I'm not calling Hooker Joe Burrow. But.

He was on a Burrow-like trajectory with what he was doing at Tennessee until he tore his ACL. He was a Heisman contender on a 9-1 Tennessee team and then he went down and everyone saw his age and injury and shied away.

I'm not calling Hooker Joe Burrow. He was probably never going to go 1.1 because of his age and Young/Stroud being there. But the upside is there, and if he had stayed healthy and won the Heisman, he's probably looking at going #4 to the Colts. In the 3rd round, even if the worst case scenario comes to fruition and he never even sees the field, it's a 3rd round bust. Kind of like Iffy is looking like.

If it wasn't clear, I'm not calling Hooker Joe Burrow.

I think the thing I hate most is going to be listening to radio folks call for Hooker to start the moment Goff plays bad or the Lions lose a game.

Don't listen to the radio.  That's a stupid fan problem, not a roster building problem.

I like Hendon Hooker pick. A guy that "might" have gone in the 1st round. We can develop him. Save 8 mil a year at least in cap space for Bridgewater as a backup. I'll take that.

This frees up even more money to extend Goff with.

It would be a wasted pick if he doesn't end up a starter, it creates a QB controversy, and still doesn't solve the backup QB position in the short term.

He's a fine backup, given how durable Goff is since I read somewhere repeatedly that he never misses a game.  No controversy, it's a 3rd round QB.  He can take kneel downs as well as anyone.

I blew through my reactions today this morning, so I think I'll start creating my own. For this post:

Way to take it out of context.

"He is in the Austin Hooper mold and projects as a low-end TE1 or high-end TE2 on an NFL depth chart."

And evading the question. Who do you see as our TE1?

That was literally what he meant.  I saw that too and immediately got his joke.  Relax.

Mayer is a quasi slot receiver. He doesn't excel as a blocker and while he's a phenomenal route runner and pass receiver, he didn't make sense for how we use our TEs.

LaPorta is an athlete, and will still run those routes and catch those passes, but he'll also kick your ass in the blocking game.

    Weaknesses
    • Inconsistent angles and accuracy as blocker in space.
    • Takes the worst of it as lead blocker.
    • Has trouble getting to square contact on the move.
    • Needs to work back to meet the throw.
    • Below average catch success when challenged.
    • Allows defender angles to contest the throw.
    • Needs to get hands catch-ready more quickly.
