I lean now towards him knowing... no, it doesn't matter.  But these missions are planned very carefully and crew emotion and stability is so important on a trip this long, they wouldn't throw that at him unexpected.  They are on their way back now.  The moon has moved out of the zone they occupied in their loop around.
