  1. I never liked the Paredes deal. And I blame Hinch for never playing him enough to find out. It leaves me wondering about his ability to judge talent. The dude always showed a keen sense of the strike zone, fielded competently and just looking at him showed power was there.

Greene got hurt and Al was under pressure to show progress so he gambled. He gave up a high draft pick also and Meadows was already declining badly in the field and somewhat at the plate while his salary was rising.

    Typical Tampa move.

Forty-two more wins and he's 41 years old now and getting injured every year now? I don't. Which only means he'll do it.

Age, injuries and the difficulty of pitching enough innings to get a win makes it a steep climb. If anyone can do that its Verlander.

Hope whoever replaces him at 1B can scoop as many bad throws as he is capable of.

Didn't he just miss a scoop two games ago ? And can't all first baseman scoop throws. It seems like a basic skill to play the position. I don't think this is a measure of a good first baseman. I can't think of any regular first sacker who played for Detroit or any team that can't scoop throws.

  4. Defense is just ignored in baseball and especially in Detroit over the past decade or so, everybody gives it lip service but they don't really commit to it. It's not just the errors on paper but the missed plays, missed cuts-offs , mental mistakes etc.  I mean what good is a 2 run homer when you give up unearned runs ? Errors will happen but when managers put players in positions they can not play well it's the definition of insanity.

The old adage "if he can hit we will find a place for him",,,well so will the batted ball.

Let's try an outfielder at 1st base. What's the worst that can happen? 🤣🤣

I bet Verling is better than Tork at first right now and Carpenter could be just as good after training not straight away. Tork stinks as a first baseman. He is a DH.

I would guess the CF experience worked against him in this case. Of what little OF he has played, he's played more center, so yielding is probably not a habit. But no matter - I don't care how experienced two OFs are, until they play next to each other for a while and learn each other's tendencies speed, call style, this kind of thing will *always* happen. There is a trust level that develops. In this case, Parker did pull off but Wenceel probably isn't sure and is still spooked. I'm just saying it's not really the players' fault when you put them in situations they've never worked through. And putting them out there may still have been what the team needed to do, that's not the point either. My point is just not to hammer the player for a confluence of circumstances that put them in a position where that kind of breakdown can be expected.

It's the downside of constantly moving players around. I guess the upside is match ups and happy clubhouse because everyone plays but to me it's not optimal. Perhaps with better players it will be less frequent.

I don't really want to watch a recording once I know what has already happened (and I will know because I can't help checking!).  I guess I could see going back to look at highlights or checking out a young player I haven't seen a lot of.

I like the condensed games on MLBTV. About 9 minutes and you see parts of almost every inning.

And carpenter, a below average outfielder, will solve the problem at first how exactly? Can you show your work on that one please?

Just speculation of course but it wouldn’t hurt to take some reps pre game and try in the future because he does stink in the outfield as Tork does at first. Carpenter had a better arm. So if he proves good it’s one less bad outfielder and one less poor first baseman.
Isn’t multiple positions the Hinch requirement anyways ?

I’m pretty sure Harris understands that a team can’t build a consistent winner off 13 utility players, so I really doubt that is his long-term smartest-guy-in-the-room plan to win rings.

I think we are still in the restructuring phase, and will be for another year or two, in which we are building toward a situation where we will have a team of stars, strong positional players, and versatile bench guys, along with ace, solid rotation, and solid bullpen. The rot was pretty deep when he came aboard, not just in players but in infrastructure, and there has to be equal amounts of investment on both sides to fashion a consistent winner.

Based on players he inherited, out of which he has to determine who we can save and who we can dump, we seem to be closer on the pitching side than the positional side. If the hitting part is going to get fixed, it’s going to take another year or two, not another series or two. We simply don’t have all the horses we need to win with, and they will need to be acquired via draft, trade, or free agency. I think it’s becoming clearer, though, that this group of thirteen will not be the group we are going to ride or die with.

Already this season has been a roller coaster of highs to low. Being a fan only makes that worse. Sitting here today on the down slope it does seem we do have quite a long way to go unfortunately. I suppose that's why Harris is moving more deliberately thank I like. It's just we have sucked so bad for so long and to see the Orioles not only pass us but reach the top is frustrating. Greene looks good and Keith maybe but at the major league level thats it for position players. I guess Verling might take another step but even so that is three players that can help with the bat and make plays in the field. The rest are one trick ponies.

They are 10-9 to start...I'm not even worried about the 'competition' in the division. They won't go anywhere until the young hitters figure it out. There are no sweeping changes to make.

This is the bottom line on April 18th. Quite a bit can happen between now and the end of the year and hopefully most of it’s positive. Having said that they need to add first base to their planning at least on some level. Tork has played first probably since he was 10 years old. He’s a DH. Take his negative defense away and he might have some value. Playing first base he has to hit 25 homers to be replacement level.

One of my prized possesions are these tigers seats. My kids were little and we did not have much disposable income back then and my wife almost killed me but the rest is history!
