although his pick skills aren't exactly exceptional.
doesn't he have - literally - the best hands in baseball?

I would have canned Al long ago - drafting, trading (ugh), and free agency fails abounded
but boy has he been doing a good job for the last few years
total reversal of outcomes

now 6/140 23.3 AAV
-
Bowden says 7

Rondon would be a high risk / high reward signing, say 1/24. But Boras looking for multiple years IMO.
then lots of options for 2023: Alexander, Wentz, Faedo, Turnbull, Brieske, Madden

Small perk; they get to keep their third round draft pick.

like everyone else, would have preferred Correa, but not losing another high pick (when they finally seemed to have figured out how to draft well) is a bonus, and if Al's allowance is not all gone, adding Chafin, and maybe a lesser SP and maybe a bat, perhaps that is just as good

Tigers get a lot better; last year defense and hitting from SS was awful.
Correa: 11/352???
Seager: 10/325
Semien: 7/175
Baez: 6/?
Story: ?

the tigers have developed just one SS in the last 2 decades, trading him away (Adames), so they are going to have to pay a premium to get a new SS
if they get one in free agency, that premium will be paid in $$$
if they wait until Feb, during that scramble, that premium will be paid in young talent thru a trade
I am as high as anyone on Kreidler, but you cannot rely on him for SS in 2022
-
god the rangers line up still suxx bad
-
just offer Correa 10/341 and call it a tie
-
Lorenzen to LAA for 1/7M

I bet Baez doesn’t tell himself he’s the fifth-best shortstop on the market. That would strike me as completely out of character for him.
no doubt. that's why you hire professionals who help you make these big decisions
-
i wonder if they would look at Dominic Smith, LH, plays 1B, LF, DH; good 2019-20; if Cano is back, he might be available
-
Canha would have been a good fit; sees 3rd most pitches per at bat; but that price, at that age? yes, pass
-
Baez may realistically realize that he is the 5th best SS out there (Correa-Seagar-Story-Semien-Baez) and maybe he does not want to be under the gun in Feb as there is a mad scramble to find a team.
So can you get him now, for 5/125, or less? Baez carries a different type of risk.

Tender deadline moved up 2 days to avoid lockout, so will get a little more clarity on the roster then; assuming one of Garneau/Greiner will not be tendered, maybe both will not; Boyd is only big decision.
Turnbull, Candy, Fulmer, Cisnero - yes
HCastro, Jimenez, Reyes - sure why not
Hutchinson, Niko, Krol - already gone

Will be very hypocritical if the writers vote in Big Papi, who used, and not the others only because he’s a good guy.
but that's what will happen.

ESPN took a survey of 20 major league executives, as to where each suspected the "hot commodity" shortstops will land. They said:
Javy Baez: Mets 10, Astros 3, Rangers 3, Cubs 2, Mariners 2
Carlos Correa: Tigers 10, Rangers 6, Yankees 3, Astros 1
Corey Seager: Yankees 12, Tigers 4, Rangers 2, Dodgers 2
Marcus Semien: Mariners 8, Tigers 5, Rangers 4, Blue Jays 3
Trevor Story: Rangers 8, Tigers 5, Astros 3, Yankees 2, Mariners 2well if Correa is at SS, Semien is at 2B, Seager at 3b, and Story at DH ... that's OK with me.

schilling is so much better than jack morris.
could have kept both out based on performance, but once Morris is in, Schilling's addition is an easy call
-
Matz? for basically same money as Matz, you could get Gray, who has some upside.
4 more pitchers gone: Giants have resigned Wood, Desclafani and grabbed Cobb from LAA. Aaron Loop got 2/17M from LAA with option.

It would be an even bigger problem in a year or two, because it's unlikely that five good shortstops would be available at the same time again.
exactly; the supply and demand stars have aligned for the Tigers; and 5 good SS are available; ABOSULTELY need to get one or make a trade in the ensuing shuffle
-
Fraizer's dealing with vertigo so career could be over if they cannot solve that.
But if they can, he is certainly worth a look considering current options
