There's a shortstop out there somewhere who could hit .200 with a .250 OBP and could hit at least 2 HRs in 43 games.  Somewhere,  someone's backup,  a guy in the minors who's blocked.........and it probably wouldn't cost you that much, maybe a backup outfielder or minor league outfielder (we have a glut of those).     This Javy thing must end.     Just eat the money Chris.   You can't tell me that there is no possible shortstop anywhere that can't be an improvement.   Javy is like the the ketchup clinging to the side of an almost-empty bottle.  Can't use it.  Time for a new bottle.  Even a dollar store brand.

    Shorty!

  2. They need to figure out if Tork is worth investing more time in as a cornerstone player. If not, his position is easy to replace on the market.

Keith is a developmental play and the contract gives him a lot of time.

The Baez decision has to come within this calendar year. The money is gone and they have to decide when to cut bait and find another solution at short.

Third base is a black hole. Vierling's performance diminishes if he gets too many plate appearances. Urshels is barely playable and not a long term solution; Ibanez is a decent upgrade over Harold Castro types but if you play him too much, bad stuff starts happening.

Going forward, you can't just wait for development or time to fix your issues with this. If you can't sign a free agent, take some risks and make baseball trades to raise the floor. You're wasting a very good run prevention year becuase they are waiting for something to happen.

  3. They also only have 4 guys with a slugging percentage comfortably over .400...Vierling is at .403 but he's probably going to sink even further as he plays too much.

The rest of the guys are either going to hit singles or have unproductive outs. So if Greene and Canha have an off 15 days, the offense has no chance.

I don't know that this is true.  I was looking over OPS+ on bbref this morning and 87 last year compares quite similar to 88 so far this season.  Bottom 5 in both cases.  Granted, its only one cheap simple metric, but it is disappointing to see it.

Ok perhaps there a lot more bad offenses this year? They are 21st in runs for whatever that's worth.

  5. MLB signed a deal for the early Sunday games on Roku:

Bottom line: The Roku MLB games will not only be free, watching them will not require you to purchase a device. That is, unless you currently don’t have something that can access the Internet.

Bad contracts don't mean much if the money won't be spent when they come off the books. For several years people were speculating who the Tigers would sign when Miggys contract came off the books. They must have lowered ticket prices, right?

This past offseason was a bad free agent class. Guessing the Baez deal made them de-risk everything. Sign guys on the fringes and wait out/develop the hitting over the long term.

Pitching and 'defense' to prevent runs..hope and a prayer for offense until things are settled with various young players.
