Maggie Haberman's story is not unlike a lot of "serious reporters" who are compromised along the way. A bunch of serious reporters have been in the pay of the Russians with ( and without knowledge (dating back to the 20s). I would say a lot of Pentagon reporters are fully in the thrall of the MIC. Just to be 100% accurate those would be the land based leg of the triad. The SLBM are based in Georgia on the east coast and Washington on the west coast.

Russia is trying to build a buffer on the border so Ukraine can't attack into Russia proper or hit their logistics facilities because of someone in the US National Security community's or maybe the EU's bedwetting attempts to prevent escalation. Russia always takes advantage of the hand wringing of the weaker party.

There is a phrase in the world I live in: "you can't make your opponent ten feet tall, if you want to put them six feet under." We clearly don't want to see Trump dead from this process but we do see him being punished in a way that will be a deterrent to future Presidents.
