I have been slowly grinding my way through this Ian Toll book about the War in the Pacific (Twilight of the Gods). I mentioned it before. So, another religious reference which might be amusing to all. The Kamikaze attacks on the US task forces covering the landings on Okinawa were incredibly persistent and deadly. They had been almost a constant state of danger for the naval forces since Mid-March and by mid May 1945 everyone was at their physical, emotional and psychological limits. Toll, describes exactly how fatigued and stressed the crews of aircraft and AA batteries were by the second month of this. Apparently Admiral Jocko Clark of TF 58.1 was so weary of the strain on the air crew that he sent this out to the crews of his TF "see Hebrews chapter 13, verse 8" I snorted when I read that. Good profane use of language to describe the situation.

New Orleans is one state away from Alabama and Texas. Also, Antarctica is very far from all of the 4 CFP teams. There are places in the Pacific ocean in which they are closer to the International Space Station than they are to other populated areas on the ground. But that is only when the ISS is overhead. If they played the game outdoors north of 60' latitude, they would need lights because its dark this time of year. And I'm tired and being silly...good night.

Reading Ian Toll's very good WWII in the Pacific series. Today being December 7 reminds me that the wartime leaders of Japan manipulated their people using what they claimed was in Shinto and in Bushido to conduct suicide attacks. Toll points out that the concept of suicide attacks was never in their tradition. It was only after they lost their advantage in air power and the US industrial might was producing naval, air and ground forces far surpassing by leaps and bounds the Japanese military that they cynically rewrote their traditions and convinced everyone to go along with suicide attacks. Since the people were completely cowed by propaganda and total surveillance of their every word and the military had taken over the lives of their children there was no way to resist -- even among military officers who knew it was all bunk. This gets me back to the original point about theocracy being in harness to kleptocracy.

Michigan taught ND how to play football. We have the most wins in CFB history. We lag only Penn State and Indiana in the number of living alumni. This story is based on some appalling situations where parents were able to abuse their kids because they were protected by the lack of oversight of homeschooled kids. I have colleagues who did the homeschooling thing because they lived in places with terrible schools (e.g., Texas, Florida). Many other potential reasons why people don't want their kids being socialized within the community but...if it also enables this great evil...yeah, lets get some oversight.
