Tork is in danger of being traded this offseason.

    IMO.

That doesn’t make sense.  Finally contributing and affordable and provides much needed 30 HR power from the RH side?  And no replacement in sight?

    I think he’s OK

I don't think anyone would trade the Tigers enough for them to consider including Briceno. I'm not sure why Tiger fans consider him expendable. He isn't a two-way player, like McGonigle or Clark, but he may have the best power bat in the system. Guys with strong potential to hit 35-40 HRs a year don't come along very often. If we must, trade Liranzo before Briceno.

Not saying to give him away, but of all of our elite prospects, he’s the most expendable.  Tork has improved both his offensive and defensive skills, so he’s entrenched at 1B likely fir the next few years, at least.

I’d prefer to keep Liranzo—he’ll stay at catcher.

  3. And for our trade capital, I think Max Anderson and Josue Briceno are the most attractive prospects we could move without feeling the loss.

Add in Hamm or another pitcher (I’d like to hold on to Melton cause I suspect we’ll need him this season) and you could command a good player

  4. I wonder how many teams will ultimately decide to sell?  The Tigers showed last season that anything is possible, even with the most remote odds.  I really don’t see the AL Central pulling the plug, save for the White Sox.

Would be ironic if the Tigers, buyers for the first time in 10 years, are disadvantaged by their performance in ‘24. The fewer the sellers, the more the buyers (potentially), which will drive up prices for the fewer players available.

They shouldn’t have to give up much for a lefty-killer on the bench.

I gotta believe as a World Series champ from just last season, and especially since his underlying numbers are better than his results, Flaherty has a very wide berth before he gets knocked out of the #2 spot for October.

I wasn’t thinking of a Ibanez-type, but a legit 4th OF/DH type that could play full-time, if necessary.  Marcell Ozuna?

Teams basically need three good starters to get through the playoffs, right? Given all the off days then, I think most teams going deep spread the vast majority of their starts among their top three. Our top two are Skubal and Flaherty. Yeah, Flaherty is not particularly good lately, or even this whole year, but unless he has an abject collapse, he’s pitching Game 2 of the ALDS.

So, after Skubal and Flaherty, it comes down to Olson and Mize to fill the #3 and spot starter roles, depending on how each do in September. Only if one of them gets hurt or falls off a cliff after August 1 will we be in serious trouble in the rotation. So, unless either Olson or Mize come up lame at the end of this month, we’re not trading for starting pitching, either.

Mize has outpitched Flaherty, who I believe is our 4th SP (if Olsen is healthy).

And I do see the Tigers upgrading from Jones, if not cost-prohibitive.  Getting a proven RH outfielder would be a nice hedge for injuries and complement to our LH hitters.

Bullpen is going to be the focus, though.

In 1971 they had two starters...Freehan and Cash...neither of whom were elected to start.  C Ray Fosse won the voting but couldn't play due to injury..as did 1b Boog Powell.  Kaline and Lolich also made the team as reserves

I thought that was the game where Pete Rose collided into Fosse, causing a neck injury?

AL Cy Young should be interesting.  Brown, Fried, deGrom, Skubal, Bubic, and Crochet all with eras under 2.26.  Four of those guys with whips under .95.

I’d like to see Tarik get to 20 wins.  Was always the benchmark for an ace when I was growing up in the 70’s. Now it’s rarified air.

With the Tigers playing only .500 ball for the last 10 games while their closest competitors in the Central have slumped, they now have an 11.5 game lead over Cleveland, a 12.5 game lead over Minnesota, and a 14 game lead over Kansas City.

Only the White Sox, who have likewise played .500 ball, have stayed stable at 24.5 games behind.

I never would have thought we’d have this type of lead in our division.
