You would think we would hear from POTUS about this.

    We should. Absolutely.

The best part? There are people, including ones I know, who would provide a place for them to stay in a heartbeat. A little humanity and communication would go a long way.

  2. This was years ago now, but I'll never forget the flight home after my Mom (rest her soul) passed away. I was in the last row, and figured it would take at least 45 minutes to get off. Imagine my surprise when everybody waited until the plane came to a full stop, the door opened, and then proceeded to exit, 1st to last row, with people very easily grabbing their bags from the compartments as they filed out. It's amazing how fast deplaning is when people just wait their turns.

I have a feeling that I'm not going to see that again.

I doubt this place will make anybody famous!  I don't view this forum as wide reaching socia media. It would be good if grew some more, but if it got too big, I would probably not like it as much.  I like that we all know each other a little bit.

I agree the media should stop giving crazy politicians a lot of attention, but they won't because craziness gets them clicks.

That is very true, most people find our site by going out of their way to search for it (which makes it good, IMO).

Your second point is also true... I remember watching one of the WS games in (I think 2000?) and the announcers went on for a whole inning about how they 'wished everyone would stop talking about that bat throwing incident.' People always say they want to hear calm, rational discussion but it's the mud-slingers who get most of the attention while the voice of reason gets ignored or called 'boring.'

I’m not complaining that it gets dark so early per se… but after working at home then getting dinner going immediately and cleaned up so early on Mondays due to a commitment why wife has…. I often like to take a quick Power Nap to chill. Just lay back and close my eyes for 10 minutes.  But with it being dark out it feels weird.  So I turn the light on in our hallway so it’s half lit in the room.

That's the biggest challenge of winter... although I have to admit the dark makes it easier for me to go to sleep.

  5. This is a tough one for me to say, since in general I support street performers/buskers, BUT only if they have talent, and only if they show consideration for people who might need to work and/or sleep.

Example: there are some very talented bucket drummers out there, who vary their routines and have become part of the tourist scene. That said, there's a lot more to drumming than randomly banging on buckets, pots, and pans. I remember leaving the Garden after a Bob Seger concert (one of my all time favorites), and there was a bucket drummer there. Umm, I want to keep the songs of the concert I just got out of in my head (a 'fine memory'), not some random bucket drummer.

  6. I have mixed feelings on sharing tweets from people like MTG.... On the one hand, I agree with people who say "Stop making stupid people famous," and am sick of the media giving "certain" politicians a lot of press because of the controversy they cause.

On the other hand... people unfortunately do follow these people, and even more unfortunately actually will vote for them, and I'm a firm believer in knowing what 'the enemy' is up to.

  7. Once I take my LATG exam, and once daylight only lasts from about 8 am-4 pm, I'm going to need books to read.

I especially like historical (recent reads include The Warmth of Other Suns and Caste: The Origin of Our Discontent), and mysteries. Bonus points for anybody who can recommend a historical fiction mystery that also features cats!

    Thanks in advance!

The streets and avenues here in The Big City are routinely cracked and broken, and stay that way throughout the spring, summer and into the fall. There may be some patching up here and there, but they go mostly untouched as the year continues to unfold. Riding bicycles on these streets can be a real horrorshow (e.g., Milwaukee Ave between North Ave and Wabansia).

Then, all of a sudden, starting in early October, as if by magic, road repair crews start descending on all parts of The City en masse, engaging in a feverish flurry of activity. You can hardly go more than a mile on any major thoroughfare before you see entire sections of road closed off, or lanes barreled off, for blocks on end. Traffic halts to a standstill even on low-traffic days and times as crews actively shut down access and egress for several minutes at a time to allow this dump truck or that loader to ferry broken asphalt and dirt from this point to that.

This goes on all the way up to December 30, at which point, as if by magic once more, everything related to road repair evaporates completely from the scene, leaving nary a trace save for some still-blocked-off roads that will remain as such well into late spring, at the very least.

You're a savvy person. I don't have to tell you why this is.

The best part of all this, of course, is that we get these brand spanking new roads, smooth as glass, in place just in time for the coldest months of the year, during which they buckle and break as the temperatures careen from sub-zero to thaw levels to sub-zero and then back again, until they can present themselves as freshly-cracked and -broken streets and avenues to my bicycle once I pull that out of hibernation in late April or so.

Oh, that all sounds so familiar! Between construction, repairs, and utility work downtown Boston feels like the combination of a maze and an obstacle course. Good times...

Is it me, or does he exhibit the signs of being strung out beyond all belief on meth?

That, or another drug. There's a methadone clinic down the street from me and he definitely bears a strong resemblance to the patients I see. Only difference is the patients I've met are far nicer than he seems.

  10. So, earlier today I signed all of the papers to close on a condo.

I've been keeping it mostly quiet because finding a home in my price range in this city (especially downtown) is akin to finding a unicorn anyplace but in a fantasy novel, and the process dragged on and on.

It's the first home I've ever owned, and for the first time in my adult life I'll have a proper bedroom.

    Better late than never! 🙂

    Anyone have Paramount's TV app?

It's the worst one I've ever used.     Good luck trying to rewind or fast forward..........you will never find your spot again and you'll have to sit through at least 2 rounds of commericals,  the exact same commercials every time.

And you know, this happens with Hulu too.............commercial cues are f'ed up.  Where it should play it does not, but 2-3 seconds into the next scene the commercial starts.   We flew a missile into a moving asteroid and knocked it off course and we can't conquer this?

I haven't tried that one, but it feels like channels are taking turns pixelating on my tv... seems to be a problem Xfinity has been having in general lately. I'm moving soon, and the new place only has Fios available... maybe that's not such a bad thing after all. It'll be fun to compare the problems of each provider, at least.

Why would a more moderate Republican stick their neck out and do something like that? They saw what happened to Liz Cheney and Peter Meijer. It is almost certain to be an automatic loss in the primary election to a MAGA, Trump-backed candidate. While Trump's power in a general election has evaporated, this election cycle still proved he has primary power.

It would have to be one that has sufficient charisma to overcome it, or as MTU suggested, one that lives in a district that is purple, rather than red.

I rarely donate to campaigns, but I'm dropping $50 on Raphael.   (Even though I am a heathen atheist and he's a Reverend)

Does the money actually go into his campaign? I've heard before that some donations go into a general fund... I've thought about it, even though I am reluctant to donate to a candidate in a state I don't live in.

  14. For New England, I'd say either CT or RI would be better choices for the first one... they're more diverse than NH and not as Blue as MA.

(although MA, even with its Dem supermajority, still failed to challenge our outgoing governor on many issues, most notably our increasingly embarrassing transit failures, so there's that)
