Ok, read the article so now I understand the distinction, however it doesn’t seem to pass the “smell” test, don’t you think?
Why even bother with this step at all?Seems like no legal recourse at all for the immigrants.
True. The article also suggests that there is disagreement over whether or not it is legal-and that it's taking time away from focusing on real security risks.

Many of the people being arrested have final orders of deportation. That means they had their day in court and still people on the left freak out when they get taken away. I don't get it, does the USA not have the right to enforce any immigration laws at all?
Other administrations managed to do so without using the tactics the current one is using-heck, Obama was nicknamed the Deporter in Chief by immigrant advocates. Why can't this one? Seems to me that cruelty and fear is most, if not all, of the point.
And many of them are being targeted AT the court, when they're going for their hearings.

Canon is a hack, but what does that have to do with people being in the country illegally?
They're human beings, and still entitled to due process-mostly here to work, and make a better life. Some of them were 2-3 when they were brought here and don't even remember the countries of their birth.
I work with a lot of people from Central America and they are good, hardworking people. I don't know under what circumstances they first came here (they're citizens now) and I don't care.

That list makes me proud.
Sigh.

I decided to start watching The World at War series today... after seeing footage of Hitler's 50th birthday parade/celebration in episode 1, I believe I know exactly what Drumpf wanted his parade to be.

Not sure how to post a link to a bluesky post, but there's one that basically says 'this is why you don't order from wish.com'

Some questionable music choices.... I saw a clip where they played Fortunate Son by CCR as the parade was going on.
Sounds like somebody has no idea what that song is about.

Sad part is our armed forces deserve better-too bad he who shall not be named had to make it all about him instead.

He knows what he's doing in the sense he can connect to those rural voters that swing the elections for him. He knows the buzzwords and how to pinpoint and phrase an issue. He also knows how to craft a tweet that gets everybody upset so they say 'look how nuts he is....'. He's good at trolling. It gets the libs worked up so you get a circle jerk of responses and sharing. I just roll my eyes at it because they fell for it again. He will mispell a word or do random capitalization. Then the literati respond as if their words will change a mind.
A good example of this is the shower head water pressure. It's harmless. But a lot of people are like "Yeah, that does suck... why can't I have my good showers back? **** the libs, man...."
We laughed at him driving the garbage truck and working at mcdonald's. But it worked for him.
True. What would really upset him most if we would ignore his most idiotic stunts.

Wouldn't it be nice if they thru a party on a dreary Saturday and nobody showed (unless they were paid to)
Not sure about DC, but much of the NE has had 12 Saturdays in a row with rain. How evil am I to wish for a whole day of cold, wind driven rain tomorrow? There's a chance of rain here, but only for the morning....

and the dumbest, most projection filled op-ed of the week goes to…
Sadly I can't find it now, but a day or two ago there was a thread on Bluesky demonstrating how people start a tiny little fire, and use various angles/photoshopping/etc techniques to make it look like a riot in which 'downtown is on fire.' Also others showed how at least one 'journalist' arranged to have police cars around complete with sirens, that went away as soon as they finished filming. It was both impressive and infuriating.
Did anybody else see this? I'm hoping I didn't see it in a dream....

I'm sure there will be one at the Common downtown.... hopefully I'll get out of work in time to catch at least part of it.

There's that, but also, since he lives near immigrants, he knows who they are, perhaps even says hi and chats with them once in a while. I don't know whether he actually does, but that's what most neighborly folks would do.
Almost all the red hats who are mightily exercised about the immigrant population don't live near any immigrants. Immigrants are a scary other to them, so red hats will believe any bad lie that's told about immigrants.
Admittedly I don't know too many rabid anti-immigrant people... but many of the ones I do are from families that only came here a generation or two ago, and whose parents/grandparents were vilified for being of the 'wrong background.'

I love the idea. A bit late in the game to organize. Say somewhere out of Washington, maybe a concert of patriotic music or flooding the internet with re-enacted speeches from Patrick Henry, Jefferson, Adams etc...completely ignoring TACO for the day.
I love ALL of those ideas.

I'm getting fearful about the upcoming weekend's events in DC...
It's going to become another "made for TV" event...
TBH I'm also wondering if would be best to use the day to bring away attention away from Drumpf's totalitarian display by not mentioning him. Perhaps we could have a bunch of events featuring a bunch of flags from as many different places as possible? Make it into something that's not about he who shall be nameless for the day.

You know, I’ll probably be dead in a small number of years (& lately it’s feeling imminent ), but I really feel like I can’t just shrug this one off, mostly because I have in my family kids under 20. And 3 are females, whose very future is now looking dangerous. A percentage of the population will not care if they actually die…. & it seems that it will depend where they choose to live. I guess they shouldn’t travel anywhere.
Look, I’m rambling, but I’m honestly afraid for them.
And, I’m worried for our aging population (I am for sure in this group), because it feels like the rest of you are waiting for us to shut up and just ****ing die already.
Same. Also, even though they're all naturalized citizens, I'm afraid that my boyfriend and many of my coworkers will get snatched and taken away by ICE. And no, I don't see this as being paranoid.

I read about that in Halberstam's book The Fifties. I'll say it again, if you haven't read that, please do. It's a top 5 book for me. I learned so much about so many things.
There's also an interesting book called Operation Paperclip, I believe by Annie Jacobsen (sp?). I recommend that for anybody interested in the Cold War era.

Nah, I think we all knew that his 5/19 response wasn’t how he felt. Today’s is.
My guess is someone else posted the 5/19 post was put up by somebody else, and that he may or may not know it even exists.

What makes it interesting is that if you read novels from around the time when Scandinavians were among the most recent immigrants to MN, they're definitely portrayed as being inferior to the WASPs that were in the area first.
How quickly people forget....

And if you yourself say that it is scummy, then I'm surprised that you still seem to support it.
