  1. I do not think DeJong would beat 2/$17M as a free agent, but that is what he is owed. so the player cost would be nominal (maybe more than Bryan Garcia but much more than Drew Carlton)

    Paul DeJong ss
    6 years/$26M (2018-23), plus 2024-25 options

They could trade for Paul DeJong of the Cardinals. Poor hitter but great glove and was 1.6 war last year. Then load up on pitching. After all the expensive free agents shortstops get signed then circle back and try to trade for good minor league shortstop thats blocked even if they are two years away.

different approach, but this is  makes a lot of sense as well.

seriously, do we know who is in charge of trades now? is it still Al, because I still have little confidence in his trading abilities

  3. Gruden has got to be the most overrated coach in the history of the NFL. I cannot believe anybody fell for his BS intensity act.

Not defending him at all, but it unclear to me who is leaking these emails and why. They came from the WFC investigation, and so far the only person to get in trouble is .. the guy who sent horrific emails to NFL management bros while working at ESPN?

  4. Yankees and Red Sox both tried to use Apple watches on an organizational level to steal signs before they were found out and fined. Both also used video rooms to steal signs before and after 2018. The Astros were really good before, during and after cheating. They also cheated really well.

Sure, this works fine for us, but I'm pretty sure JV can do better than $20MM guaranteed over two years.

maybe he can, but it is actually one year for 20M, he could sign with anyone for 2023 if they don't pick up the options

generally, I would think there is a number where JV is getting a good enough guarantee that overlaps with the risk the Tigers would want to take

  6. 1 year contract, with option, 20M guaranteed

    2022 - 10M

    2023-24 - 10M buyout, or 30M each year

JV gets the same $$$ as QO from Houston; if Tigers pick up option, it is 3/70M

this costs the Tigers a draft pick

(Max is going to get as much as 3/120 from the Dodgers)

  7. if you add in Holland, Erasmo Ramirez, Nunez, Mazara, and Ramos, Avila spent about $15M on non-Grossman/Schoop free agents.

probably would have been better off signing 1-2 players who can actually impact the team.

not sure how much Krol, Hutchinson or Garneau made.

I've seen him penciled into next year's rotation a couple times, but you all know Peralta is a free agent right?

yes, but assumption is that he has found something that works and would want to stay. he made $1.5M* so makes sense to have him stick around for $3M. good for him if he can get more elsewhere.

*Urena got $3.25M and Tehern $3M

I don't think you can do that. If the team goes to arbitration they are obligated to pay whichever award is made - in effect it would become like any other MLB contract - guaranteed. If you don't want to risk paying the award you have to give the player his release before arbitration - he's then a free agent.

if I remember this correctly, a decade ago the union flipped out because some team cut a guy late in spring training who won his arbitration case. union claimed that is why he was cut and team screwed him by cutting him after other opportunities filled. team just had to pay him a portion of his salary. totally within rules

Players on arbitration contracts who are cut on or before the 16th day of Spring Training are owed 30 days' termination pay (based on the prorated version of his agreed-upon arbitration salary). A player cut between the 16th day and the end of Spring Training is owed 45 days' termination pay (based on the prorated version of his agreed-upon arbitration salary). The arbitration salary becomes guaranteed if the player is on the 25-man roster when the season begins.

  10. 2022 is Boyd's 4th and final year of arbitration. he made 6.5M in 2021, so if they offer him arbitration, he gets at least 5.2M (80%). seems like a lot for a guy who might get 10 starts in. 5M probably gets you a decent 5th starter w/o injury concerns.

they are going to need to work something out before the arbitration deadline. like 2022 at $3m, with team option at $10M for 2023, or a $2M buyout. Boyd gets $5m minimum.

Drew Smyly and Michael Pineda both signed 2/10M contracts coming off TJ, with expectation that they would not ptich year 1
