Ya know, I really liked Trei Cruz when he was drafted and seems to be coming into his own this year . . . . but . . . . just realized he is 26 years old all ready. Thought he might be the old dude on the Erie team but there are seven guys older.
We probably would have finished in 1st place and not needed a game 163 in 2009 if we did not acquire Wasburn (-0.7 WAR) and Huff (-0.8 WAR). Lots of negative WAR for two month rentals.
Did not happen to Vest, he was Rule 5 drafted by Mariners from Tigers and later returned to Tigers. No other team picked him up after the Mariners removed him from the 26 man roster and was returned to Detroit.
Guys are traded a lot day of Rule 5 draft, I never said otherwise.
No other team can claim him unless the Tigers pass first and the Cubs release him, which I doubt they do. If the Tigers want him back, they pay the Cubs 1/2 the Rule 5 fee back. If the Tigers do not want him, the Cubs will assign him to one of their farm teams, probably AAA.
Gage Workman designated for assignment by Cubs. Should the Tigers bring him back or let the Cubs keep him? I think he would be a strong player to have at Toledo, preparing for another shot at the majors.
I watched spring training games almost everyday and noticed that the umpires were calling balls & strikes more efficiently than they are now in the regular season. The ball & strike calls have been horrible across the board so far since the regular season started. The ABS system seemed to challenge the umpires more in spring training, not wanting any of their calls reversed and the umpires were mostly correct when a batter, catcher or pitcher challenged. ABS needs to be implemented ASAP for the regular season.
My two take aways from todays game. 1 - Malloy needed to see a few more pitches before swinging at the second pitch he saw. Horrible AB. 2 - Keith does not need to be sent down but he needs to sit 2-3 games and get his head out of his butt. Still think he will have a good year but I hope not to see him playing 1B again this year.
