  1. 31 games into the season and the Tigers have only lost 6 games by more than 2 runs. Then again, they've only won 8 games by more than 2 runs. So more than half (17 of 31) have been 1-run or 2-run games.

EDIT: that may not be that unusual. Seems that around 25% of MLB games are decided by 1-run, and around 45-50% are decided by 2 runs or fewer.

Lol...I've read about the Ducky Medwick incident before but I never saw that video. Poor Ducky!

This is a great recap of the 1934 World Series, specifically the Medwick incident. Radio clips, video clips, shots of the Briggs Stadium bleachers, interviews decades later with Greenberg and others. Imagine if social media was around back then - Tigers win their first pennant in 25 years, take a 3-2 series lead, then lose the final two games at home including a Game 7 blowout.

I think it shows you can't tell just by looking. And you're right: it shouldn't matter. And I don't think it does here. But I did find it remarkable based on his look.

“You know when it comes to racism, people say: " I don't care if they're black, white, purple or green"… Ooh hold on now: Purple or Green? You gotta draw the line somewhere! To hell with purple people! - Unless they're suffocating - then help'em.” — Mitch Hedberg,

according to Wikipedia, he is biracial and identifies as black.

Reminds me of a story about this elderly neighbour I had who was from Hawaii but living in Canada. I asked him on Canadian election day whether he was eligible to vote. He replied, "yes, I'm bi". His wife nudged him and said "you're dual, Ed, you're dual, not bi".

  5. Story in the Vancouver paper about Manu getting picked.

    https://vancouversun.com/sports/football/nfl/detroit-lions-ubc-thunderbirds-offensive-tackle-giovanni-manu-nfl-draft/wcm/9db0e8c4-f9f2-4e86-a025-2a9ba8a122f5

It was a hyped up Detroit Lions head coach who helped break the news to UBC Thunderbirds left tackle Giovanni Manu that he was Detroit’s fourth-round pick in Saturday’s NFL Draft. “I received the phone call and heard Dan Campbell yelling: ‘Are you ready to be a Lion?’ and the rest was history,” Manu, 23, explained via text message on Saturday. “The phone call is something I’ll never forget. I’ll forever remember this moment. It is life changing.”

Manu sees similarities between Campbell and Nill (note: the UBC coach). “They are the exact same in terms of football mentality and the way they approach the game of football — both love old-school football, which preaches hard, consistent work,” Manu relayed. “Both are from blue collar family backgrounds and I fit right into that type of mindset and approach to football.” Nill buys into that connection, too, saying that Manu “will be able to thrive in Coach Campbell’s culture, because that’s our culture.”

I've been starting to do some research of my own by reading up on and watching videos from this years crop of draft prospects. Stan, Sloth or anyone that follows juniors/international juniors/colligate hockey who are prospects the Wings could realistically be looking at in this years draft? ?

I'll have to defer to Sloth and others. It's no false modesty of mine to say that I probably know less about draft prospects than any regular contributor to the Red Wings section. Exception is if a player plays for WHL's Vancouver Giants or AHL's Abbotsford, or is a Western Canadian gaining "exceptional" status.

6-8, 350 lbs Canadian OT SUMMARY: Werner “Giovanni” Manu was born in Tonga before moving to Canada at age 11. He was a natural at basketball, then started playing football when he attended Pitt Meadows Secondary in 2013. Between his freshman and sophomore years in high school, he grew five inches and put on almost 80 pounds. He continued to play basketball (averaged more than 30 points per game as a senior) but was recruited for football. He enrolled at the University of British Columbia and earned the starting left tackle job as a freshman. He was a four-year starter for the Thunderbirds, also seeing time at guard. His unpolished tendencies are easy to spot on tape — he plays too narrow and off balance in the run game with late hands in pass pro. But he moves really well for his size, espec ially out in space, and punishes anyone in his way. Overall, Manu isn’t NFL ready, but he is a highly intriguing developmental tackle with rare athletic tools that might get him drafted.

Manu is a raw offensive tackle prospect with rare size, long arms and good quickness for his size. He didn't play against a high level of competition at the college level, but he is a powerful run blocker who overwhelms defenders on tape. He flashes a strong punch, and his wide frame makes it tough to get around him when he is in pass protection. -- Steve Muench

lol, I actually know this guy!

Coffey was one of the best skaters I've ever seen...

    He was beautiful to watch.

In Canada, one of Coffey's best-known plays starts at the 1:10 mark of this clip with this intercepted pass and skate back up the ice that flips the rink and leads to the overtime winning goal against the Soviets 30 seconds later.

12 years later, in a World Cup semi vs Sweden, around the 50s mark of this clip he goes from his own goal line to the opposing blue line, leading to the OT winning goal.
