  1. I agree with that. Kings will take Murray or trade the pick. They want/need to win now. Weaver can choose between Ivey and Sharpe. Outside of getting #1 for Smith, this could wind up being the best draft lottery outcome for us as it keeps us away from Chet, Paolo, and (hopefully) Murray while putting us in position to get one of the athletic guards.
  2. Bright side is Chet and Paolo will likely be gone. Sharpe or Ivey will be there. Of course, Weaver might also go Murray. The again, Murray plays Grant’s position so… We should be shopping Grant to the Kings and Blazers, the two teams trying win now. Give me a second pick if we’re going after Murray so we can get one of the guards as well.
  3. Nearly every draft in the last 15 years has at least 1 All-Star in the top 10 somewhere (sorry 2013). My current thinking is that I'd love to have one of Jabari, Ivey, Sharpe, or Mathurin. I want to swing hard because we need a 1b next to Cade and this is probably our last draft for that type of pick (depending upon lotto balls tonight). But, I do wonder if this organization is leaning towards more immediate talent like Paolo (who I don't want) or Murray (safe pick that probably caps as a role player) from what I've been hearing from James Edwards III. Either way, what I want more than anything is a second pick to double our odds at landing a star. We all know the Portland rumors and even Sacramento is trying to build an immediate winner. They both have high picks they may be willing to part with because they can't afford to wait 2-3 years to develop the talent. We can. Of course, these types of trades usually don't happen until draft night, so we'll have to wait and see. I think this offseason defines Weaver and sets the stage for the franchise. We have a lotto pick, we have Grant's contract to trade or extend, and we have a bunch of cap space. He could either put us in a great position for the future with a winning pick and good contracts or pick a bust and lock us into bad contracts that don't age well. It might even define Cade's impression of playing in Detroit over the next couple years and whether or not he sticks past his rookie deal. No pressure.
  4. Dallas just spread them out and targeted Ayton over and over. He couldn't close out fast enough on shooters and when he played up close, Luka just went by him. Same thing they did to Gobert. Same thing Boston did to Lopez. This is how the playoffs have been the past few years and it's the reason you don't pay a Center max money unless it's Embiid or Jokic...and even then you aren't winning a Championship without a perimeter superstar next to them.
  5. 1-6 could go so many ways in this draft. Even after we know our draft position tomorrow, I'm not sure what we'll know.
  6. Even though I think the Boston franchise has had enough titles, I really enjoy watching this team and the way this iteration of the Celtics was built (draft, not super-team), so I have no problem rooting for them. I don't mind the Heat either. Both great defensive teams, so I'm hoping for a another throwback physical series. I was OK with Golden State before KD, and I'm ok with them again now that KD is gone. Although, admittedly I have soured on them a bit after all that garbage they laid on Dillon Brooks while they have the dirtiest player in the NBA (Green) on their roster. So, I'll be rooting for Dallas. Also because Luka is just fun to watch and I love an underdog story. Hoping for a Boston/Dallas finals but I think it's far more likely we'll get a Miami/GS finals.
  7. What a performance. Luka's ability to get where he wants on any defender despite his lack of athleticism is just a thing of beauty. I hope Cade was watching and learning. Also, to all the people hoping we can get Ayton now...no thanks. You don't max Centers in the NBA. Looks who's left in the conference finals. Bam is the only big name Center and he was statistically the most switchable Center in the NBA this season. All the rest are on their couch watching. Drop Center is a regular season role. This is also the core reason I don't want to draft Chet. I'd rather offer McGee a small contract as a backup Center. Spend your money on 1-4, not the 5.
  8. I'll admit that I do too, especially in this weak draft and for this non-athletic team. It's much easier to imagine a higher ceiling on an athletic prospect and this team needs to find a star next to Cade. And obviously, they've got to find a way to inject athleticism into the lineup when Cade, Bey, and Stewart are your starters. The combine (and our lottery position) will help me determine which order I put the three athletic guards in (Ivey, Sharpe, Mathurin), but those guys are currently at the top of my list right after Jabari, even if it means trading out of #2 and letting someone else take the gamble on Chet or Paolo.
  9. So happy the Rivers-Harden sixers are eliminated. Watching Harden flail his hands every time someone breaths on him is so painful. Hoping for a Boston win because I need to see a game 7 in that series. At this point all the teams I despise (Lakers, Nets, Sixers) are gone, so I'm just looking for some more great games.
  10. I’d be happy to get one of the athletic guards next to Cade. If Sharpe looks good in pre-draft then I’m ok with that. I’m still high on Ivey’s fit as well though. Here’s Vecenie covering some of the points I’ve been making… https://youtu.be/RE2_Hkzha0Y
  11. Really not interested in Brunson. Can you imagine a lineup of Cade, Brunson, Bey, Paolo, and Stewart? That will easily be the least athletic lineup in the entire NBA. On top of the lack of athleticism, I've been watching Brunson in the playoffs and he looks more like a sixth man of the year candidate to me. The kind of guy you bring off of your bench, give him the ball, and let him go to work while everyone else stands around watching him on offense, because he doesn't bring much else and isn't an off the ball player. Only 17% of his shots were catch and shoot. 29% of his shots come off of 7+ dribbles and another 34% come off of 3-6 dribbles. He pounds the the ball and creates offense for himself. Great for the Mav's "your turn, my turn" offensive system...and probably something Casey would love since that's his offensive scheme as well (see Toronto), but not what I want to see for this team. On top of that, it seems like they want to be a switch everything defensive team like Boston and Miami. Ok, but you have to have switchable personnel for that scheme to work. We saw how bad that was with a tiny guy like CoJo last year - teams just targeted him every time down the court - and Brunson is 2" shorter. I just don't see how paying him 25M a year is going to help this team be better. If we don't land Jabari, I really hope we wind up with one of the athletic guards (Sharpe, Ivey, Mathurin) so we don't feel compelled to pursue Brunson. Of course, from what JEIII has been saying the organization is really high on Murray, so even if we fall out of the top 3, we may wind up taking Murray over one of those guards anyway.
  12. Our best chance to get a little more value for Grant is Portland. They have a lotto pick in a weak draft, a trade exception, a desperate need to add talent so their star doesn't demand a trade, and all kinds of rumors that Lillard and Grant are tight and that Dame wants Grant in Portland. That team is up against a wall, so they might be willing to part with a bit more than Grant's value to get him.
  13. That Bucks/Celtics series is a lot of fun, but man, they are letting them get physical in that series. Giannis getting away with some Lebron level offensive fouling while Tatum gets absolutely mugged on the other end. Also, that chase down block attempt by Giannis where he wrecked Tatum should've been a Flagrant 2 by the standard set with the Brooks call. Hit a defenseless player from behind and wiped him out under the basket. Instead it's a common foul because you can't eject Giannis and because Tatum didn't land as awkwardly as GP. I love the the physical play and it's a great reminder of the difference between the regular season and the post-season. I just wish it was whistled more consistently across games, across players, and across the entire season.
  14. No kidding. When they interviewed Kerr during the game and he called it "dirty" I was like, "what?". It just looked like an attempted chase down block that failed. He was clearly going for the ball and accidentally caught GP's head because he didn't manage to jump high enough to get the ball. It's a full speed play and guys try to get chase down blocks all the time. GP just landed awkwardly. Clearly a Flagrant 1 because of contact to the head, but I didn't think it was a Flagrant 2 and I thought Draymond's hit to the face followed by a pull down was way worse.
  15. Big men are getting played off the court left and right in the playoffs. I wouldn't count on someone like Bagley who can barely manage average defense on a good day to be effective in the post season. Guys like Bam who are highly switchable (no Center was switched on to a guard more in the NBA...Stewart was 3rd on the list) or someone like Embiid who dominates on the offensive end will always have a spot. But someone like Bagley...nope. You could hope for him to become a 20 minute instant offense guy who gives you more points than he allows, but I'm not sure he has that level of potential. As Del said, use him now as you're getting better and keep searching for a real playoff piece down the line.
  16. Exactly. You're not drafting Smith for athleticism. He won't dribble by anybody or create any offense using his athleticism. You're drafting him for his shot-making - which is elite. Don't get me wrong, I still take him #1 overall, but not because he's an athletic rim runner in any way. On the other hand, if he's gone when its our turn to pick (or if we get the Portland pick) I want one of the athletes (Ivey, Sharpe, or Mathurin). I'm sure Murray will be a fine player, but he's a low ceiling, safe pick. I'd prefer to swing for another star next to Cade, especially if we have 2 picks.
  17. That Memphis/GS series has been crazy good so far.
  18. I just need whoever comes out of that series to be strong enough to beat Philly if they make it through Toronto and Miami.
  19. This got me out of my seat when I saw it. I backed up the DVR to watch it in live speed three times. Pistons need some of this in their lineup. Give me Ivey, Sharpe, or Mathurin please.
  20. Yup. It was fun to watch. However, unlike Drummond, Adams, Gobert, and others who are getting played off the court, Embiid is too dominant on the offensive end to get benched for long stretches (or an entire series like Adams) in the playoffs. This is today's NBA. Much as it annoyed me when Casey did it all year because we don't have the personnel for it (I'm looking at you, Corey Joseph), lineups that can switch everything like Boston are the playoff formula.
  21. Much as I'd love for the Pistons to make a change because I can't stand Casey's X's and O's, lineups, or in-game strategy, he's not going anywhere until he's ready to leave. That will probably happen in the next 2-3 years, with him taking a front office or a scouting role with the Pistons, but for now Weaver and Gores both seem happy with the positive things he brings to the table for this young team (player development and a strong locker room even when you're losing).
  22. I'm not really interested in Paulo or Chet, but if we get one of them, I'll hope for the best. I don't have faith that Chet will be anything more than an oddity who well underperforms his draft position. Paulo, on the other hand, I think will be the type of player that puts up enough regular season numbers against certain types of competition that it takes your franchise too long to realize he's not good enough (Drummond syndrome). Can you imagine a lineup of Cade, Brunson, Bey, Paulo, and Stew? That has to be the least athletic lineup in the entire league. I'd prefer Smith, Ivey, Sharpe, or Mathurin. If we wind up getting Chet or Paulo with our pick, I truly hope we get Portland's pick to add whichever of these athletic guards is available (Smith will be gone by then).
  23. I'm actually glad it was Scottie, because it just makes it more comical and obvious what this was about. There's no real need to try to argue about stats with this result. It's clear this year's award was a Narrative War and the Raptors recent success put Scottie at the top of the narrative.
  24. This. I know we need a big man as well, particularly if we trade Grant, but we've got to find a way to add one of the dynamic guards in this draft to the team (Ivey, Mathurin, Sharpe). My dream draft gets us Jalen Smith with our pick and then Mathurin or Sharpe with Portland's pick.
  25. Definitely the wild card in this draft. What people see as a lack of a true star in this draft, plus Sharpe's draft position, could really make this a wild one. I'm looking forward to some weird surprises in the draft order this summer.
