Listening to Campbell press conference (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTvVF0Ivg-U) and he was asked first about Jamo and it wasn't a ringing endorsement. "We just gotta see where he's at with Football. This will be his first week back and uh, so we'll take it every day *shrug*. See how he does." Now what does that mean? Well, like with just about everything else you could read multiple ways: It could be a case of not expecting anything substantial from Jamo anymore so it's like... "meh... we're getting back a 2nd string player... it's nice, but no big deal." Or it could be a case of "We all thought we had a few more weeks to flesh out the plan for Jamo coming back and we're caught a little unprepared right now." Still, even if this is the case I'm a little surprised there is more excitement from Campbell about him coming back.

Week Five: Carolina Panthers (0-4) @ Detroit Lions (3-1)

You have to remember that there's always the chance of a dog-**** game. That happens to even the best of teams playing even the worst of them. Look no further than the Lions game against Arizona two years ago. I certainly don't expect the Lions to lose... they definitely shouldn't. But it could happen... -

If you want to send me a list of prepared replies, I'll post 'em for you. We'll set up a system where each reply has a number and you can just text me a number and I'll post it. 🙂 -
I don't think Goff it's terrible accurate on long throws. He's absolutely had some very nice long throws but most of those have involved busted coverage where the receiver had space to maneuver unabated to make the catch. That said, many of the Williams highlights from college weren't long bombs but short or medium throws where he caught the ball than out ran defenders for big YAC.

It's much ado about nothing really. He's a young man... young men like to blow stuff up. Even old men (like me) like to do that. But, I'm not a multi-million dollar athlete who needs to perform at his physical peak. If I blow off a couple of fingers... it'll make it a lot harder to type, but that's about it. If Jamo blows off a couple of fingers his career might be over. So, it's really not a huge deal.. it's nothing illegal, just not something a professional athlete should probably be doing. It's a red flag, but a small one... like maybe a 3 inch by 2 inch red flag.

I don't think so. Note my final line of the way too wordy post: "That makes me uneasy." I'm uneasy... I'm not thinking Jamo is a flop. I'm not ready to give up on him. I'm not say it was a bad trade/pick/whatever. I'm saying I'm uneasy. I hope that over the next couple of weeks my uneasy put behind me. We'll see.

Week Four: Detroit Lions (2-1) @ Green Bay Packers (2-1)

I guess my question is how often are you predicting it? Here's list of all the 2nd downs the Lions had against GB: Obviously the 4th qtr is very lopsided, but at that point we were really moving into milking the clock as much as possible so I would expect to see a very high number of runs then. Maybe not 0:6, but still that doesn't seem unusually high given the game situation at the time. Prior to the 4th quarter we had exactly 7 pass and 7 run plays on second down. I think the "predictability" of 2nd down run play is more a case of remembering when it happened, and especially when it didn't go for very many yards. I think it's a case of: "Oh, second down we're gonna run, oh, sure enough we ran and for only 2 yards... so predictable" but those things when were didn't run or when we did run but it was a pretty successful run get forgotten. The reality is that prior to the 4th quarter (when we were focusing on running and GB knew it) we had only 5 runs on 2nd down for less than 5 yards, and two of those ended up in a TD. I'm certainly not saying that Johnson is someone we should never question or that he hasn't made mistakes this year. But the narrative that we always run on 2nd down (and that they usually only get 2-3 yards) seems a myth to me, at least in the GB game. -
If I recall correctly, the general wisdom of the time was that Millen really did know football well. He was a pretty highly praised analyst and I think there were rumors of other teams being interested in adding him to a staff, though not necessarily as a GM. That said, knowing football is a big different than knowing how to GM. Just like I've said before that being a great OC or DC does not mean you'll be a good HC, the same applies here. There are skills involved in being a GM that extend far beyond being a good analyst. At the time I was naively in favor of Millen as a "breathe of fresh air" in a front office that seems far too concerned with the numbers of a "old fashion" football. I couldn't have been more wrong. Millen had no knowledge on how to run a team.

I dunno if it was low detail emphasis, or just Schwartz's game plan. I seem to remember that he said something to the effect of: Penalties are a cost of playing on the edge and I'm willing to accept penalties for that extra level of play.

FWIW, I have my concerns with Jamo too. (And I'm going with Jamo, it's 33% faster to type than Jay-mo). There is no smoking gun at all... merely bit and pieces of stories. He hardly figured into the games last year he played in. Was that because he was still learning the NFL? Maybe, but shouldn't he have been able to study up and be ready all those weeks he wasn't active? Maybe, but there's nothing like in game experience, right? Or was it just that he and Goff needed to get comfortable with each other? He did some childish things. Yes, he lit off fireworks early in the morning. He was reportedly was handing out huge amounts of cash to people on the street. That's a bit of a sign of an immature person. But guess what: He's a young guy, so it's not too surprising that he's immature. Will he grow up for time? That's the question. He gambled on games will with the team. Yup, and it was wrong. He's responsible for knowing the rules and he didn't know or didn't follow them if he did know. But it's also a very weird rule (imho) so I'm not surprised at all if he didn't know it. He was up and down in Training Camp/Preseason. He looked good and then he didn't look good. Then he had a good day, then there were reports he didn't have a good day. I suspect that this is somewhat typical of many NFL players, especially young players. But we expect a first round pick to be good all the time. Is that realistic though? There was also a semi-cryptic comment from Holmes about Jamo and responsibility. He got injured in preseason... again. Certainly concerning. We wanted to see more of him and see his gel more with the team and Goff. But injuries are part of the game. We have not idea right now if he's a guy who will always battle injuries or if this is just a fluke. So obviously I'm rebutting myself repeated above, and that's sorta my point. None of these 5 things I listed would be anything that would cause me to worry about a player by itself. None of them are really a big deal. But when you put all of them together... it just starts to make me feel uneasy. Every one of those things is a question mark. Is he injury prone? Is he immature and unlikely to "grow up"? Is he unwilling to understand and/or follow the rules? Is he unwilling to put in the work to get better with the team? The answer to each of those, right now, is "we don't know, but probably not." However, when you have that many question marks with a player, the possibility of one of them ending up being "yes" increases. That makes me uneasy.

The funny thing is that I'm not usually impressed with him in the game either, but then I look at the stats after the game and he quickly ends up have a respectable game. -

Time for the offense to step up and make the defense injuries a non-issue.
