Wasn't Mize supposed to pitch Sunday in Chicago? If he hasn't been activated, some player is still on the team, hanging by a thread. Jones?

Yes, he was slated for Sunday. I guess who ever else is slated to walk the plank will be doing it on Wednesday.

I guess a pitcher would have to go?

Mize would be their 13th pitcher.  They usually keep 13 pitchers, 13 position players.

When it comes to the whole 13-13 thing, I assume the players would like to expand the rosters just in principle, and the managers might like the additional flexibility it gives them, especially somebody like AJ, but I can see the owners balking at that.

I think any additional players would all be small wage guys, and rather than being prospects, who have to play every day to develop, they would be AAAA guys fulfilling specific roles such as ... well, lefty-killing RHH. Waiver wires would go crazy under something like a 29-player roster scheme.

Here's a thought: what if the next CBA introduced a formal 26-slot active roster backed by a three-slot "swing roster", meaning 29 players in total operating within a structured big league roster framework? Maybe the three swing spots rotate week-to-week, minimum seven-day commitment to either the big club or AAA. Players in swing spots would earn at least MLB minimum regardless of location and accrue full service time throughout—I don't know, maybe a negotiated contract or arb salary when up, and major league minimum when down. This would be distinct from the COVID taxi squad which was an emergency measure with no service time or salary implications. The realistic population for these spots would be fringe quad-A guys and veterans hanging on rather than actual prospects, since there are service time issues for them, plus there's already the option system for in force there.

For teams, the appeal is roster flexibility without burning options and a cleaner alternative to IL-stint roster manipulation. For players, it's guaranteed MLB minimum and full service time for players who exist in this murky option-system limbo. Most swing roster candidates would already be on the 40-man, so the union's gain is less about expanding protections than formalizing and improving terms for players who currently have neither career clarity nor negotiating leverage. I acknowledge that the idea is half-baked but is there any there there?

I have a bad back too. But I’m 74 years old so I have an excuse and I also had a catastrophic back injury 43 years ago that gets worse with age.

Not catastrophic like yours, just annoying.

I have a rib injury from kickoff return in the fall of 19 and 74.   It still occasionally "pops" out of place, my kids and now my grand kids learned how to step on my back and put it back right.    When they're young it intrigues them to feel it move, but then they grow up.

I have a lower rib on the left side that was cracked in a car accident when I was 17 and there’s times it pokes out and man it pokes out 1/2 of an inch and it’s not so much painful as it is ugly and revolting, but I’ve figured out how to twist myself into a position where it pops back into place, so heck it is what it is

Ouch....my back just stiffens up to the point where I have to walk for a bit to even move. And I'm "only," 66 years old. I imagine it wont get much better.
