2012 and 13, you had some combo of Verlander, Scherzer, Porcello, Sanchez, and Fister with Smyly in reserve. 2014, Fister was traded, and Smyly backfilled until Price was acquired. That core was pretty durable. You had as good of a 1-5 as you will find in baseball history. Yes, they didn't make every start so you may remember some back end guys who filled in, but you are talking about your 7th and 8th guys not your 4th and 5th.

In 2023 the Tigers had 16 different pitchers start a game. In 2013 the Tigers had just 6.  Talk about a lucky year when no one got hurt or was ineffective.   Wow!

    Verlander 34, Fister 32, Scherzer 32, Sanchez 29, Porcello 29, & Jose Alvarez 6

I love when fans freak out about spring training statistics of someone is headed to Toledo to start the season.  It's one of the beautiful things about baseball.

I remember years ago while I was attending a spring training game that Skeeter Barnes was playing third base and failed to field a simple ground ball.   Folks in the crowd were yelling "See you in Toledo."

  3. I certainly hope the Tigers are smart enough not to trade much of their strength in the pitching department so that it becomes a weakness. I would think that adding a couple of free agent bats would be a much better way to go.  Who that would be......I have no idea but don't trade your strength into a weakness.

I don't think he'll get over 100 million, but he'll most likely get a lot more than 3/49 from some team.  I'm expecting him to opt out.  The Tigers will probably offer one year deals to pitchers coming off injuries or sub-par seasons.  They'll hope for another Lorenzen.

    They could always re-sign him............

Having been out of commission most of this year, I watched a game a while back and the stands were pretty full and C-Mo was talking about how great the clubhouse was and how the team really believed in itself and having heard this so many times before I thought we were right on the edge of it being like kittens shot by snipers and that’s what it’s become. I still love this team as much as I did when I was nine years old and my heart still beats for them in the same way, but this is really hard to endure.

Many of us are right there with you Bert.

I didn't realize how much time Ibanez has spent at 2B in his professional career.  About twice as many innings at 2B as 3B.  I thought he was primarily a corner IF historically based in his recent seasons.  And maybe that skill set has shifted from the middle to the corners at this stage of his career.

So.......is he one of those guys that is good defensively anywhere but not great anywhere?
