Really not interested in Brunson. Can you imagine a lineup of Cade, Brunson, Bey, Paolo, and Stewart? That will easily be the least athletic lineup in the entire NBA. On top of the lack of athleticism, I've been watching Brunson in the playoffs and he looks more like a sixth man of the year candidate to me. The kind of guy you bring off of your bench, give him the ball, and let him go to work while everyone else stands around watching him on offense, because he doesn't bring much else and isn't an off the ball player. Only 17% of his shots were catch and shoot. 29% of his shots come off of 7+ dribbles and another 34% come off of 3-6 dribbles. He pounds the the ball and creates offense for himself. Great for the Mav's "your turn, my turn" offensive system...and probably something Casey would love since that's his offensive scheme as well (see Toronto), but not what I want to see for this team. On top of that, it seems like they want to be a switch everything defensive team like Boston and Miami. Ok, but you have to have switchable personnel for that scheme to work. We saw how bad that was with a tiny guy like CoJo last year - teams just targeted him every time down the court - and Brunson is 2" shorter. I just don't see how paying him 25M a year is going to help this team be better. If we don't land Jabari, I really hope we wind up with one of the athletic guards (Sharpe, Ivey, Mathurin) so we don't feel compelled to pursue Brunson. Of course, from what JEIII has been saying the organization is really high on Murray, so even if we fall out of the top 3, we may wind up taking Murray over one of those guards anyway.

Our best chance to get a little more value for Grant is Portland. They have a lotto pick in a weak draft, a trade exception, a desperate need to add talent so their star doesn't demand a trade, and all kinds of rumors that Lillard and Grant are tight and that Dame wants Grant in Portland. That team is up against a wall, so they might be willing to part with a bit more than Grant's value to get him.

That Bucks/Celtics series is a lot of fun, but man, they are letting them get physical in that series. Giannis getting away with some Lebron level offensive fouling while Tatum gets absolutely mugged on the other end. Also, that chase down block attempt by Giannis where he wrecked Tatum should've been a Flagrant 2 by the standard set with the Brooks call. Hit a defenseless player from behind and wiped him out under the basket. Instead it's a common foul because you can't eject Giannis and because Tatum didn't land as awkwardly as GP. I love the the physical play and it's a great reminder of the difference between the regular season and the post-season. I just wish it was whistled more consistently across games, across players, and across the entire season.
-
No kidding. When they interviewed Kerr during the game and he called it "dirty" I was like, "what?". It just looked like an attempted chase down block that failed. He was clearly going for the ball and accidentally caught GP's head because he didn't manage to jump high enough to get the ball. It's a full speed play and guys try to get chase down blocks all the time. GP just landed awkwardly. Clearly a Flagrant 1 because of contact to the head, but I didn't think it was a Flagrant 2 and I thought Draymond's hit to the face followed by a pull down was way worse.

Big men are getting played off the court left and right in the playoffs. I wouldn't count on someone like Bagley who can barely manage average defense on a good day to be effective in the post season. Guys like Bam who are highly switchable (no Center was switched on to a guard more in the NBA...Stewart was 3rd on the list) or someone like Embiid who dominates on the offensive end will always have a spot. But someone like Bagley...nope. You could hope for him to become a 20 minute instant offense guy who gives you more points than he allows, but I'm not sure he has that level of potential. As Del said, use him now as you're getting better and keep searching for a real playoff piece down the line.
-
Exactly. You're not drafting Smith for athleticism. He won't dribble by anybody or create any offense using his athleticism. You're drafting him for his shot-making - which is elite. Don't get me wrong, I still take him #1 overall, but not because he's an athletic rim runner in any way. On the other hand, if he's gone when its our turn to pick (or if we get the Portland pick) I want one of the athletes (Ivey, Sharpe, or Mathurin). I'm sure Murray will be a fine player, but he's a low ceiling, safe pick. I'd prefer to swing for another star next to Cade, especially if we have 2 picks.

That Memphis/GS series has been crazy good so far.
-
I just need whoever comes out of that series to be strong enough to beat Philly if they make it through Toronto and Miami.
-
This got me out of my seat when I saw it. I backed up the DVR to watch it in live speed three times. Pistons need some of this in their lineup. Give me Ivey, Sharpe, or Mathurin please.
-
Yup. It was fun to watch. However, unlike Drummond, Adams, Gobert, and others who are getting played off the court, Embiid is too dominant on the offensive end to get benched for long stretches (or an entire series like Adams) in the playoffs. This is today's NBA. Much as it annoyed me when Casey did it all year because we don't have the personnel for it (I'm looking at you, Corey Joseph), lineups that can switch everything like Boston are the playoff formula.
-
Much as I'd love for the Pistons to make a change because I can't stand Casey's X's and O's, lineups, or in-game strategy, he's not going anywhere until he's ready to leave. That will probably happen in the next 2-3 years, with him taking a front office or a scouting role with the Pistons, but for now Weaver and Gores both seem happy with the positive things he brings to the table for this young team (player development and a strong locker room even when you're losing).

I'm not really interested in Paulo or Chet, but if we get one of them, I'll hope for the best. I don't have faith that Chet will be anything more than an oddity who well underperforms his draft position. Paulo, on the other hand, I think will be the type of player that puts up enough regular season numbers against certain types of competition that it takes your franchise too long to realize he's not good enough (Drummond syndrome). Can you imagine a lineup of Cade, Brunson, Bey, Paulo, and Stew? That has to be the least athletic lineup in the entire league. I'd prefer Smith, Ivey, Sharpe, or Mathurin. If we wind up getting Chet or Paulo with our pick, I truly hope we get Portland's pick to add whichever of these athletic guards is available (Smith will be gone by then).

I'm actually glad it was Scottie, because it just makes it more comical and obvious what this was about. There's no real need to try to argue about stats with this result. It's clear this year's award was a Narrative War and the Raptors recent success put Scottie at the top of the narrative.
-
This. I know we need a big man as well, particularly if we trade Grant, but we've got to find a way to add one of the dynamic guards in this draft to the team (Ivey, Mathurin, Sharpe). My dream draft gets us Jalen Smith with our pick and then Mathurin or Sharpe with Portland's pick.
-
Definitely the wild card in this draft. What people see as a lack of a true star in this draft, plus Sharpe's draft position, could really make this a wild one. I'm looking forward to some weird surprises in the draft order this summer.

Another Center getting played off the court in the playoffs. Sorry, Rudy, you can't play in this series. Mavs are just going to bomb open threes all day and you're not dominant on the offensive end to make up for it like an Embiid or Jokic. This is the NBA now. Teams will just go 5 out against a traditional Center, even the former DPOY.

That Memphis game - I was about to flip over to the Dallas/Utah game and then suddenly it did a 180. So much fun to watch. And yep, KAT is such a fake star.
-
The Kennard pick was the one that I'll never let go. It was so obvious that Mitchell was the pick. Things were a bit more murky with SJ. Most people wanted Winslow (myself included) when he fell to us.

Doesn't help that Booker went out with a hamstring injury. He had 31 in the first half before leaving. Suns aren't winning a championship without Booker, let's see how long this injury lingers.
-
Marcus Smart is the guy I tend to think of when I imagine where Killian could take his career with the tools I've seen him display. You can see the defensive potential and I think Killian is already a better passer than Marcus, but can he take his defense to the next level and also get his three point shot to a respectable point? That's going to be the question for the 20 year old over the next season or two. If so, then he can become a highly valuable bench PG that might close games due to his defense.
-
Who are the big money or top 5 pick centers that can do that? You might find one or two but not sure that gamble is worth it when you’re better off spending that money/pick on a perimeter player in this league and getting a bargain Center that can fill a role.
-
And it begins already. Clippers getting beat down in the first half. The adjustment? Bench the Center so you can switch more easily against Ingram and CJ. Clippers go on a huge run and take the lead immediately. NO getting beat in the second half and what do they do? Bench their Center (JV - arguably their 3rd best player) in the 4th and go on a run to make it a game and pull it out. Could argue that the same thing happened in tonight’s first game although not by choice. Capella goes out with an injury on an already smallish team and the Hawks turn the game around to win it against a giant Cleveland front line. This has been a trend in the playoffs with even big names like Gobert, Ayton, and Lopez being taken off the court during crucial minutes because they get exposed against the perimeter oriented playmakers in todays game. Its a perimeter league. This is why I’d rather not spend big money or a top 5 pick on a Center in today’s NBA.

It's a mixed bag for me. I like Jabari and Ivey if we're in the 1-4 range and Mathurin or Sharpe in the 5-8 range. Most of the other candidates just feel like low ceiling rotation guys (like the Luke Kennard pick). I think we need to swing hard for another star next to Cade in this draft. You only get so many chances to draft a potential star and Detroit isn't likely to attract Free Agent stars.
-
If by "slow building" you mean to continue to be bad and get high lottery picks in order gain young talent, I think that's off the table and this is going to be the last time we have a high lottery pick for a while. We were a .500 team since Feb 16 if you remove the last 3 tank games where played all G-League guys. I doubt we see this team in the bottom 5 next year and being in the mix for a play-in game isn't out of the question. This is a huge offseason for Weaver. It could very easily be THE defining offseason for what this team becomes and the most important of Weaver's tenure in Detroit. A lot of key decisions such as Grant's contract/trade, high lottery pick, dollars to spend on a weak FA class, Bagley's contract, etc. The dream outcome for me would be to get lucky enough to draft Jabari Smith Jr (PF), trade Grant for Portland's higher pick and grab an athletic guard next to Cade (Ivey, Mathurin, or Sharpe). Now you've got your young core with Cade, [Rookie Guard], Bey, and Jabari. You still have a decent amount of FA money that could be used to address your starting Center and/or add bench talent. That's a team that won't skyrocket to the top because they'll take time to mature, but it's "slowness" is based upon player development of a young core with a very high ceiling, not GM development of a bad team still searching for their core.

Cade's numbers in March were way better than Barnes and it's not even close, yet they gave Barnes rookie of the month. I shouldn't be surprised - the media has their story and their sticking to it. It'll be the same for Rookie of the Year. Cade tweeted out, "Detroit vs Everybody", and he's not wrong. Suddenly wins matter for RoY and being the 3 or 4th option on a team with All-Stars is comparable to being the #1 option getting double on every play on a team with almost nothing. Whatever, we got the best player and the top 25 under 25 shows that as well.
