I listened to the podcast where Windhorst said that he felt Brooklyn would probably match anything up to 100M and that Detroit is a team that could have interest in him. Couple hours later everyone is reporting that "Brooklyn plans to match up to 100M for Cam Johnson." That's what I'm saying. It's all the rumor game where one reporter says something he feels could happen and then everyone reports that like it's a fact directly from the team's war room. That's how you get clicks. And we all eat it up. Just like all the supposed interest we had in Ayton last year - another RFA that we were having these exact discussions about. Can someone give me an example of an RFA that Weaver has gone after in the entire time he's been here. Has there been even one? Maybe this will be the first, but after hearing Troy's comment in the past about dealing with RFAs, I'll believe it when I see it.

I liked Omoruyi's effort as well, but that's an odd thing to do before you even get into Free Agency. Not worried about the 1.9M, but there really aren't many roster spots. Hopefully this signals a trade to move Bogey/Bagley/Killian at some point before the season starts.

I give it a 95% chance he stays in GS. Probably a three year deal to match up with Steph so they can milk some more playoff appearances out of this dynasty before it all goes away. This is all just posturing to make the Warriors offer him a decent contract.

Anything you're seeing right now isn't from the Piston's front office. It's all something one reporter speculated on and then 15 people re-reported calling it a "rumor" or a "inside info". This front office is notoriously quiet when it comes to releasing information. Plus, every agent is using the Pistons cap space to float stuff out there and make it look like their player is wanted. I wouldn't count on the Pistons pursuing Cam unless Monty is pushing for it and they want to appease him. Weaver has made comments in the past about how much he prefers the trade market to the Free Agency market, and even more so with restricted free agents.

Yes. Although I'd be fine with someone more Forward sized (McDaniels, Craig, Strus, Thybulle, Hart, Ingles, Yuta) than Divincenzo who is only 6'4" on a team full of Guards, but I wouldn't complain about it since it just means Killian, Hami, and McGruder have to be out the door. And yes please. Also, can we toss Killian or Bagley in that trade?

Either way, it's bad asset management. The RFA market is a losing game. You either pay way more than value so the other team won't match, or you still pay way more than value and ALSO give up trade assets. And we're talking about an injury prone role player here, not an All-Star or even a borderline All-Star. Go out and sign someone like Barnes to a reasonable contract instead with team option in the last year. He'll give you 90% of what Cam gives you for 60% of the cost, plus a vet presence, and a tradeable contract down the line while you develop the youth. You'll have enough cap for a second signing and you can still use your other assets in a trade to bring in a third player, a future pick, or both.

You can do both. Move him to maximize the value of that asset and bring in vets that can shoot and will also play defense. We've got a list of them above who are free agents and there are more you can find in trades. Sitting on this asset would be a bad move.

That's why I like the idea of Harrison Barnes. Vet who can spread the floor (career 38% from 3) and would be a great rental player while the "chili simmers". You can give him a reasonable contract with a team option for the last year to make it easier to trade if necessary. But I truly believe we have to move Bogie. We were the second worst defense in the league last year, Weaver has spent the off-season talking about defense, and he's drafted for defense as well. The defense doesn't get better with Bogie as your starting Forward. He'd be great for a contender that needs shooting, he's coming off of a career year, and he has a very friendly contract. Move him now while he has high value.

Just like when people wanted Ayton, I hate the idea of going after a restricted free agent for this reason. You have to throw a really overpriced contract at him and then on top of that you're going to lose even more assets because it's going to wind up being a sign and trade. You're going to have to offer him close to 30M. You can't win 17 games and then start spending that much on role players and give up assets on top of it for a trade. I'd rather sign someone that's close to what Cam is and still have my other assets (Bogie + stuff) for another trade. Cam's good, but he's no borderline All-Star and never plays a full season. This isn't Mikal Bridges we're talking about here. If I'm throwing out a 30M bag, I'd rather throw it at Jeremy Grant (but I'm not sure I want that either). If I have to go restricted, I'd probably rather go after Thybulle. He won't cost nearly as much and he shot around 37% from three the last year while being a beast of a defender. Barnes might be a good option to get a vet in the locker room who can spread the floor and start for a bit while Ausar is learning. Bruce Brown can come home. Is Josh Hart out there? He has a player option, right? Max Strus? Jalen McDaniels? Torrey Craig? Joe Ingles? Yuta Watanabe? I honestly think Troy spends the majority of his free agent money in a trade and just signs one small free agent. That seems to be his thing.

This is where I'm at with it. If I could guarantee Hendricks was going to be there, then yeah I'm interested. But I don't walk Walker and a potentially bad pick in a later draft. Also we don't know what "stuff" is. If it's Bagley, then ok, take that contract off my hands. But, it could have been Burks and now it doesn't sound so good.

I like Hendricks a lot, but Ausar has a way higher ceiling (also a lower floor). Weaver said he was going for the home run swing and that's what he did. Day 1 Ausar is Hami with more height, length, IQ, defense, ball-handling, and passing. That's solid already, right? He's also a better 3 point shooter...but that's not saying much since he's at 30% compared to 27%, but there's hope. So, there's your floor. But Weaver compared him to prime Andre Iquodala and that's probably a good comp for his ceiling. That's a lockdown perimeter defender, who can slash, play above the rim, be a playmaker for others, and shoot at a passable enough level to keep defenders honest. Adding prime Iggy to Cade, Ivey, and Duren would be phenomenal if he gets there. The NBA is also moving towards having more and more ball-handlers and playmakers out on the court. Look at teams like Boston, Denver, Miami, and others who roll out lineups with 3 to 5 guys that can make plays with the ball in their hands. That's the biggest knock on Hendricks - he simply doesn't project as that type of player at all. So, while he's a nice roleplayer, he's also the kind of 3 and D guy you can get as a Free Agent or in a trade, whereas you can't get homeruns that way. Weaver is hoping Ausar is a homerun.

Killian will be gone by the start of the season. If not, it's because they couldn't trade him and he costs nothing to keep. Either way, he'll be glued to the bench because there are no minutes left. Let's not forget that Cade didn't play last year. He's going to come back and take 30 minutes at the guard position. Jaden is taking 30 at the other guard position. Alec Burks is going to get his 18 minutes. Sasser is getting the other minutes because he can shoot and defend. Sasser is an upgrade day 1, but Killian was statistically one of the worst rotation players in the entire league last year so a mascot might be an upgrade. The more this draft has settled in, the more I like it. Pistons were 29th in defense last year with a huge gap to even get them to the middle of the pack. That was their biggest need and they went after it with this draft, taking a potentially elite perimeter defender who has a very high ceiling and a backup guard who's an absolute dog on defense. Shooting/spacing is a concern if Ausar is a starter day 1, but they were 21st in three point percentage last year and only 1% away from 14th place. So, they were roughly middle of the pack in 3pt percentage even with Killian out there playing starter minutes and shooting 28% from deep. Think about this: Ausar is already a better shooter from NBA range (30%) than Killian (28%). If all you did was swap their minutes, you'd improve your shooting. That's before we even think about adding Cade back and minutes for Sasser (37% career 3pt shooter, ~45% on catch and shoot looks).
