My opinion that Jim has been way off his game since his hiatus in late May still stands, though.

I agree. I was listening with my last night and told her it was time for Jim to hang up his spikes. She asked me how long he had been with the Tigers, and I said on and off since 1967. She said if you were the same team 55 + years you started, and you were in your 80's still doing what you loved, would you quit?

    She has a point.

Dan didn't say why he's out, just that he's out all weekend.

I heard Dan say two games ago he was taking an extended All-Star break and enjoy some family time in west Michigan.

Probably his first true summer vacation in 30+ years.

Thoughts on Jim and Greg: Greg interrupted Jim several times early in the game yesterday,  so they don't have their timing down at all. Later in the game Greg got better by asking Jim questions and letting him speak. I just think Greg likes to talk a whole lot and fill all the space. Does anyone know if he is solo in Erie? That may have a lot to do with it.

  3. First time I get to hear Olson pitch, and we have a rain delay.

The photo up top reminds me how much I miss Ernie.  I grew up with Ernie and Paul, my kids grew up listening to  Dan and Jim. Now that I have three grandkids,  all under the age of 3, I wonder who they will be listening to in a few years.

I think Dan will be around forever, like Ernie. I think this will be Jim's last season. I really like both Andy and Cameron with Dan. Both seem natural and a good fit. I think Bobby has a lot of work to do to get the full time gig. Or it could be someone completely off the radar.

As it stands now, who would you guys like to replace  Jim?

  4. Tim Brookens

What a baseball family that was. 3 brothers and two cousins played minor league ball. Two, Ike and Tom, made it to the majors.

Another useless fact, Tim, Tom, and Ike were in the Tigers' system at the same time.

I think UofM is your connection. A lot of their analytics hires are from UM and the team does have some kind of a partnership there. Fetter didn't exactly burn bridges. If he lives locally and showed interest in the job and is pretty smart, why not? He has recent front office experience, is involved with SABR. I'm looking forward to him calling games, tbh.

So far, I'm liking his input. He doesn't sound too polished in the booth, but I think that will come. Already 10x than Monroe on the radio.

  6. I did a little research on this, and was brought up in the media as early as 2013. So this isn't a new idea or link.

From 2010-2015 I was president of a small non-profit that raised funds for brain tumor and research. Mostly we focused on patients. Giablastomas are rare among the  total population and if you have to get a brain tumor, it is the last one you want. Deadly and an average life span of 18 months after diagnosis.

What is interesting to me beyond the Philadelphia players, the other well-known major leaguers who died from  a GB played on artificial turf for a good part of their careers as well: Gary Carter in Montreal, Dick Howser and Dan Quisenberry in KC. Ken Brett also spent time in KC as well.as Philly.

It will take years of research to prove that there is a link, if it can ever be proved.

I do wonder though if there has been an abnormal amount of Phillies who died of other cancers at an early age. The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Tom Underwood,  who died of pancreatic cancer in 2010.
