  1. Good post you put a lot of thought into it. I especially like the part about a manager hitting a moving target from 30 feet away with a rubber band. Just to let you know I did read the entire thing.
  2. Brieske pitched a clean frame with a K against the Pirates, which is good news.
  3. On the optimistic side - aside from Mize - all the relievers who have come in have done pretty well, although I can’t speak for the quality of the hitting they are facing. I’m not paying too much attention to this game.
  4. And then, of course Mize comes back out after a good talking to or whatever the heck it is… It’s hard to get used to this rule, but it makes sense in spring training.
  5. Mize pulled after 43 pitches and 1.2 innings. Couldn’t find the strike zone and walked four.
  6. For the game Mize is pitching in on Friday 13th against the Pirates, here is the starting tigers lineup. The game begins at 6:05 PM EDT. There is a Tigers radio broadcast but no TV broadcast from either team. Meadows, P CF McGonigle SS Torkelson 1B Carpenter RF Greene, R LF Pérez, W DH Keith 3B Jung, Ja 2B Rogers C
  7. I’m grateful this game did not end in a 4–4 tie. Some good relief pitching, and JV showed that he can get strikeouts, even though he’s being hit hard. It’s a process.
  8. Hurter, Jansen, Finnegan, and Smith have all combined in relief for 4 2/3 hitless frames with no walks and six strikeouts. This is really good news.
  9. Now it’s 3 HRs. Needs to work on missing the bats more. Although he has K’d three… I honestly didn’t expect him to be up and going at full strength when some of these players have already put in 15–18 games already. But it is what it is…
  10. So, JV gave up 2HR in the first inning to the Yankees, but he struck out 2 and kept his pitch count to only 16. Early season jitters…
  11. THIS! Playing the Indians and the Royals 18 times in a season was boring as heck.
  12. Yeah, there was a mystique about the meeting of teams from the two different leagues back then. It happened in spring, which really didn’t count, and in the All-Star game and the World Series. But although I get wistful about some baseball related stuff, this is something I don’t miss. I like seeing teams from the National League at least once a year. It’s like getting more than socks for your birthday and getting a real present instead. It would’ve been great seeing Ernie Banks at old Tiger Stadium, and Willie Mays, and Sandy Koufax.
  13. UPCOMING GAMES – Thursday, March 12 Verlander against the Yankees in Lakeland - WXYT 1270 Friday, March 13 Casey Mize against the Pirates in Lakeland - WXYT 1270 Saturday, March 14 Skubal against Toronto and Max Scherzer in Dunedin - Detroit SportsNet TV - MLBN (out of market only) - WXYT 97.1 FM
  14. Two Tiger’s pitchers allow runs, so it’s a loss but at least it wasn’t a tie.
  15. This March 11 game of the Tigers at the Twins either the Twins are really crappy hitters or all the Tigers pitchers on this “bullpen day” are really good. No runs scored against Detroit pitching but not many Ks either. The Tigers hitters have already struck out 13 times in eight innings.
  16. The Red Sox announcers were pretty disinterested in the game, and I don’t really blame them, but still it didn’t feel like they were doing their job which should’ve been more than just chitchating about other stuff.
  17. So the Tigers actually win a game 7–2 - against the Red Sox - instead of losing or tying, which is OK but in the big picture pretty meaningless.
  18. We’ve reached that point in this spring training game where on Gameday neither the pitchers nor the hitters have profile photos.
  19. Corey Julks homers (3) on a fly ball to left field. Austin Slater scores. 7-2 Tigers in the 9th vs. the Red Sox.
  20. Greene hit a two run homer with Perez on!
  21. We have another 13 of these spring training games to go… and there’s a couple off days sandwiched in. And there’s three weeks between now and when we play the Padres in San Diego. The winter of our discontent continues until then.
  22. Madden is the starting pitcher in today’s March 10 game at Fort Myers with the Red Sox. The only media coverage is Red Sox radio. Meadows, P CF McGonigle SS Vierling LF Pérez, W RF Greene, R DH Cruz 3B Jung, Ja 1B Rogers C Anderson, M 2B
  23. Skubal is expected to rejoin the Tigers and may pitch in a spring training game as early as Thursday
  24. He pitched three scoreless innings.
  25. Keider Montero just pitched perfect inning against Nicaragua in the WBC game between Venezuela and Nicaragua.
