It’s interesting that people are always trying to mock smaller speed rushers like Chop Robinson to the lions as a complement to Hutch. That just isn’t their style, they want a big, strong presence at de to set the edge and control a gap first, and rush the qb second. They do incorporate a pure speed rusher, but it’s a part time position on passing downs, and they are not going to commit premium resources for that.

I think I would be fine if the edge across from Hutch did that, even if they weren't a natural pass-rusher like Hutch or Houston. The problem last year was that when Charles Harris or either Okwara were on the field, we might as well have had a mannequin across from Hutch. And then they double-team Hutch, and then the QB has all day long.

  2. If we weren’t in the running for Chark at 1/5 I don’t think we are in the conversation for Boyd.

I do think there is a chance they like what they have at the position. I think they expect a lot from Jamo in 2024. If that’s the case, you have four very reliable pass catching athletes in ASB, LaPorta, Gibbs, and Jamo. It’s not like we would have put Reynolds in that group last year, he was just a nice commodity to have… Any more than that is just delicious gravy on this offense. A luxury. Which I have no doubt they would have taken in the draft if the situation presented itself, but it didn’t. They’ve still got Kalif, DPJ, and (hopefully) Antoine Green behind that group, which is not a trio completely devoid of talent.

Where was this being offered? I'm wondering if it's an official UFL or did they just buy the tickets for the game themselves?

I was sent an email from the official Panthers email account server.

Officially speaking, I'm a season ticket holder, so that could be why I got the email. I've not attended a game in my season tickets (have sold each game for profit to help pay for Lions season tickets lol), but they probably don't care about that so long as the seats are being used and the people in them are buying beer and food.

relevant for what reason?  theyre a clown show that got housed the minute they stepped up in competition.

it will be the same thing next year.  shedeur can probably win them some games with his ability, but not against good teams.  that team is nothing but mercenaries who dont care about winning, their only concern is themselves.  and that starts with the coach.  deion is the same way, a selfish narcissist.

and you have a qb who is obviously favored by the coach and who only cares about himself.  he'll throw the team under the bus when they dont play well, he'll sulk.  no one will want to give it all for a guy like that.

not to mention the lack of talent up front.  it takes a while to build a solid oline.  you cant just import pieces in the portal every year.

Relevant for the sake of relevance. They were an afterthought until he came around and I think they just like having people actually watch and care for a change.

I wouldn't be surprised if they tire of him though, especially if/when he continues losing and eventually leaves the program worse than he found it while deflecting blame. Hopefully the mainstream media will go away too when his schtick gets old and he isn't winning games.

deion sanders continues to be a bad, small, petty person.

why anyone would send their kid to colorado is beyond me.  theyre not even good at football.

I have a buddy who is a CU alum and I don't think a lot of them care how crazy he is. He's made them relevant again for the first time in 30 years.

I just said pro bowler.  I don't think whatever combo of guys they put on the line will be a non factor.  If your coverage is better there is a lot more you can do up front to put pressure on the QB.  I think the biggest factor will be what we do against mobile QBs.  Which always seems to kill us.  All of this is if the rookies and the guys they picked up in the off season are as good as predicted.  Good thing is we also have some depth there.  For me, this is the year Glenn needs to prove himself.  He has more talent now, so the excuses are gone.

I don't think it was Holme's strategy to have a deep secondary, its just the way the draft fell.  That's why I like him.  He went with talent and then when  you have good coaches you have to flexibility to with your strengths.  I would of been fine if Arnold was gone and Turner or Verse slipped more and went with them.

I hope it won't be a non-factor. But Charles Harris + the Okwaras sure were. Davenport + a healthy Houston should be better. Maybe not great, or even good. But better.

Any WR they may sign will be no better than the sixth offensive option, behind Montgomery, Gibbs, ASB, LaPorta, and Williams. They’ll be fighting with Kalif Raymond for three targets a game.

I’d guess Brad has given Chark’s agent suggested terms on a one year deal, but both parties are waiting for the market to settle after the draft and before training camp. But Chark developed a rapport with Goff and it would be surprising if there wasn’t mutual interest. I would love to see him back.

If you're Chark it'd probably be nice to win a game or two and be thrown to by Goff instead of Bryce Young too.

No easy task. A team trying to build for consistent quality will always be at a disadvantage to teams willing to mortgage their futures for a short run. The CBAs and salary cap systems try to force any budding dynasties to be short. He's going to have to be a lot smarter than the average GM  - and maybe he is.

As long as you keeping hitting drafts out of the park, you can be successful in the NFL. It's when you start whiffing on repeated drafts that you get in trouble, because you either have to pay $90MM to the guys you drafted well four years ago, or you have to let the position go unaddressed.

I don't think people understand how ugly the Hurts contract can get. The Eagles added 4 void years to his contract. They literally cannot release him for the next 6 years without taking an over $90 million cap hit. They could release him after 2027 and spread that hit over two years. Even if he plays his entire contract, they will still have a $97 million cap hit at the end unless they re-sign him. They basically gave him this contract with the expectation that would sign him to another extension. Risky proposition for a QB that had only one good year and relies on his legs.

They have pictures of him in a casino inside a glass case labeled "break in case of emergency"

I think having a good (and possibly great) secondary will be almost as helpful to Hutch as another high end edge rusher.  You don't need another pro bowler on the opposite side when you have a good secondary.  You can afford to blitz when you have better coverage.  I am also curious how Campbell looks in his second year with a better secondary.  If you look at the whole off season, our defense is significantly better.

I agree with what I bolded. I agree with the bit about Hutch being better as well, but I think that only works to an extent. If Love or Williams or JJ are able to break out of the pocket and extend a play because Hutch is closing in on one side, and Alim/Reader are collapsing the interior, but the other side is a total non-factor, no secondary in the NFL can be expected to defend receivers for 10+ seconds.

But these are likely rich people problems, which is nice to have for a change.

  12. I expect the Lions to still add a WR. Maybe an edge rusher too, but I'm more doubtful of that.

I think Tyler Boyd either wants too much or too long. As time goes on, maybe he'll sign a CJGJ-like one-year deal (and actually prove it, unlike CJGJ).

DJ Chark makes a ton of sense. Like, as much sense as Kevin Zeitler.

Michael Thomas makes sense too between his injury history and Saints-to-Lions connections.

If I had to say what I thought was the biggest weakness on the Lions right now, I would say it's the edge opposite Hutch. I know they grabbed Davenport, but I'm not sure how reliable he will be. It sure would be nice to see what Hutch could do when teams didn't double team him for once.

Maybe it's a part of their master plan to drive his price down next offseason lol

They could still grab a free agent on a one-year prove-it. Yannick Ngakoue was not good last year with the Bears but is only a year removed from two straight 9+ sack seasons. Carl Lawson is in a similar boat, but to a slightly lesser extent on the past success. Calais Campbell is available too, but he'll be 38 when the season begins. He might be trying to wait until late in the season to hop on a contender. All three of them might be interested in one-year deals.

I'm very doubtful they pick up a veteran OT unless it is just to compete for a spot in training camp. Eight roster spots on the line are likely accounted for between the starters, Mahogany, Manu, and Skipper... Picking up a veteran OT for more than the veteran minimum would mean they are ready to throw in the towel on both Sorsdal and Awosika before camp even begins. I think those two will compete for the OT3 role with the other getting a practice squad invitation. Skipper is OT4, he's more likely to come in for a jumbo TE set than he is to actually be a regular OT.

If we deal with injuries, then you'll hopefully have the other of Sorsdal and Awosika on the practice squad to call up, and can also add a vet at that point. But the rookie additions should allow Sorsdal and Awosika to focus exclusively on the OT position this offseason, which will hopefully relate to at least one of them showing marked improvement.

Master Les needs to consult his former padawan on how to do this draft thing.

The Rams were desperate to replace Donald, and that's what happens when you get desperate. They were probably hoping for Byron Murphy to fall to them at #19, and when he didn't they reached for Verse. Then when they saw three DTs go in the first five picks of the second round, they panicked, sold the farm to move up, and reached for Fiske.

  16. When Holmes traded Hock at 1-6, I remember he claimed that he would have done it even if we were 6-1. McNeill might test that.

If you can get a low-end first for him from a team like Miami, Houston, or Cincinnati, or a high-end second from Denver or New York (Giants), I think you have to think long and hard about it - if, and only if, you've decided you can't afford to keep him. You're not in desperation win-now-at-all-costs mode. If his replacement struggles, you're going to get flak for it, no doubt. But if you're Dan Campbell losing your best interior defender, you have to treat it just like you would a season-ending injury. Next man up.

It's probably accurate that it makes more sense to make the decision at the end of 2024, but you can't tag both McNeill and Decker. Hopefully they can extend at least one of them. I'd probably prefer Decker if I'm being honest, the offensive line is the heart of this team.

The scuttlebutt on the Rams forum is that Goff is asking for the same money as Herbert. Not sure what their source is. I'm assuming local sources. Herbert signed for 5/262 so 4/210 would be about right for Goff. Probably 100+ guaranteed.

At least his agent isn't releasing publicly that he wants more guaranteed money on the first day of the draft when everyone is watching like another player who played QB for both the Rams and Lions.

  18. 1 hour ago, Motown Bombers said:

I think 4/200 is the floor. Hurts, Burrow, Herbert, Jackson all signed 5 year deals for 250+. Goff is older than those QBs so I think it will be a 4 year deal.

I don't think he'll reset the market above Burrow, Herbert, and Jackson, though that's probably where his side started in negotiations. I could see him getting 4/210 to put him over top of Jalen Hurts and roughly even with Lamar and Herbert... I agree the four years makes the most sense based on his age and what the Lions have done with ASB. It would align those two contracts.

Ultimately though I think both sides want it done, so it'll get done... eventually.

This report says they view him as RG. Maybe if he works out at RG they would eventually kick him out to RT then move Sewell to LT.

    https://atozsports.com/detroit/if-this-guy-was-at-a-divsion-one-school-hed-be-a-first-round-draft-pick-get-to-know-new-lions-offensive-lineman-giovanni-manu/

Good find. That would make him the potential RG of the future, Mahogany the tentative LG, with some flexibility if it's not working (considering Glasglow is effectively signed through 2025), and leaves the door open to re-signing Decker. We will need to find a Center at some point, but if Ragnow stays healthy he is signed through 2026 (with an easy out after 2025).

If I had to guess though, they're going to play it slow with Manu. Let him develop and let his skills tell you what he can do. Hope you get a starting guard but if he's got the quickness, let yourself be surprised with a franchise tackle. If he needs more than a year and Zeitler leaves, maybe Mahogony can play RG in 2025, or you sign another one-year guard.
