I think the expectation is still that a Russian military victory is inevitable (presuming that said military doesn't revolt). The hope is that Ukraine can make their victory as painful as possible, with the idea that Russian citizens won't tolerate sustained heavy casualties that will be hard to keep concealed. This would force Putin to have to abandon the occupation to save himself domestically. This also presumes that Putin's hold on power in Russia isn't so tight that he can get away with atrocities against his own people if that's what it would take for him to achieve his goals.

The U.S. was far more isolationist then, especially at the beginning of WWI and further extending right up until WWII. As such, the U.S. basically had no formal "allies" really until WWII and the aftermath. So there was no opportunity for the U.S. to fail to uphold their obligations there. It could be argued that the very existence of alliances like NATO have been enough to deter attacks on alliance members, thus serving their purpose.

When was the last time a friend or ally was invaded on a scale that said friend or ally required US assistance?

That's what I was thinking when I watched it. The person doing the filming could just as easily have been holding a rifle instead of a camera.

I do wonder if Putin has made the mistake of surrounding himself with yes-men and then forgetting that he may not be getting the truth from them. As in, Putin went in believing he had a righteous cause, because everyone around him is telling him that he does, because they believed he wanted to be told he did. Now he's gone past the point of no return, and may be finding out just how badly mistaken he is. Everyone who was afraid to speak in opposition now has no reason to hold back.

Might as well bring back the classics at that point. Which, I was a little astonished to find, has its own Wikipedia entry.

Screw that, let 'em wallow in the consequences of their choices. Save treatment for those that are actually interested in helping themselves.
