screen ads that appear between page loads.

Vignettes are displayed when the user leaves a page, rather than when they arrive on one, so the user doesn’t have to wait for them to load.

We (Google) limit the number of vignettes per user to maintain a good user experience.

    Completely agree.

A guy on my bowling team said last week he thinks Tampa has the best covered stadium in baseball. I smiled, nodded, and bowled my frame.

I'll be in Arizona next week for their opening day on Thursday. Many people dislike that stadium, but I don't have any issues with it.  I've been there a few times now and have enjoyed my visits, with the ballpark roof open and closed.

There is something wrong with having a season open in that awful stadium.    What will their attendance be today, 16 K ?

    2022 TBR season opener 15, 515

    2019 TBR season opener 25,025

2018 TBR season opener 31,042 vs. the Red Sox (probably 20 K were Sox fans)

2017 TBR season opener 31,042 vs. the Yankees (probably 25 K Yankees fans)

Wait a minute, 31 K is the capacity there?

Get them out of there.  Nashville would sell out every Opening Day

I was there for opening day in 2015 against the Orioles.  31,042 in attendance.  I hate that ballpark...  Complete dump.

    GFY.

I have never maintained drafting Hooker as the only solution but as a combo of signing a vet (let's call him Wentz) on a 1-year contract as well as drafting Hooker as a future backup.

You don't like that idea so you're going to ridicule it?

    GFY.

You need to calm the F down....

  7. Some information about this site:

    1. This site is hosted on a virtual private server from LiquidWeb, a hosting company located in Lansing, MI.  I have used them for probably 15+ years now. Great service.
    2. Hosting costs have varied over the years, from a couple hundred a month when traffic levels were high (2007-2017) and lots of bandwidth was needed (on our own private server), to about $50 a month now on a multi-year agreement for a smaller shared server.
    3. Software used for this site is Invision Community.  We used vBulletin for many, many years, but I grew tired of it and had difficulties maintaining it at times.  I've had much better success with Invision and find it to be a much more polished program.  However, it does cost more than vBulletin, which I still have a lifetime paid license to use.  I'd rather pay yearly renewals for Invision at this point.

Starting a new message board today would be really difficult in my opinion.  Trends have changed and social media has made it tough for this type of community to grow and stay alive.  We're here today basically because way back in time we were once part of something much larger (the Detroit Tigers official website) and were able to use that to build a very loyal community which continues on today, despite many changes and moves over the years.  Without that, we wouldn't be here.

I read that Craig Monroe was going to do color in the booth with Shep for 100 games? He's the reason I turn the volume off during the games. Guy slurps when he talks like he has a constant mouth full of spit. And he just goes on and on and on....

    I was wrong. 130 games of that slobbering idiot;

Monroe is scheduled to work approximately 130 games, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, followed by Petry (approximately 100 games), Gibson (about 40 games), Maybin (about 30 games) and Jones (about 15 games).

    130 + 100 + 40 + 30 +15 = 315 games for the analysts.  Sounds like a 3 man booth with Shepard's play by play.  Or maybe the 315 includes the pre & post game shows?  I don't know.

I believe Petry, Maybin and Jones will be primarily doing the desk work for the pre and postgame shows.  Monroe and Gibson will be doing the both work.  I'd assume when Gibson is in, Monroe might be back on the desk for those games, or maybe off.

Yeah it seem like there's sufficient room on the other side honestly so I dunno why they are sharing a side line.

I'm not sure if available room is the issue on the one sideline... my thought is it might be more of an issue with fan sightlines.  There are only so many seats in Fenway and it would stink to lose more because the lower seats along that area would have their view blocked by players/coaches and equipment.

Also... what are the conditions on the "conditional" pick?

I read that if the Vikings win a playoff game this year, the conditional pick becomes a 5th rounder.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the 2024 fourth-round pick from the Lions will convert to a fifth-round pick if the Vikings win a playoff game.

He was already looking like a train wreck with throwing his mouth guard at a fan and his drug using social media posts. And now this.

I'm happy that Weaver has chosen to build a team of good character players that I can enjoy rooting for.

Based on his rap video, seems like a classy guy...

This is exactly what I was talking about! Where we could see the links all together on the same page. If we could re-do this, I'd definitely upvote that.

The individual team websites I created are the replacement for the news feeds that used to be part of the MotownSports website.  I don't intend to make them a part of MotownForums.com, as this website will just contain the forum software.  Please visit the other sites as I'm sure you will find them much better than what was previously available on the old website.

I'm going to hazard a guess and say he's talking about how when you went to motownsports.com there was a page with articles from the four teams. You then had to click visit forums to continue to the forums. I did a Google image search and found what I think he is talking about. Looks like we still have them but the pages are under each team now in the forum.

This site (MotownForums.com) is nothing more than message forum software.  If you desire to read stories specific to each of the four Detroit professional teams, I have built separate websites for each team that are much better than the setup we had within the website portion of the old MotownSports website. All four sites pull in news feeds from throughout the internet specific to each team and are a great resource for finding team related news/stories.

I have links to them throughout this forum, either in the side bar on the main forum page or through the links on the top of each individual team forum.  You can also find the links under the heading "Motown Sports Network" in the main header on the forum.

Each site was built for a specific audience and links back to this forum.  It is my hope that these sites will help push new people to these forums and allow us to continue to grow.

    Or as seen below:

    MotownLions.com
    MotownPistons.com
    MotownRedWings.com
    MotownTigers.com

  14. I'm not sure I fully understand your question...  It is a likely possibility that anything that was enabled on the previous site would be an option here since this is the same software, although a few versions ahead now.  Are you talking about the RSS feeds you can access for each forum, such as this for the Tigers forum:

    https://www.motownforums.com/forum/3-detroit-tigers.xml/?member=1&key=244d43054b54f56362c77956ff957f07

If you are talking about something else, I guess I need a little more detail to better understand what I might have setup previously and have now forgotten.  It happens with old age... 🙂
