I think the argument over command vs power arms just comes down the the irreducible fact that everything you do as pitcher is magnified in the problems it presents to the hitter if you do it at higher velo. Guys who are successful in the majors without a 90+ mph FB have to have really extraordinary added value in their stuff to make up for the time they are giving the batter to see the ball. So the trade off is that if I look at a guy without a power arm, he *might* be the next Greg Maddox, but the odds of that are so low I'm going to take the hard thrower because the odds he develops control (which are low) are still no worse than that the soft tosser turns out to be the next Greg Maddox because those odds are also really low.

Honestly, is anybody even successful without at least a 93+ MPH fastball anymore? Off the top of my head I can't think of anybody.

Interesting article on ESPN about top pitching prospect shutting it down before the draft to protect their arms.  It's insider only though.

    https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/34084142/how-one-pitching-prospect-change-mlb-draft-forever-not-pitching

My main takeaway from this is just anger at the Tiger's organization for using top 10 picks on pitching prospects three times since 2016.

The data they were discussing only applies to prep pitchers, so at least the Tigers have only spent two top 10 picks on them since 2016.

Literally every reliever brought into the game gave up a baserunner. What reliever, who couldn't get outs, should Leyland have stuck with? I guess you could make the case for Smyly since he only walked the only batter he faced. I suppose you could have made the case for sticking with Scherzer until he blew out his arm or finished the game.

What are the odds Smyly gives up four runs if he pitches the inning? Just stupid to have a bunch of guys come in to pitch with a four run lead. Just have Smyly pitch the inning and you'll get to the 9th with the lead.

It's really frustrating when you think of our seemingly never ending rebuild then you see posts like this about the Guardians who basically rebuilt on the fly after years of winning division titles.

Cleveland never needed any type of rebuild, they just had cheap owners. They had a team built to compete for the next five years with a bunch of young talent and just decided to blow that up.

beat me to it.  I think the Royals have rebuilt a few times since the Tigers heyday of Leyland/DD as well.

The team put their eggs the fall in your lap top prospects that horrible teams receive and some has beens who were good for a few weeks.

The Ilitch regime is not about results they are about branding and marketing.  As long as they have the clowns on TV talking about Pick The Stick and they get Rocket Mortgage to sponsor the foul poles and they can trot out some lame slogan like "Detroit Roots" he's fine.  They're fine with selling crappy pizza as long as they can make 15 cents from every sale and build an ugly building downtown.

But hey.... they remodeled the Fox in 1987 so they'll forever be forgiven.

What have the Royals rebuilt to?

  6. One thing I'll say about Torks struggles, is that it is not like he's completely lost to the point of being hopeless. He's still showing a good approach at the plate. A BB% of 11.8 and a K% of 26.9 is not great, obviously, but it's workable, and really not out of the line for a reasonable expectation of his rookie year. Bart had a K rate of 45.4% in 108 PA, Kelenic 37.5% in 96 PA, Adell 34.5% with a BB% of 3.4% in 87 PA. Those guys were sinking while Tork is treading water. He's at the point where he needs to face ML pitching, he's not gonna get any better doing that by hitting AAA pitching.

the home runs are the big fluke. Plus he will be 33 by the end of the season. He won't be part of a contending Tigers team based on our trajectory. I'm looking for guys who will be here in a few years.

Yeah I definitely agree there's no reason to keep trotting him out there going forward.

Anyone else watching the broadcast from out of town on MLB.tv? The source where they clobber you with the same commercial repeatedly? Apparently, it’s Loan Depot’s turn.

I hate hate hate the music playing underneath the customers giving the testimonials. It’s this creepy-sounding vibrato keyboard thing that serves only to distract.

I think I figured out exactly why I hate it: it starts out like Clair de Lune, which causes the song to go in that direction in my head, and then it goes in some other direction, and I become very unhappy.

The moment I see the commercial start, I go “LALALALA!” very loudly until I can locate the remote and press the mute button.

It’s the same as the Draft Kings commercial: the moment I hear the generic studio rock guitars blare out, I race to mute it before the ugly blonde can come on to tell me how I can Make. It. Rain.

Absolutely kills me that they can't get any variation in the ads when you stream.

I understand letting Tork work things out in the majors. I don't get it with Haase...especially when he has no defensive value.

Like Grossman, last year was a fluke. You have to know when to try someone else.

Grossman is a career .247/.350/.380 hitter. Last year he hit .239/.357/.415.

I really wouldn't classify his performance as some big fluke, pretty normal variation.

Too many people looked at Trout, Harper, Judge, Soto, Guerrero Jr., and Tatis Jr. and now thinks every rookie is going to hit like them.  Torkelson is clearly not in their class.

Even Vladdy Jr. was only a slightly above league average hitter through his first two seasons (183 games). A lot of Blue Jays were calling him a bust.

one player at Lakeland with 100AB and >800 OPS, Carlos Mendoza

    three players at WM

four players at Erie, but one is 26, one is 27 and one no-one believes can level up

ONE at Toledo, a 35 yr old journeyman catcher.

as of today, that is it.

Worth noting Pacheco has a .793 OPS in Lakeland, which is good for a 130 wRC+.

Yep thoracic outlet syndrome. Usually not a death knell for pitchers, but he was a shell of himself after that.

How many pitchers have had it and returned to form? I was under the impression it's pretty commonly a death knell for pitchers.

And that's because the Cubs are terrible traders, practically the anti-Rays. Remember, we also got Candelario and Paredes for Alex Avila and Justin Wilson.

It sucks the Cubs also had to be cheap, otherwise we could have gotten the Quintana return for Verlander.

Flores threw 3 shutout innings today with 3ks. Not sure why he only threw 3 innings considering his count was only at 41 but scouring twitter I see nothing about an injury so hopefully they just are monitoring his innings right now or something.

Might be because if it might be because he's set to start twice this week, so a shorter rest than normal before his next start.

Someone had previously reported the plan was two in Fla and then he’d be moving, but things are always subject to change I suppose.

I assume he'll be moved up Tuesday. May or may not play tomorrow before the off day.

was it right after they drafted him then that they didn't bring him to the minors? I just remember we expected him to be pitching and they shut him down. I don't remember complaints about his weight but he certainly wasn't the same pitcher. TBH, I suppose weight doesn't bother a lot of pitchers

Yeah we didn't have him pitch the year he was drafted because Florida had an extended run the tournament. And he performed so well that it looked like he was a steal, probably would have been a top 10 pick if the draft was the CWS. Then as soon as he pitched for the Tigers his stuff was just not there.

I remember Microcline making a comment on his weight after his first season in the minors on the Tigstown podcast.

The Tigers shut him down early after a nice 1st year and he lost the top end of his FB the following season and was not very effective. From then on it always seemed that the question would be could he recover the velocity difference to set up the good slider he always had - then came TJ so he ended up with a bumpy career ride. But he's throwing 95 again, it's not the best FB in the world but he commands it well, and with the slider and change working he should be fine if he stays healthy from here.

That's not exactly right. He showed mid 90s fastball and had a dominant run in the CWS.

His first year was not good, he was overweight, didn't have the sharp slider or velocity on his fastball.
