If you're thinking or assuming that airlines in general wouldn't ever cheat their prospective customers, you'd be surprised to learn that some do, especially the biggest ones. Why do you suppose some may notice flight rates rising steadily--the ones you've been watching for a while? First, major airlines are tracking your choices and what you're interested in and are thus raising prices in order to make you want to book your interested flight. They know your search history via your browser's cookies. So, the solution is simply to wipe it clean and then start searching.
