  1. Yeah, the weird people who didn't like H.W. Bush in the run up to that NH primary in 1992 freaked me out. There were a lot of them and they were soooo passionate. A lot of the talk focused on things like the Khazar Jews of central Asia who were apparently satanists and also that H.W. Bush didn't want to declare war on Vietnam to get our POW/MIA out. That latter item was brought home to me the other day by DIRECTV showing of the very excellent low-budget "Uncommon Valor" (Gene Hackman, Fred Ward, Randal "Tex" Cobb, Patrick Swayze, et.al., ) in which the plot revolves around there being a number of POWs left in SE Asia that had to be found and recovered. I loved the movie but the politics of that film were troglodyte in the extreme.
  2. So report from my son. He's bored with campus closed down. He went to Frankenmouth for lunch today because all his buddies who live in state headed home and the remaining gang didn't want to do anything too overtly fun in the wake of this. He happens to be studying German so he had chicken schnitzel and marveled at the lack of German anywhere in frankenmuth. RE: Monday night Per him, once the cops moved off to the East from the first two shooting sites, he was like "whats the big deal?" Told this to some colleagues who 1. asked why he isn't courting some girl who is despondent? and 2. asked is he ready to join the military if he is that blase about mortal violence within a block of his location? I know better about #2. He was stressed for sure.
  3. I had super slow trip to North Carolina from DC by rail that took an extra 8 hours because the ground under the tracks were wet. That's not acceptable. But, because Amtrak is a toy and not meant to be reliable human transportation its allowed. The NE corridor is reliable. I'm told its reliable in some other places as well.
  4. Amtrak south of DC was slow. DC to NY was absolutely fine. I'm told absolutely fine all the way to Boston. I would love a rail connection from DC to Detroit but expect to share that rail with freight.
  5. the WMATA has a definite development supercharging effect here in NOVA: houses replaced by highrises and corner stores replaced by Google and Rolls Royce regional HQs. I realize Michigan folk are anathema to the idea of mass transit. I don't think that changes anytime soon. I have that same attitude when i ride the metro here. Its basically impossible to move at speed through the system.
  6. I used to enjoy parking off the Silverdome and riding a bus into the place on a special route. That made the experience a lot easier. Gimme a metro station at the corner of 6 and middlebelt that could take me to a baseball game and back and i'll bet real estate prices at 6 and middlebelt would skyrocket.
  7. if they are a crime family, they are an exceptionally boring crime family. Not that i want eccentric crime families running my sports teams
  8. Buddy's win formula is to have a salad with the pie. The roughage helps digest the more carby pizza mo better. All bets are off with NY style though. My upbringing as the younger kid in a family with many siblings taught me to eat quickly and aggressively. Its my kryptonite.
  9. The wife, an MSU alumn is really upset that the RW response to all this is to lock down the campus and make everyone badge into the classes because that is the only thing anyone can actually agree to do. and that is cowardice.
  10. I have a co-worker who was trying to argue with me about bump stocks the other day and I just shut that conversation down as it was clearly a religious matter for him. God wants there to be mass killings apparently.
  11. I know you all know that I am a shooter and I have a membership at a shooting range. I took my son shooting during Christmas break a couple times and we had a great time. I was actually supposed to go for my monthly range time today. My god...I just can't swallow the BS that attributes to this shooting culture anymore. There do need to be tougher laws and restrictions. I did the analysis of the patterns of the shooting (e.g., "reports of 4 shots at [location]") and deduced that it had to be a handgun so was relieved this villain did not have a long gun.
  12. Glad this is over. Could have been so much worse. It’s still not something i can wrap my mind around. It’s just so horrible. I had been through a few major stressful events in my life like this where adrenaline was at max and the headache afterwards was shattering. So far i’m ok, but my Son who was sheltering in place says he has a bad headache so that tracks.
  13. I saw Denard Robinson tweeted (earnestly) Thougjts and prayers and i was revolted. that just calls for mockery
  14. So much fuckery going on.
  15. Worse are bad faith noise added to the equation.
  16. I’m 500 miles away and texting with my son…my heart
  17. This is just west of my son’s dorm
  18. I've been having these conversations at work that go "What is Detroit style?" and I'm like "well, i had never had that until i was an adult and its really good but its not actually what I grew up with." Basically, foodies are gonna foodie. The idea that there is a thing that is Detroit style and people outside the area like it is almost enough for me to be proud of. I grew up on NY style slices from places like Primos and Lorenzos (no longer around) that would burn your mouth from the spicy sauce and toppings. These pizzas would be thrown by my parents to my siblings and I like a gazelle carcass thrown to a pack of lion cubs or a cow stumbling into the Amazon and being shredded by piranhas and it would disappear in seconds. According to my NJ-born colleague at work who had experience making pies, an acceptable NY pizza slice must be able to fold at the sides at the crust and the tip (i.e., the part from center of the pie) must not bend down. That standard is not met by a lot of places who don't actually give a bleep.
  19. Honestly who could tell the difference when they are happy to include people like Santos and Luna in their midst.
  20. No kidding! The people who are trying to create boogymen out of anything love a cultural touchstone moment like the SB.
  21. That is amazing.
