Aside from 3-4 games out of 21, every outcome has gone to the late innings where either team could win. If they could ever get separation on offense, we would be in business.
The optimistic take is that the Tigers have been in just about every game without much if any offensive contribution from a guy who hit 31 HRs last year.

Tony Clark also hit 30 homers three times, but none of them came when it counted.
He may be one of the least appreciated (by fans) power-hitting Tiger of all time.

I want one SP for sure, maybe 2. Maybe Mize makes it back. Maybe he doesn't.
We need a longer lineup and a quality bat is indicated.
Chris I , you have Miggy, (32m),Schoop (7m), Boyd (10m), Meadows (4m), probably Erod (15m), and that's 69 million off of payroll. Spend some money wisely.
On who? Few position players available. Hopefully they will add a premier pitcher if Erod opts out and another Lorenzo type.

Appreciate it! It is honestly something I really enjoy doing and am definitely going to miss the every morning check of how the boys did. I mean we could close it and then create a 2024 version once ST hits as I am guessing most info around other things would be posted in the off-season thread.
No offense but I'm looking forward to when the Farm System reports are no longer the highlight of the day.

Congrats to your 2nd place Detroit Tigers.
Two games over .500 since the break. Two games under since starting the year 2-9. How the heck they managed to be respectable despite the 29th worst offense in MLB is remarkable.

Lynn already has Torkelson traded before any of the guys he has lined up to replace him have hit their first MLB HR, let alone 30 in a season. I think it's nice that he has the ambition to cover the Tiger minor leagues - and I doubt the News is paying him much to do it, but his writing has become caricature, both content and style wise.
He's also been trying to trade Skubal for a couple of years now.

this is a truly terrible offense. We tend not to notice as much as we should because our pitching keeps us in a lot of games that we have no business being in at all so how bad the runs scoring is by league standards isn't so striking.
Well the Tigers did move up from 30th to 29th in runs scored. Progress?

I think Kieth is more likely to for the simple reason that he is a top 100 prospect and has the long shot possibility of netting a draft pick if he would be ROY. I think they’re likely to bring him north unless he shows he isn’t ready in the spring. If he shows he is overwhelmed they can always send him down, but they have no chance of the pick unless they bring him north at the beginning or he keeps rookie eligibility through 2024. If they think he’ll be ready by say June, I think he’s up opening day just because of that caveat.
The Tigers were conservative with Malloy and Keith this year, at least compared to the rest of the league. Of the top 50 hitters (based on OPS) in the IL, 19 were 24 years or younger. Of those 19 only 3 remained in the minors all year: Johathon Rodriguez (23 years old) from Cleveland and Malloy and Keith. There really is no reason that both should not be on the MLB roster at the beginning of 2024.

There is still a chance to win the division.
Who thought the Tigers would still be mathematically in it into September 22?

Right, Skubal is nothing like a workhorse ace, which are generationally rare unicorns. But he's what Harris/Greenberg have inherited so he's what we have to try to count on for now, at least until whatever players this front office brings aboard through draft or trade or free agency move into a position to become the dominant, franchise-leading forces that ring-winning teams need. I think we are probably years and years away from that happening.
I think Jobe has a strong chance to be that guy.

Jung ties it in the 9th with solo HR; hits 2 run HR in 10th; Bigbie hits HR as well.
4 HRs in 2 days for JJ
Jung is starting to really intrigue. Read somewhere that his defense is acceptable at 2B. Could be the answer there.

I think we’re gonna see Maton on the 26 at some point next year. He is not toast yet.
He’s 26. If he hasn’t figured it out by now unlikely he ever will.

Yes that’s true. I just would like an even mediocre offense but these guys aren’t that. They are a tough team to watch at times with their terrible approaches and abs Hopefully next year we can put more that 2 or 3 acceptable hitters in our lineup.
I don’t know that their approaches stink, with the exception of Baez. They just lack talent.

Sheesh, I really wish we’d stop making mediocre pitchers look like cy young candidates.
What do you expect? Six of the guys in today’s lineup have an OPS+ below 90. Another is a rookie heading in that direction. Any semi-competent MLB pitcher can handle a lineup like this.

I think another issue was that no one would call their teammates out for actions like Gibson and Morris because they would be ostracized. It was probably the same reason why UM, Penn St, OSU, MSU coaching staff who knew what was going on with their doctors/training staff pretended it wasn't happening--it was the good ole boys network. Entitled people know they can get away with stuff and they will not face any consequences. Basically, absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Point of clarification on MSU. This one had nothing to do with the good old boy network. Nasser targeted athletes coached by a woman. He got away with it because no one at the university really cared about the gymnastics team and, more importantly, he was able to abuse with near impunity under the guise of a procedure many in his field deemed medically effective. He even duped the FBI. -

By the way, I just now looked it up, and for the last 28 days, Jeimer is slashing .183/.253/.390 for an OPS+ of 71. So … maybe not 2/20 plus option after all … 😁
They can't all be Miggy I guess. In his prime with the Tigers, 2008-2016, Cabrera had one month below a 100 OPS+ (93 in 2015) and an additional three months below 110 OPS+. He had only four months in a 9-year period where he had an OPS below 800. Remarkable consistency.

Thank you! My highest percentage was chet lemon at 6 or 8%, I probably could have done better with someone like Steve Kemp, Ron LeFlore or Dave Stegman. But of course I thought of all those after Lemon.
The things you learn playing this game, like Phil Cavarretta, who played a million seasons with the Cubs, never had a 100 RBI season.

This is probably reason number 1 of many.
All things being equal the benefits of bringing Malloy and Keith up for the final 3-4 weeks of the season far outweigh any further developing that they might do in that time period in AAA. But the 40-man roster issue overrides everything.

Tigers allow 4.6 runs a game over 3 games. That is the league average for runs scored. Hopefully soon, like next year, when the pitching holds the opposition to league average in runs over 3 games the Tigers will win 2 of those 3 most of the time.

He was worse last April. Then posted a 115 OPS+ the rest of the season. Think he will start contributing with the bat.
