Liston decided to go through with the Rule V even though the Rule 5 got cancelled.  The popcorn was already a year old and he didn't want to wait another year.  So, we had a smaller gathering and without the excitement of the draft to keep us distracted, things got a little out of hand.  Liston got Manfred's cell phone number and told Casimir to make a prank call pretending to be Tony Clark.  It was all in good fun, but Casimir went a little too far.  MLB threatened to sue Liston, but I think he got that straightened out. Nobody is mad at Casimir though.  It was his first Rule V party and he wanted to make an impression.  You can't really blame him.

The bacon-wrapped dates and charcuterie board were standouts.

The genius Ryan Ermani on Fox2 just now is explaining to the other two people that this all boils down to minimum salary.  that's the big holdup in his point of view.  This is their 9 am chit chat show where they just bullshit their way through the hour.  So now a bunch of non sports fans are watching this and thinking there's no baseball because of $50,000 in minimum salary.  He didn't bring up any of the other issues.

that's your fault for watching those idiotic local "news" shows.  I just hope the damage done to your IQ is not irreparable.

I wonder what the over/under is on the season starting by May 1? I personally think that an avalanche of animosity will be released at 12:01 AM March 1 when there is no deal. Give them a two week cool down and additional 2 weeks of negotiations and 4 weeks of spring training that makes May 1 probably the early date. I still think no MLB baseball until July 1.

Seems insane to me that this can’t get worked out, based on the potential damage to a game whose interest is waning amongst a younger demographic.  Seems a bit shortsighted, but the owners can weather any financial storm and will likely dig in.

Heck, if they don't start until mid-May we'll all be watching the USFL and baseball will be far from our minds... right?

Really hope Bobby Hebert will be the QB again.

As for other options, would/could the Tigers schedule a few Mud Hens games at Comerica?  Also wonder if Bally Sports would televise any of the Hens games?  With the excitement around Greene and Tork, I suspect they could get some viewers.

Bummer, I mentioned this before but I remember back to those intra squad games in 2020, Hess was a guy that really impressed me, his stuff looked really electric and I even remember going as far as saying that I thought he was going to be a key piece in the backend of the bullpen that year in the bold predictions thread. Now here we are 2 years later and he's gonna be out atleast a year and a half.

Seems like an odd time to discover that, unless he played winter ball.  He could be ready by next spring with some luck.  I think he’s repped by Bauer’s agent, Rachel Luba, who hasn’t been very lucky with clients (also reps Puig).

That one is very impressive! I'm very jealous of your collection.

Thanks—I’m missing a Torkelson.  They are a bit overpriced still, so waiting to see if they come down a bit.

I heard Frank Beckman doing Tigers games a few times in the mid-90's and really liked him.  He was paired with Lary Sorensen whom I didn't really care for.

I like Sorensen a lot—thought he was very insightful.  Was sorry he had his challenges with alcohol that derailed his broadcasting career.

I wonder how many casual fans even know there is a strike going on right now? I was at my parents yesterday for the Super Bowl and my Step Dad and his friend said something like "shouldnt Spring Training be starting up here soon?" and when I told them about the strike they had no idea.

My Step Dad is usually who I use as the barometer for casual fan, he's somebody that watches about half of the games but doesn't listen to sports talk radio and certainly doesn't go on the internet to talk about sports. Any sports information he gets is from the local news and my siblings and me.

Probably true.  I suspect it will become more evident if this drags long enough that the start of the season is impacted.

  9. I think the biggest risk is for fans who don’t miss it—once baseball becomes irrelevant, that’s when it is in danger.  Not a risk for a collection of nerds who spend time in an online forum like us, but could be for younger fans who might be indifferent to begin with.  Certainly happened to the NHL, though not an apples to apples comparison since hockey is more regional in nature and has never had the other major sport’s popularity.

I don't know what more they could have done to lose games.  They put a team on the field that wasn't even a good AAA team.  I understand the aspects of a rebuild but the Tigers didn't have to completely destroy the team to rebuild.  They could have kept a few "building blocks" and added to it.  They got very little for the trades they made of the veterans.  An expansion team could have started better than the rebuilding Tigers did.  Its not a good look for a team and horrible for the loyal fans.

Agree.  They didn’t have to go the nuclear route.
