This is pretty much how it landed with me, too.

This really does shine a bright spotlight on a clear deficiency of Al Avila: the inability to extemporaneously articulate his thoughts at the level of effectiveness necessary for the top public-facing official of a highly visible organization.

Either Al meant the "drunken sailor" comment as a dig against a beloved icon whom even people not beholden to him still reverentially refer to as "Mister"; or he blurted out the comment cluelessly, not realizing that it could be perceived in that way. Personally, I believe it's the second option, but really, either way, it reflects poorly on Avila as a communicator and leader.

The one thing this is not is surprising, because it reminds us that Avila is an erstwhile scout who basically Peter Principled his way into the Tigers GM job. The Tigers apparently didn't want to go through the time and expense of searching for a replacement for Dombrowski, instead just handing it to the guy who happens to be next in line at the moment. But as pliable as Avila appears to be, an obvious upside for ownership, the deficiency that leads to this kind of faux pas is just as obvious a downside.

I don't see it as a negative thing except for people in the business.  Most fans won't even know he said it.

Al isn't polished but if he's building a good team in the offices, which it seems now that he's doing.... then so be it.  A good leader listens to his people.  A good leader knows what he's good at and what he's not good at.  From reading things about Dombrowksi it sounds like he was a lone wolf.  Maybe Avila is content to share the spotlight and not get too big for his breeches.  He doesn't need the President/CEO title.  He's content to be the old fashioned general manager that rode the train with the newspaper boys.

I feel like that part of the south park movie where they realize they can swear...... it's about to get really interesting in here.

I've been watching that more lately since I am home and it's sure changed from when I would watch like 10 years ago.

  3. I'm working from home so I basically wear sweat shorts, sweat pants, a T shirt, and if necessary a zip up hoodie.   and I have some slippers for when it gets cold.

I really really love not having to wear socks.  My feet sweat a lot of during normal times they are toast. The only time I wear socks and shoes is when I run or work out.

I had one "nice" outfit I would wear if needed... some khakis and a polo.   Most days I will either run or work out after work so putting on "normal" clothes is silly.

Freep: Miller's Bar in Dearborn Listed For Sale

They better not close down Miller's once the sale goes through.

new owners want it to remain as is... which I hope. Admittedly I haven't been there in years because I had closer options for a good bar burger and I thought they were a little pricey there.  But I appreciate the legacy.  People from over seas would come to Dearborn to visit Ford and they all wanted to go to Miller's.

But I'm not sure there's an appetite for it.  People say they love these kinds of places and antique shops and independent retail yet when one opens up nobody goes.  It takes an entrepreneur spirit and when you have one generation running a business the second generation often goes off and does their own thing and by the time they want to retire the 2nd gen are already settled in their career....  A little bar near me just sold... going to become a hamburger and ice cream place.  Previous owner bought the place just a few years ago, he ran some other bars in the area, but he's retiring.  Still have 2 bars within walking distance though.  Another dive bar about 1/2 mile away is still for sale after never reopening from the pandemic.

I think we're also going to see a lot of the old school Chinese Food places close up over the next few years too.  Not because the food is bad but you need people to run them.

The best restaurant in Dearborn, Sahara, had to shut down temporarily due to staffing.  The owner is a great guy but one day it was just him and his brother who showed up.

There are several problems with those sites.  I agree on the privacy issues. If you want privacy then don't share stuff.

I think the biggest problem with mainly FB and Twitter is that they are so big and reach tons of people.  Because of that they have a big influence on elections.  They decide what they want their members to see and they decide what is real or not and it's not always true. There needs to be some rules or laws around elections and these sites.  TV stations air commercials that contain half truths but they're laws saying they must offer the opposition equal time.  I don't think social media falls under the same guidelines and I would bet they reach more people than TV or its at least close.

the equal time thing only applies to over the air broadcasters because in theory the public owns the airways... but cable and satellite makes that a moot point since that's only one way now to communicate.  It's an archaic rule based on ancient technology.  It's the same with nudity and swearing.  You can say shit and fuck on AMC but not on ABC.  You could show a tit on AMC but not on ABC.  Any censorship on cable is self regulating.

Yeah, admirable chutzpah.   It would have been even better if he had announced a federal battery plant or some such there.

And from the looks of it, 90% of those dirty protesters, are probably on some sort of public assistance... you know... socialism I think they call it?

Of all the places Biden could go why would they choose Howell?  Did they not realize the likelihood there would be more protestors than supporters?

Yeah our pick up games of 3 on 3 used to consist of a SS, outfielder(generally between left and center) and pitcher. Anything hit to right side was out if a fielder touched the pitchers mound with possession of the ball before the batter got to first that was out too.

For instance if you hit a ball to the infielder since there was nobody covering 1st base all they had to do was throw it to the pitcher on the mound.

Not sure if that was a universal thing everywhere,  I think it was atleast in my era cause I moved a couple times as a kid and everywhere I played was like that.

    Yep.

Director of Sleep wouldn't make any sense to me.

Director of Biomechanics would totally make sense to me.

I remember reading  Bill James a long time ago write about studying the career of Stan Musial and trying to figure out one stretch of really bad home games. Couldn’t determine why.  Later he had the chance to ask him about it and Stan said “that’s when one of my kids was just born and he wouldn’t sleep.  I was so tired when we were home. Got no rest”.

  10. Tigers announce all coaches will be back for 2022 with the possible exception of Kimera Bartee, who was a late season fill in at 1B after Chip Hale left to coach Arizona.  He will be part of the interviewed candidates, which is what he was told at the time.

    That's a good sign.

  11. I run on a trail, paved, but a trail nontheless and I get annoyed when people on their bikes do not announce themselves until the very end.  One guy that we see just rings his bell.  We don't take up the whole pathway.  Just announce "on your left", like Falcon did in Endgame.   And do it when before you are on our heels.

  12. Coppola was like that on the Godfather II when he had clout.

in part 1 when they go to vegas there is an establishing shot outside a casino.  You see a couple of hippie dudes walking by the door.    The second unit filmed that and they did it intentionally to mess with Coppola, who they did not like.

In California, the rate is still roughly 1% of your taxable value. In California, they cannot raise your taxable value more than 2% per year. People who live in their homes for a long time, pay lower property tax. This was also fun because we would get a customer who bought a house and the previous owner lived there 20 years. The taxable value is reset based on the new market value so the taxes are a lot higher and a supplemental bill is sent to the new owner.

Every states has a different way of doing it and when they collect. The majority of our customers were from California so I remember them the most.

That happens here in Dearborn where people are buying single story houses, knocking them down, save one wall to avoid it being called "New Construction", then they build a 5K sq foot mansion with circular driveway, no back yard, no greenspace, blocking the views of neighbors, often with no respect give to building codes, guy just shows up with a backhoe and starts digging, no Miss Digg, etc..... then they bitch because the taxes went from $3000 a year to $12K a year.

  14. It was better than The Irishman.....

No, it's not as good as those other movies.  Those are among the greatest ever, you just listed 3 Best Picture winners and another that should have won. This wasn't supposed to be an epic.  It's a story he wanted to tell about a reference from The Sopranos.

Haase appears to be one of those guys who, if you give him 250 at bats throughout a season, you can get a lot of value from him, but if you make him an everyday player, you consistently see all the things he can't do.

agreed.... like you said, there's a reason he's still a rookie.

That breaks down to $7,500 a year. In my neighborhood, if my home was worth $250k, my taxes would be $8,400 a year. That is using an SEV of $125k. It also depends to if she is homestead or non-homestead. She has a house in Virginia so one of them would need to be non-homestead.

They pay property taxes on the house in Virginia.  That house was over $1M.  Not sure if that answers your questions.

    I pay about $5K a year.

I used to work in the escrow department of a mortgage company and managed the tax files for customers. Michigan is on the higher end of property tax rates along with other upper Midwest states like Wisconsin and Minnesota. I'm assuming their home is quite expensive and has a high assessed value. I've found Illinois to not be any higher than Michigan when given similar taxable values.

Contrast to popular belief, California is actually pretty low on property tax. Their tax rate is only around 1% but the taxable value on homes is so much higher. You would pay roughly double in property tax on a similarly assessed house in Michigan. Texas is another state I was surprised by how high the property tax was given their lack of regulations and terrible power grid.

The article said they avoided about 45K in taxes since 2015 on a house assessed at 250K.  I don't know if that's the taxable value or the home's value.  I read the article last night and going off memory.
