  1. Ed Romero played one year for the Tigers. I know it's just a fun list, but I think some of thosre guys might have been better fielders than their metrics suggested. There were a lot of utility players on the list and I have always suspected the metrics don't work well for them because they had small sample sizes at every position, so your combining a bunch of unstable numbers together. For example, I remember Flynn and Romero were regarded as good and versatile fielders, but who knows? I can confirm that Tom Veryzer did indeed suck though. I do remember Meyer's neck roll.
  2. Your reasoning is probably correct, but his career is still remarkable.
  3. It's so great having him be the boss of the agency where my organization hopes to receive contracts.
  4. More like several cuts below. Sure, catchers didn't need to hit back then but Bergen was really extreme. Nobody came close to being as bad as him.
  5. That is pretty bad, but the all-time champion in hitting futility is this guy: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bergebi01.shtml 21 OPS+ in 3,234 PA But he was gritty and clutch and had a veteran presence.
  6. He probably does. Medication works really well for that. It kept my father going for about 15 years, but he was retired, let alone being President.
  7. He didn't put on a tough guy show though.
  8. I didn't say "good". I said "better". 😀
  9. Right, you can't bank on any prospect being a good major league player, let alone a generational talent. The good thing is that the Tigers have more top propects than they have had in a really long time. This gives them a better chance that a couple will emerge as above average major leaguers.
  10. I don't see a benefit either. One obvious negative is that it's a waste of resources.
  11. If you regard division titles as an important achievement, I can see where one might think that a tie is not as pure as an outright title. However, the magic number is not about purity.
  12. Not really. He has a better chance of making MLB money over there.
  13. Is that what Robert Kennedy Jr has?
  14. The 1899 Cleveland Spiders were 20-134 with a run differential of -723. https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/CLV/1899.shtml
  15. I wish he was too. They would have a better line-up with him.
  16. I think they want 4-team divisions because it gives the impression that the local team has a better chance at the playoffs. If fans are that shallow though, how do they follow the wildcard races? Isn't that more confusing for them? It is easier if they have no divisions and just take the top 6 teams (or 7 or 8 or whatever they end up with) Then everybody knows that their team has to finish in the top 6 and they don't have to do any math.
  17. Barron Trump knows how to turn on a computer. He's got a great future in technology.
  18. I don't know about t-mobile, but it sounds like you would have to purchase both mlb.tv and ESPN in order to watch the games. In other words, you'd have to pay more. That's how I read it anyway.
  19. I never said anything about the owner. What's the longest contract Scott Harris has ever given as a GM of any team? Valdez is going to be 32 and will probably get 5/180. Would Harris do that?
  20. We all know the exact number of games will be determined by the maximum profit making level which the owners can achieve in their negotiations with players. Logic will play very little role. If logic mattered, they would not have four team divisions.
  21. I agree. I still like the game and its history. It's been a big part of my life since I was a kid, but they have been doing everything they can to water down the experience for me. It seemed like baseball kept its continuity and tradition longer than any other sport, but they eventually sold out. Being inundated with gambling promotions throughout every game is really turning me off more than anything. It really cheapens the game, exposes MLB as a hypocritical profit making machine with no feel for the game and its history and threatens the integrity of the sport.
  22. Oh boy...
  23. It was hard to believe that Jake Rogers was the best #34, so I just looked it up. Kevin Gausman and Kodai Senga both wear #34.
  24. Valdez goes through periods like this every year, so I don't think he's costing himself money. He is inconsistent within a season, but very consistent from year to year. He's been very healthy too, so he might not be as much of an injury risk as other pitchers. I don't expect them to get anyone at his level, but if they do decide to spend big, I could see him being their target. I don't ecpect them to spend a lot on a position player. Unlike you, I think they had legitimate interest and a real shot at getting Bregman last year. I believe he might have signed with the Tigers if the Red Sox hadn't made their unusual offer. He's a year older and coming off an injury riddled year, so he will have less appeal to the Tigers and everyone else if he's making similar demands. I don't even think about Tucker. I am hoping they make a run at a good starting pitcher, but I think it will be another year where they hunt for bargains. Who will be their Gleybor Torres this year?
