Don't we all agree though that the HB dives and draw plays on second down for a handful of yards, 2-3 per carry, gets predictable and annoying at times? It seems we have this wide open, unpredictable, creative offense 75% of the time. Then 2nd down rolls around and sometimes, but not always, we end up with a humdrum, predictable handoff to a RB for little to no gain. If we can call and predict the next play on 2nd down from our couches, you know opposing DC's and teams are reading it on the field.

Sometimes it feels like we are running the ball out of obligation on 2nd down. Feeling like we are surrendering 2nd down at times. Yes, clearly, there are multiple instances this season and last that you can point to under Ben Johnson were we had big gains on 2nd down. Yes, clearly, Ben Johnson is lightyears ahead of any OC we've had in recent memory from Linehan to Lombardi to JBC to Bevell. I'd like to see the Lions and Ben Johnson's stats on 2nd down compared to other teams. How efficient are we on 2nd downs converting firsts. Yards per play we get on 2nd down. Run vs. pass play call on 2nd down, etc. Maybe it isn't as bad as some of us think and we're making a mountain out of a molehill.

I think it is perfectly fair to recognize and appreciate that Ben Johnson has turned Jared Goff and this offense around and made us a dynamic offensive team as a whole. Doing that, while recognizing that there are play calls and instances where we feel he could change things up or do things differently. We don't have to be jumping off a cliff or blasting Ben Johnson out of a cannon with an overaction. However, we can still look at individual play calling instances or a perceived pattern of play calling, like on 2nd down, analyze, discuss, and criticize it.

I like this quote in total and especially what I bolded.

What I also consider is what appears to be definite objective of play calling is pound your opponent into submission. I think it goes directly back to kneecaps. The thinking is, you may stop me some, but every time I do this it takes a piece out of you and will eventually wear you down to the point you can no longer stop me. Nice side benefit is at that point Lions are controlling the clock, eating up time.

Final thought is I saw 'creativity' in a couple offensive plays KC ran in game 1.  I don't recall all the specifics, but one was around the Lions 5 and they handed the ball off like 3 times in a run play. Creative as crap, resulted in no gain or a small loss.

What we are seeing now is intentional playcalling.  All designed for some overall objective that may not be fully evident until late in the game. Maybe boring to some, but it has produced and this team looks good!

  2. If you get another chance to see the 2 long Gibbs runs, check his finish of each.  On the first one, to the L side, he lowers a shoulder and the KC player gets flattened and Gibbs stays up right but ends up out of bounds. On the second one to the R side when it was 1st and 15, he gets 18 and uses his L arm to swat the defender to the ground, again as Gibbs hits the sideline but remains upright. On the actual broadcast you could see that KC player who got swatted look up like WTF.

    Loved it!

Couldn't sleep either last night.  Ended up rewatching the 1st quarter with NFL+.  Their right tackle did not line up incorrectly or false start in the 1st quarter.  Hutch really got screwed as the game went on.

Could not sleep either, ha! Also glad to see the national media picking up on how much Taylor’s line ups and quick starts were being ignored.

Just don't hurt me again Lions, that's all I ask.

I expect a loss tonight but I do expect the Lions to give the Chiefs a good game. They don't NEED to win tonight but they NEED to have a good showing after they've been touted as the new darlings of the NFL all offseason. Prove that this isn't SOL.

Hey NY, I am of a similar mindset, and excited about a real possibility for a W. Even if they lose, I got to remind myself of 2 things:

    • Last years Buffalo game. No one expected us to play within one completion of a tie game. Joseph misses breaking up that pass by inches and Buff kicks the game winner. Despite the L, I loved that game.
    • Last years finale against GB. Eliminated from playoffs, national spotlight, cold weather and we still kick Rogers to the curb.

Those 2 games for me have me believing these are not the SOL.

    Can't wait!

Definitely could care less how they win.  Its a long season and any W, especially against the Super Bowl Champs, is huge.  Every game matters in the NFL.  Look at last year with all those close game L's in the beginning of the season resulting in us missing the playoffs by 1 game.

Injuries are part of the game and a reason why its so hard to win it all in the NFL....

Big time agree here.  If we are in position for playoffs, and or home field in week 17 absolutely no one will be complaining about a +1 in the W column.

  6. Regarding Buggs:

Considering all the mentions we saw regarding the 53 and how heavily it was titled toward D with what 11 DL? I could see strategy of sitting one DL based on the opponent?  Maybe with KC and Mahomes mobility, Buggs was the "large man out" this week?  Pure speculation.

On another note, since Levi apparently made the roster, do you think he will be starting over Buggs or McNeil at all or have they solidified themselves as the starters at DT for the first few weeks at least?

I don't think there is any way he starts with Buggs or McNeil being available for the better part of the year.  If Levi stays healthy I think there's a chance he might become part of an "equally distributed" 3 guy rotation.

he set off some fireworks like many americans do.  i dont think that means he's stupid, it just means he likes fireworks.  he's young and rich, he's gonna do a lot of the things young men do.

that said, his agent should probably have a conversation with him about risk.

Agree here. Its not like he went skydiving or cliff diving or even riding a motorcycle. I have lit those boxes up for about 7 years in a row as a PART of a large overall display. Me and 7 others.  Not a single problem, we all still have all fingers.  If risk is an issue, without taking any time to cite studies (not doing it) if seems there's lots of everyday activities he needs to avoid also.  Social Media outrage...nothing more.
