I looked this up a few months ago, but basically what happened in their amazing 2024 season was that the offense was so efficient they ended up with well over 100 more carries that season than they had in 2025. Gibbs’s workload basically stayed the same but most of the lost carries went against Montgomery. Maybe they will try to give Gibbs a few more carries, but I suspect they will use him about the same as a RB but mix him more into the passing game. Pacheco will take the leftovers.

The idea of Gibbs getting the ball in the open field has me excited for Lions football. Let's go!!

The Lions didn't hold up their end of the agreement so yes Arnold keeps the signing bonus.

Obviously I just a fan talking, but I think that this might depend on the specifics of the contract. If there's a clause in there about actions detrimental to the team they Lions might be able to void the contract and that might include recouping some of the signing bonus. Again: Just speculating.

Also have to hope giving Gibbs even as little as 1.5x the workload doesn’t cause extra wear and tear.

According to Google Gibbs was already getting 66-74% of the snaps vs. 31-37% for Monty last year.

Maybe he’ll be fine then. Our backup is no Montgomery so we need him for the full season.

I saw Rasul Douglas mentioned as a free agent CB that is still out there and available...

I want.

At the very least... for depth. But methinks he would make a hard push for CB2. My theory would be the best 2 out of 3 between Rakestraw, Douglas, and Reed are the outside CB's. And I would feel 100% better at outside CB depth for this season with all three.

Let the best two CB's start...

Just my 2 cents.

Ya-Sin is probably CB2 right now.

Honestly I think it might be Rakestraw. We’ve just never seen him. If he was a second round pick this past April it’d be his job to lose. I don’t think two seasons lost to injury will have dropped that presumption, unless they have also caused a loss of talent.

Pride of Detroit was talking about Denzel Ward from the Browns as an Arnold replacement. Ward probably costs us a 2nd round pick, but he's a quality veteran starter on a pretty good defense in Cleveland.

Great. Now who are you cutting to fit him under the cap? There aren't many options.

Rasul Douglas is free though... just money... on a 1-year contract would be great, IMO.

As for Denzel Ward... I don't believe he'll be available prior to the trade deadline, at least until Cleveland knows whether it has a chance at a winning record or not, or until they've fallen apart this season...

Only then will they be looking to offload a vet or two... IMO.

So Ward is NOT an option, today, imo.

Talking in hypotheticals, there are multiple contracts that could be restructured to comfortably create a lot more cap room. They already restructured Goff, but ASB could free another $21MM. Sewell could free another $15MM.

Of course, those moves just punt the problem down the road. I don’t think it’s what they’ll do, but I’ve been surprised before.

How much cap space do we have right now?

$14 million. Ward would cost $17 million this year and $20 million next year. The Lions wouldn't take the full brunt of Ward's $30 million cap hit because the trade is post June 1st. The Lions still need a buffer to sign players in case of injury and to roll over to next year for free agents and to re-sign Laporta, Gibbs and Branch. They don't have $20 million in cap space for a 30 year old CB.

The Lions would be paying that price when 30 year old Ward isn't on the team anymore and they are trying to pay Gibbs and Laporta. There's a reason Cleveland would likely take a 2nd for him. He's getting up in age for a CB and has a big contract.

No thank you.

That's enough... that's it.

If Douglas can be had on a 1-year budget-conscious contract I would do that.

Otherwise... we probably will at least let training camp play out...

Oh...

The same people I was going to cut when I wanted Trey Hendrickson. No one. I'm restructuring the remaining $12 or so million on the Goff deal, plus restructuring Sewell and St. Brown as needed. The money is there if the Lions want it to be. I would hate to go into the season, onein which we should be a Super Bowl contender, with DJ Reed plus question marks at CB2.

Restructures are not free money.

Right. We all know this. Ward is on the second-to-last year of his contract. You can restructure a deal to bring him in under the cap for this year and next. You'll get money, albeit a small amount, coming off the books from not having Arnold here and not extending him.

Restructured contracts on your teams balance sheet of course runs the risk of kicking the financial can down the road and having it all come due at once. The Lions ran into this problem when Martin Mayhew was GM. But this roster built by Brad Holmes, unlike Mayhew's, is good enough to contend for a Super Bowl. So why not take a swing on a guy like Ward to help a depleted CB position and go all in for a Super Bowl. This is a team and roster worth going for it all with.

As much as some of us might want a true, veteran replacement for Arnold, this is an organization that values next man up. They want the next person they've drafted or already signed to step up and take the reigns. I suspect it will be next man up for guys like Ya-Sin, Rakestraw, and McCreary to take that #2 CB spot.
