Tigermojo Posted June 16 Posted June 16 August 3 at 6:00 pm. Most of the discussion will be about Skubal and pending free agents but I'll start us off with a wrench in the works. SF is already shopping players. Tigers could look to add Matt Chapman? Quote
chasfh Posted June 16 Posted June 16 Honestly, I think it's still a little early to determine whether Harris is going to be making calls or taking calls, but if he does end up making calls, Chapman would be an intriguing add. He's crushing it this year and he's signed for four more after this. Max is obviously untouchable, but since we would be buying high, I don't think they would take less than three of Rainer, Briceno, Anderson, Rodriguez, and Yost. But even then, we have no pitching to offer in a we-buy trade, and the Giants need pitching. I think we are in a tough spot as far as that goes with everyone we'd buy from, but especially the Giants. If Harris does end up taking calls, he's going to want a major league-ready piece, I would guess a pitcher, in addition to at least one system-ranked prospect with a later due date, and maybe a lottery ticket. No, they cant. Not with their payroll. 1 Quote

Don't overestimate how much a couple of months of Skubal is worth. I doubt many teams would give us a pitcher under team control. Maybe a #4 or #5 type, at best. We would be better off getting highly ranked prospects. If L.A. has some players who may be blocked, we would gladly take them off their hands. But, TBH. my choice would be to keep Skubal. Cy Young award winning type pitchers aren't easy to find... Quote

No interest in Chapman. I want to cheer the ascent of players, not lament the decline of players. We've had enough of that in this town. 2 1 Quote

If he somehow does trade Skubal, I really hope he gets players that end up better than how the prospects we got for JV ended up. A very low bar to clear. 😅😅 Quote

monkeytargets39 Posted June 17 Posted June 17 The competitive balance tax is going to really be worth keeping an eye on as far as what additions and subtractions we make. Quote
Tenacious D Posted June 17 Posted June 17 (edited) You can buy and sell at the same time. This team is squarely in this space. You trade Skubal if you are convinced you can’t resign him. Freeing up his salary allows us to take on another (I.e., Tatis, Jr). We’re not going to tank—just retool. Edited June 17 by Tenacious D Quote

So now we're gonna speculate on Harris making two blockbuster trades? 🤣🤣🤣 Quote

Sports_Freak Posted June 17 Posted June 17 Just now, NorthWoods said: It could be 3 if you count the Mize deal. Harris made his biggest trade in 2023 when he traded Lorenzen. Then in '24 when he traded Flaherty. Other than that? Not many deals. Quote
NorthWoods Posted June 17 Posted June 17 But hes under pressure now. 1. Scott Harris, Detroit Tigers He'll make the call on whether Detroit will deal the most coveted starting pitcher in almost two decades, American League Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal, and it probably won't be an easy decision due to the mediocrity of the AL https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/49074520/mlb-2026-execs-most-stake-pressure-trade-deadline-stearns-breslow-posey-harris-hoyer Quote

SoCalTiger Posted June 17 Posted June 17 It is entirely possible that come mid July we are both under .500 AND still within 3 games of the wild card. How do you sort that out. For me I'm still all in. 1 Quote

The season is not even half over yet. 1 Quote

The closest I can find to anything like this happening was when the 2014 Red Sox sold Jon Lester and Jonny Gomes to the A's so they could buy Yoenis Cespedes, who was an established big leaguer by that time but was still controllable. In this case, though, the Red Sox were not selling expiring assets and buying controllable assets so they could make the playoffs—they were firmly in last place in the East, and would end up finishing there, so I think this was still a straight sell. This move completely blew up in the A's faces, since they went from far and away having the best record in baseball on July 31 to getting run out of the playoffs in the wild card game by the eventual pennant-winning Royals. monkeytargets39 Posted June 17 Posted June 17 (edited) You don’t have to give up on the season, but you have to make decisions based off of the reality of the situation. This is a flawed team that has a lot of work to do if they want to get in a position to make the playoffs. We are extremely limited in what we can do to add impact players and most of those moves would hurt our future outlook. Let’s say we stand pat and magically win the World Series. Would it be amazing? Yes of course. But we’d still have Skubal, Mize, Flaherty, Torres, Jansen and Rogers all hitting free agency and now with even higher price tags making re-signing any of them very unlikely. Unknowns in terms of Jobe and Olson. No pitching help coming up in the minors to replace anyone. At best you’d get Clark and Anderson up for next season. A Skubal trade and a Mize trade-if done properly—can net us badly needed pieces that we could build into our core for the next 6+ years. With how this season has gone, accepting the disappointment and making appropriate plans to make some moves and address weaknesses going forward is easily the right move to make. AlaskanTigersFan Posted June 17 Posted June 17 Posted this in the Skubal thread, but I'll post it here too: I'm sticking with my prediction for Skubal: De Paula Sirota (Rather have Quintero than both of these guys but meh) River Ryan Brady Smith ________________________________ As for Casey Mize, I think we could get back a #3 type starter for him. Here's something to consider: Would you trade Casey Mize and Bryce Rainer for Seth Hernandez? Pittsburgh could be making a run for it and could use some pitching in return (I have them as a sleeper for Skubal). I'd really have to consider this one though. But we do have Yost coming up who could be a better defender than Rainer and Seth Hernandez with Jobe and Melton could be a pretty powerful 1-2-3 starting base. I'd have to think on that one though. I think Bryce could be a stud.... but Hernandez could be a MONSTER too...... Quote
gehringer_2 Posted June 17 Posted June 17 I always think back to the Twins with Santana. That wasn't a deadline deal but it shows what can go wrong for both teams in such a situation. Santana only lasted three seasons after the deal and the Mets didn't get into the post season with him. The Twins actually got one young player back who had more than twice the career WAR that Santana had with the Mets, but the Twins gave up on him and dealt him for very little before he broke through (Carlos Gomez) so they basically got nothing. And then ronically, they weren't any worse as a team in the couple of years after losing Santana - getting to the playoffs while the Mets sat at home. 1 Quote
