I'm surprised they didn't give him more consideration when Grossman went down with his injury.... then again, they really needed Willi because reasons.

I agree. I have no idea how TThompson will do from here on. I do know he was having a good year at AAA with power results. I get he is not 21 yrs old - but not every player has to be a 'young prospect' to make sense for a roster.

IMHO, sometimes you have to try a player(s) who has been producing. Thompson has MLB experience and some tools. Every team has players like this (rebuilding or contending). I find it quite interesting that the Dodgers sought him ought... I do know he did play with L.A. before as well.

You have to think the Tigs know they need another 1-2 'offensive' players as they evaluate. I wonder also if they see Greene as a CF fixture or do they move him to a corner? Then seek a CF and another bat. This is all part of the evaluation process as we will see how it all plays out.

  2.    To win games and be entertaining. Find out more about who may be part of the team going forward. Find out more about a few MiLB players that may be close (not all have to be 20 yrs old, some could be AAAA types even).

To further understand and accept that depth is more important than ever before in the modern game and that injuries are always a larger part now for every team (hopefully not at the current rate here in Detroit).

(note: On that note, and I may just start a thread on this at a later date: Perhaps gone are the days, from here on end, of the following: SP winning 225 games during a career. Hitters with 500 HRs and 3000 hits. Teams with lineups featuring 7 starting players that start 150 games a year and 3 SPs throwing 200 innings during the same year, and more.)

To maybe acquire a 'potential' MLB ready starting player type from some of the RP depth at the trade deadline. Teams are always looking, and pay big, for RP at that time.

Who knows, I still feel if this teams gets healthier, and plays to their capabilities - there still may be more exciting baseball in Motown 'this' season!

    Good day all 🙂

What a great game to be at. The outing by the kid, the two bombs, the catwalk homer (!), walking the tightrope and still getting the win. What a thrilling game. Fast, too! They should all be like that. 😏

Yes, reminds one of many of the games from years past! 👍

I'd be surprised if Pineda wasn't the fifth starter whenever he's ready.

Between Alexander and how the youngsters have looked, the Tigers appear to be in much better shape going into 2022 than they were last year starter depth-wise. You need 2-3 extra guys beyond #5 in this day and age, and they have them in a way they didn't last year.

Depth is very big in all of this. There will need the 2-3 guys (SP) and maybe plus as the season goes on (as will most other clubs). Yet, by having some depth out of the start to start, they are ahead (at least for now). I still will not be surprised to see them add another SP/long relief type on a minors contract.

I don’t know who’s left besides Cueto. Do you think we’re going after him?

Hmm, I was actually thinking more like Julio Teheran perhaps. It would have to be a minors deal, with incentives. JUrena, Cueto, Chris Archer are still out there. I am surprised there has been little noise about Zach Davies who can give decent innings.

On the other hand if the Tigs have to give up Manning for Montas... Also if they are competing later they could go after reinforcements.

I have to admit I like what the SF Giants are doing with several depth options: CMartinez, MBoyd, JJunis, etc.

Their take for Chapman seems pretty underwhelming to me.  They can have Paredes, but they might want Kriedler, who's their type of guy who is close to MLB. Throw in Elvin Rodriguez and Clemens, and that should be enough for Montas.  Reese Olson is another I think they'd like.

I like it! There may be interest in Daz and/or WCastro as well with a pitcher.

I agree.  So that only increases the price on a guy like Pineda.

Hmm, Pineda, if healthy (can be said for most of course) should help. Was thinking Zach, as he could also help mentor... I think other available starters still in FA are: Zach Davies, Chris Archer, Drew Smiley, Johnny Cueto, Garrett Richards, Chris Duffy (out like MBoyd til mid-season) JA Happ, Julio Teheran,  and Jose Urena. All with question marks and much is health. Zach Davies (unless I am unaware that he signed) is interesting because he can give innings.

No question, the Tigs need more depth at SP (IMHO) and someone here or even a trade may be coming here before long...

It's also to help with the "slick bases" issue and hopefully prevent some injuries.

That, in addition to the previous reasons, and I heard on MLB Network it may help allow just a bit more for the 1B to stretch and the runners lane allowing for more distance from the 1B- hence a bit lesser collision chance.

I live across the street from a couple little league baseball diamonds and it of course gets used during the summer for the Little League teams but other than that it is never used. It's not locked up or anything yet you don't see any kids playing any sandlot baseball at all. Like when I was a kid almost everyday kids in our neighborhood were up at the baseball diamond playing games, whether it was 3 on 3 with ghostrunners and oppo field out or sometimes even like 6 on 6.  There were always kids playing yet I never see that at the field across the street. It makes me sad actually.

Yes, in many, many areas that was the norm. Actually most all had fun and exercise to boot. It is just a different time. Of course there are leagues but I think kids could have fun with pick-up games again, but there are so many choices now and physical activity is sometimes frowned upon - which is sad, all in IMHO of course.

I think the Tigers' suckiness goes beyond Zimmermann.  I think his situation and the contract being a strikeout was a contributing factor.

I kind of wonder what the Tigers would have done had Verlander not been traded with 16 seconds left on the clock.  If he had remained with the team for the rest of 2017, do the Tigers try to retool for a playoff run in 2018?

IMHO, it seemed at that 'time' the JV trade was needed on all Fronts (JV, Tigs, Houston,... ). However, that does not rule out a return perhaps some day as well...

To boot this card was of the last series of Topps 1970 (7th) when there were less prints. I remember kids would collect cards all year, ex series 1-5 or 6 as they came out respectively, then the last series  came out always much later, ex August/Sept and NOT dispersed nearly as much and so many kids/collectors would get upset. Then you had to find these lesser printed cards to complete a set somehow (maybe go to a card show) only to pay $1 even for a common player because of the scarcity!

Perhaps, but this might be his best and only window to show what he can do at the ML level.  Once Tork comes up, I think the starting infield will be Tork, Schoop, Baez and Candy.  Not a lot of AB’s will be available in the infield.

This is true on paper - but this day and age injuries are more prevalent and IL/DL stints are used to team & player advantage (15 days to 10 days) more than ever. The days of teams with 7-8 position players playing in 150+ games are history as are 3-4 SPs on a team that throw 200+ innings (heck 180 for that matter). It just is, and for various reasons - hence quality depth seems 'Very' important.

I know Baez is alot of people's 5th choice and who knows how serious these supposed contract talks were but it's nice to still hear rumors of us discussing things with one of the top 5 guys.

Yes it is. He would help quite a bit. Hopefully the cost is not too prohibitive (years/dollars) and allows another upgrade elsewhere. Just seems a bit like CCorrea has a price set based on what Lindor received. Maybe Texas is offering him a big time splash to be the franchise face for their rebuild going forward. It seems the Tig brass is working on the SS position upgrade with some determination. IMHO, any one of the top 5 SS will help this club.

I would be very, very happy with Baez.  Power, speed, and superb defender.  OK, he doesn't get on base as much as you'd like.  But I would be very pleased.

Second that. Really any of the 5-6 top SS will help the team quite a bit. Saying "...multiple needs" is interesting. Would the team be better off with just Correa or say Baez and another 15mil+/- player(s) as well who could help make a difference for a few yrs?

  15. 10 hours ago, RandyMarsh said:

You, me and a couple others seem to be the only ones that would be fine with him.  I remember suggesting him towards the tail end of the old board and you'd think I suggested Neifi Perez or something by some of the responses it got.

Not only on here but I saw on one of the Tigers pundits accounts(Beck maybe?) bringing up Baez as a possibility and it was overwhelming negative with people against it.

Agreed. I would think Javy would be a fine addition - all things considered (price, age, power, D, running ability, so far durability, etc.). He is a talented player and just might 'become' more open to some changes in his approach as his career moves along. Of course any of the 5-6 top SS will help quite a bit. Just saying all things considered, Javy, IMHO, might workout well also.

Other teams can get quality players with higher picks and later rounds.  We can only hope Al can figure it out with the 12th pick.

I would think by now Al is relying heavily on his new scouting and analytics departments?

FWIW, I think you have nailed it.  I wouldn't mind seeing a little "tune up" in mid relief as well ...a couple of our go-to guys that  we now use.... drive me insane

Yep, seems pretty spot on - and we have all heard about the org looking to improve. IMHO, RP's seem so volatile, one year to the next, it might not be wise to spend too much on any - yet, during the season IF things are going well, can always look into.

The other thing that is Very important is depth. As mentioned before, gone may be the days of 7-8 position players playing 150 games. Same with SPs, 3-4 going 200 IP. Every team needs to be 2 players deep per say at each position. Some able to play several positions. The IL list the last few seasons shows this and to expect that to change - well... The mix and match of quality UT/starter types. Even if we get a SS, we will need a player or two that can play 30-40 games there (ex Kreidler, Niko, Harold, etc. combo). Same player(s) may be at multi positions. It is now a 40 man go to roster. Teams know this. There could be CBA influence as well ex 27 man rosters? etc.

Perhaps the Tigs may be in the market for previously mentioned names here like a C TBarnhart, etc. Also, one year re-establish value types MConforto - but they may wait to see who is available after priority shopping (SS & SP) for that particular type. They may actually be able to package a couple younger players (not the core types) and get a need. It should be an interesting off season!

I never would have believed, at the start of the season, the Tigers would be flirting with .500 in the last week of the schedule.

It's been a really entertaining year.

Agreed. Should be an interesting off season with the team and CBA coming up. One thing that hopefully teams and fans alike hopefully can see - IMHO, the days of 7-8 starting position players playing in 150+ games may be gone. Same for 3-4 SPs on a team pitching 200 innings. Sure there will be an outlier or two here and there - but depth at 'every' position is more important than ever. The rosters should increase by another 1-2 players it would seem...

Say counting from the last 5 years on it may be more rare to see anybody win 250 games again. To hit 400-500 HRs (again an outlier here and there)... IMHO, the game has changed in this regard as well.
