All these guys seem so fragile now. I remember following the 1982 Dodgers over the radio when I lived in Tucson - the only baseball I could follow closely - and six of the eight starting batters played 147 or more games and three of the four starting pitchers, because it was a four man rotation then, started respectively 36, 37 and 39 games pitching a ton of innings. And nobody had career ending injuries. The game was so different then.

That’s what I thought too. He experienced minor knee tightness which caused a slight delay in his between-starts throwing program. This resulted in him being pushed back a day in the rotation. (I had to look this up and this is what I found by the way).

I think this is why we’re not seeing anything incredibly dramatic happen in the next two days in terms of trades.

I think you’re right. They noticed an enormous number of payouts for something obscure that a player has direct control over.

I’m prepared to be underwhelmed by what the Tigers do in the next couple days. I’m prepared for them to do something of midling importance, maybe two things of midling importance and then they’ll hope that the last downturn was an inexplicable regression of sorts and will be correcting itself and in fact may be correcting itself right now.

I’m no expert - let alone a strategy expert - but I’m not particularly interested in the short term rental of a 34-year-old guy.

If there is a significant correlation of betting activity exceeding usual activity in relation to his first pitch “waste pitch” percentage, what is the baseline that determines this as an actionable offense? How is it decided that a certain percent exceeds random variation and is intentional? And does a machine make this determination or a person? Having a mute non-conscious calculating device making a decision of this gravity troubles me. And if there is a significant correlation, is actionable culpability directed at betting operations which incite activity of this sort? Can they be charged with anything? I’m also wondering how independent of gambling interests this oversight entity is. I have no idea how this actually works. Is the wolf guarding the hen house? Is Dracula overseeing the blood bank?
