  1. I was being a bit tongue-in-cheek with saying we need SP just because of our current injury status. That being said, our only pitchers on the 40 man that aren’t in Detroit already or hurt are Englert, White and Wilmer Flores. We’d have to move Lange to the 60-day DL or DFA someone to clear up a spot for any of our other pitchers. Not to mention if we do make a Flaherty trade and he brings back more than one good prospect we’d need a 40 man spot for that as well. As much as I’d like to see Jobe, there’s zero reason to force him up the ladder. i feel like Madris and Lucas are gonna be DFAd around the deadline either way.
  2. This makes Manning and Maedas disastrous years even more frustrating. With Mize out and now who knows how long Olson will be out, it adds an annoying wrinkle to a Flaherty trade. If we deal him (or Skubal), we almost have to acquire a ML capable starter as well just for the sake of having ANYONE remotely competent to eat those innings.
  3. Yeah I was getting at that being the reason why we didn’t call up Baddoo or add Jung to the 40 man. No reason to burn an option on them for a temporary roster move. edit- yes exactly what you said above
  4. I imagine they’re two guys they don’t mind DFAing off the 40 man if we make a trade in the near future also.
  5. We just put Olson on the DL and called up Easton Lucas and also demoted Vilade for Bligh Madris. Id put us in the “needs SP” list at this point
  6. My point was that I wouldn’t want the picks—I’d rather generate the deal around what know we would get. Those draft picks are likely going to be towards the end of the first round and the further you go down, the less likely you are to get someone who will make it to the majors. Even if we take the two minor leaguers with control issues, at least we have data points on them and they’ve made it seemingly to some point in the top few levels of the majors. plus we are assuming that the players we draft even end up signing with us if we go that route.
  7. Personally I’d rather not trade Flaherty unless we know what we are getting and it’s something we would value in return. The team acquiring Flaherty is the one desperate to improve their team immediately and they also know exactly what they’re getting with him. We should have adequate leverage in the situation as the sellers—not just looking to give him away for whatever the other team feels like giving us.
  8. The draft is such a crapshoot for the most part that I wouldn’t really want to give much established talent up for a draft pick. Maybe if we are talking a top 5 pick in a loaded class or something. Very hard to quantify value of a draft pick in baseball compared to football or basketball. So much can go wrong with development and injuries.
  9. Keith was our top prospect who mashed his way through the minors, Maton was a 26 year old who didn’t OPS above .800 in the minors. One will get more of a chance than the other.
  10. Agreed. Avila was the one who hung onto his marginal players way too long. Jacoby Jones, Mikie Mahtook, the Castros, Victor Reyes, Greyson Greiner, etc. Thousands of at bats to well below league average players who rarely showed signs that they could be consistent at this level. Harris hasn’t really done that yet. He’s already jettisoned Maton and Sands, and hasn’t shied away from things like Torkelson, Meadows, Baddoo and Manning going to Toledo for extended time frames.
  11. I wouldn’t support giving up any of our youth or prospects to buy for this year. Adding an impact bat doesn’t make this lineup much more of a contender. Especially with our current bullpen and 4/5 spots in the rotation right now. For me, it all comes down to whether or not Illitch/Harris are willing to pay Skubal to keep him. If they aren’t, then now is the time to move him and get the max return. Keeping Skubal and then letting him walk for nothing or get injured and tank the value will hurt worse than a trade designed around getting a long term competitive core. Not moving Boyd, Fulmer or E-Rod effectively has really hurt the current rebuild. If they’re gonna be cheap, then that’s gonna be obvious in the near future with or without a Skubal trade and we will be pissed about it either way. The worst thing they can do is be cheap and dumb about being cheap.
