I won’t be following this game today to any great extent because this is the day when I go for a walk with one of my pals in the rugged foothills of the idaho botanical garden. Then we usually grab something quick to eat, and today - because his wife has a complication in her schedule - he has an extra ticket (hers) to a live performance of Fiddler on the Roof at the concert hall. So I actually have a life today. Hope we win the series!

at sunrise or sunset ? 😀

Did that stop happening because the Yankees became less monolithically dominant? Or because AL teams couldn’t keep up financially.

George died and the boys dont have the same must win drive

MSU was the better team for most of the night.  An inspired Cornell team trying to give their retiring head coach one last run won the last 10 minutes.    You could see it coming in the last 5 and then an accidental tripping penalty gave Cornell a PP with under 2:00.

They beat heavily favored Quinnipiac just to get in the playoffs.  Wouldn’t shock me to see them beat BU to make it to the Frozen Four.

Andy Bernard would be so proud.

single game elimination hockey sucks too much puck luck for that to be the case

I saw the news about Malloy (out) and Kreidler (in) in the Freep, didn't see about Chafin. Thought he had a chance based on this last two outings.

Petzold's panties will be in a bunch - he wanted Malloy over Torkelson. I hate to have to tell him that Torkelson is a better 1B than Malloy is an OF.

If Malloy goes to Toledo and learns to do something useful with the shoe leather on his left hand he can still be a good piece.

Harris better watch out or Evan is gonna unleash the mighty Gorosh on him

Ray Lane was another guy who could do pretty much anything at any kind of game pretty well. He was one of the group of ne'er do-wells my uncle ran with at MacKenzie HS in the late '40. I remember the two of them running into one another and having a laugh at a Red Wings game at Olympia. Seemed like a totally regular guy.

Speaking of Olympia, there's another funny thing - Olympia was built by a bunch of Detroit guys with no particular Greek connection that I know of, and the Wings were already at Joe Louis when Ilitch bought them from Norris, but Mike Ilitch went for the obvious Greek connection to Olympia and adopted it as his Corporate entertainment  signature, which now all seems like it was completely inevitable.

I just remember Ray being a great studio guy

George and Ernie worked broadcasts together in the early 60's. As a kid I had a hard time keeping track of which of the two southern drawls was which. :classic_sad:

This thread led me to a story written by Lynn Henning a few years ago - almost all of which I already knew - except the part that Mel Ott had been Van Patrick's partner in Det before Kell. Had no idea Mel Ott had ever worked in Detroit.

thats cool... I just feel kell and Bruce Martyn are two under appreciated play by play guys

People will dog Ferrari for the bad strategy.  But they were not winning that race without trying something.  Going the opposite way from the field on tires was the right call IMO.

true but if your gonna do something bold dont do it halfway and all the sudden change direction... at the end of the day how many spots did they lose?

It was already going to be sketchy if I was staying up to watch live.   A delay will make the decision easy.

I DVR'd it sunday morning with coffee and F1 is great

We won’t have a regular season thread for almost three weeks, so I’m posting this here:

     https://www.freep.com/story/sports/mlb/tigers/2025/03/09/detroit-tigers-red-wings-to-air-15-games-on-local-tv-in-2025-full-schedule/82065628007/

Ten Tigers games running on channel 2.1, which is full circle for me, since when I first became a fan in 1969, the Tigers aired on channel 2, called by George Kell and Larry Osterman.

It does make some business sense to move games to, or at least simulcast some games on, broadcast TV as well. If they place the local team behind a paywall such that no one can ever see them unless they pony up the bucks upfront, then how can they spur interest and create new fans for the game? Except through the gambling, of course, which has been Baseball’s growth strategy for a few years now, and the new people that brings in aren’t really fans of the game.

The White Sox will have all their games on broadcast TV here in Big Shoulders, too. Their new Chicago Sports Channel home simulcasts completely on channel 62.2, mainly because they don’t have clearance on Comcast as of yet. Make fun on the White Sox all you like—and we do like—but that won’t hurt their visibility. I wish the Cubs would follow suit with a few games back on GN, too. I would bet most teams will in the next few years.

Hot take... I liked George Kell more then Ernie  when i think of Tigers baseball   i hear George Kell and Al Kaline

Of course that contract also makes him a very attractive trade chip if some of them surpass him as well. Love your players, but never too much!

I think something like a trade has to happen unless they try keith in the OF which  hurts his value more
