Campbell and Holmes signed 6 year contracts because they knew this would be a long process. This is Quinn's roster and they had to trade their franchise QB. They will be given some leeway even if they go 0-17. At worst I could see them firing Lynn.

This is correct.   Lynn will be the scapegoat if one is needed

campbell going for it consistently on 4th down has been great.  good to see it.  the special teams trickery against the rams was great.

he has a team with nothing and is trying to generate possessions and points wherever he can.  the alternative is for every game to be like the eagles game.

the lions have executed poorly because they are a bad team with not many talented players and a horrific player at the most important position in the game.  i dont think that's bad coaching, i think that's bob quinn being a bad general manager.

I believe they execute poorly in short yardage because the coaching staff keeps trying to outsmart the other team by rushing to the line to try and catch them off guard and instead hurt their own execution.   It’s dumb.  If he wants to go on 4th down, slow it down and get them on the same page and call a great play.   How many more times are they going to continue this idiotic trend of going no huddle, up tempo on game changing plays and failing.

I'm more about being able to get rid of the last remnants of the Quinn regime such as Flowers and Vaitai. Both can be cut and free up cap space. The Lions are looking really good cap wise for 2023. They will be able to get out of the Goff contract, and the only player on the current roster right now that would be in line for a salary increase/extension is Hockenson.

This we can agree.  No need to worry about dead cap for next year and use it to clear the dead weight that won’t be part of 2023 and beyond.

  4. Just watched the end of the half again and it’s a combination of all the issues I had with Campbell.   Despite a few dumb penalties, they had a nice drive going.   Sitting 2nd and 5 from the Eagles 26 with 2 TO’s.   Goff checks down like always to Swift and he fails to get out of bounds a yard short of the marker with 34 seconds left.  Rather than call a TO on 3rd down and set a play to get the 1st and a plan a few end zone shots, he rushes to the line with the clock running and trying to catch them off guard and for the umpteenth time this season the Lions don’t execute while rushing to the line for a crucial play.   Goff hands to Swift who doesn’t get the first down.   Instead of sitting 3rd and 1 on the 21 with 34 seconds they are 4th and inches on the 20 with 13 seconds.  I would’ve kicked the FG here but the mistake was already made. If he wanted to go for a TD they needed to call TO on 3rd down and preserve time and downs.

  5. What does it really matter how much dead cap they have next year?  It’s not like they are going to get out and spend on big FA additions next year.   They need to make sure they are in a good cap position for 2023.

Campbell has already said they have an analytics guy who tells them whether to go for it on 4th down.

I'm old enough to remember when the complaints against Caldwell were that he was too conservative.

I am sure they have a guy.  I am not so sure that Campbell uses him as he should.   I think he puts the info into whatever else is in his mind and then goes by his gut.

I am also not concerned about conservative vs aggressive.  I want him to make the right choices depending on the situation.   Yes, he is starting to remind me of Caldwell on game day and that’s not good.    If Jim was better between the lines when it counted then maybe he’s still the coach today.   That was his big weakness.

The odds we lose the next nine games remains less than us finishing 1-16 or 2-15. Regardless of how poor we looked yesterday.

Steelers, Bears, Vikings, and Falcons are all winnable games if the Lions team that went 60 minutes punch for punch returns instead of the team that rolls over and dies at the first sign of adversity.

I don’t recall any games where they went 60 minutes punch for punch with anyone.    They have played well at times but haven’t come close to putting together a full game.

My personal expectations of this team were very low and have only gotten worse.  The talent was never there and this was always going to a rebuild.  As for Campbell, this didn’t mean a free pass, it meant that I wasn’t going to judge him on W-L record.  He is essentially a first time head coach and there were big questions how he was going to handle preparation and game day.  I am growing concerned that he makes poor decisions and continues to double down on them even when they don't work.   He has literally been doing the same things and hoping for a different result.

There is absolutely no rhyme or reason for why he goes for it or not on 4th down.   This seems to be based on his gut feel. He also continues to try and go quick, up tempo whenever they get into a 3rd or 4th and short with the hope that it will confuse the other team and instead it is the Lions that get confused and don’t convert.  This has happened multiple times this season and there is still no adjustment.    There have also been some horrible clock management at the end of half and games.   The drive before halftime was another example of huge gaffes with playcall and TO management in a 17-0 game.

I like his attitude and I haven’t given up but there still needs to be some coaching acumen no matter how much the players and fans love his rah rah.  We saw how this combination worked before with Rod Marinelli and nobody wants a repeat of that.

I'm gonna give you a can of Alpo and some moldy bread with a handful of shredded cheese.   Make a good meal out of it.

He's got nothing, man.  Just nothing.

Tater summed up my thoughts almost exactly.    I’m growing concerned about his game management and decision making.

I said at the start of the season that I wasn't going to be hard or overly critical on Campbell or this regime because of how new everyone was and how awful this roster was. That said, Campbell has made a number of troubling coaching mistakes and outright blunders. Anyone beginning to question his coaching IQ isn't really wrong because he hasn't given fans a whole lot of reason to think otherwise.

Why does Dan Campbell get so many passes for all of his coaching mistakes? Serious question. 20 yard pass play called back because of illegal formation. 12 men on the field penalty...twice. not taking the points (AGAIN??) and not making the first down. Coaching mistakes over and over, every week. But the fans and the media give Campbell a pass because he has a lack of talent. Just....why?

Agree. He’s all talk and no substance.

i like the draft picks.  everything else was a shot in the dark and none of them have paid off.  charles harris has been ok, i guess.

Anzalone has done what they wanted him to do after a slow start.

But he didn't bring a public charge against Aldrich at the time. According to today's NPR story, Beech said it was the criminal charge in MI against Aldrich that persuaded him he could bring a case that where "It was no longer my word against everybody else's," so he apparently continued to believe the Black Hawks would circle the wagons if he had brought a more public accusation at the time.

according to the same story he is a pro in Germany. I suppose if he were that good he would have come to some other team's attention. He isn't making the charge that the NHL has blackballed him...so far.

Beach talks in the interview about how he became a different person after this happened.   He was more difficult to be around, abused alcohol and drugs, and was a much worse individual than before the assault and the teams decision to do nothing about it.    I think that damaged his chances at an NHL career more than being blackballed.

Additionally, I am truly sickened that once again as was the case with Sandusky,  Nassar, and Anderson, an organizations decision to quietly push away an abuser to avoid making a big story allowed that predator to continue adding new victims for years and years after it should’ve been stopped.

he didnt say enough politically correct tag lines of sorrow and remorse, so he gets dragged.  again, he should have done what debrincat did and basically throw bowman and everyone else under the bus to save himself.  that's what you do.  and he should have had someone there to tell him to do it.  that was my point.

toews is a public figure, and to keep his reputation in tact, he needs to keep his public image.  and that means throwing all the blame on bowman et al even if bowman is his friend.  bowman would probably understand.

that's how the game is played.

The first sentence wasn’t needed.   I get frustrated too at the depths that the woken will try to take cancel culture but in this case JT messed up and deserved to get dragged.   You have perfectly outlined what he needed to say and he did almost the exact opposite.

I think the real reason he is excited is cause he knows its going to feel like a day off covering our receivers and facing our qb.

I see no reason why Slay won’t get a very warm welcome from Lions fans.   He didn’t do anything wrong.  Just another dude in a long line of dudes that Quintricia mistakenly thought the franchise would be better off without.

  14. You’ve got to assume that Tucker will play 8 in the box and challenge UM to beat them passing.   The risk here is that both Corum and Haskins have the ability to make a man miss and they are off for a long 6.  Also wont be surprised to see UM try to run a handoff pitch back flea flicker and catch MSU sleeping.    Neither of these teams has really been tested since the B10 has proven to be so weak so it’s possible that one or both are frauds no worth their ranking like we saw with like Iowa, Wisconsin, and Penn State.      I think MSU has better skill players but UM will win this game.    Harbaugh hyped up Erick All to be one of the best TE ever at UM and he’s instead been a complete nobody thus far.   I think he catches 2 TD’s and is the hero.
