For those wanting to trade Ivey/Duren.  What are you looking to get in return?  I feel like their value might not be that high right now.

It's not a matter of trading them just for the sake of trading them but more of a recognition that it's hard to find a fit for Ivey here and that Duren is fairly limited in what he can do in todays' game. Also knowing that their value might be at its peak right now if the team continues to lose with these mismatched pieces.

I think it's extremely unlikely that they trade Duren but Ivey is absolutely trade bait. They can't just run it back with these guys and just work around the edges of this roster. They need players that are not only more advanced in their development but also fit better. I don't ever see a core of Cade, Ivey, Ausar and Duren being even a regular playoff team in this league nevermind championship caliber.

  2. Great signing, he's exactly the guy I wanted the Lions to sign for a short term solution. Elite pass blocker. Still need a long term solution but couldn't think of a better short term solution.

If Holmes does nothing else, this free agency period is a success but with all the talent on the receiver and safety market I would like to see one of those positions filled before the draft. Still need a #3 WR and a vet safety so either would suffice.

Your starting Center can't be 4-10 with 2 turnovers and poor defense. He's been averaging 3 turnovers a game lately and doing some serious Drummond stuff with the ball.

Yep, been saying this for a while. Serious Drummond vibes. Duren is stronger than Andre and has much better touch at the free throw line (which is important for a big man) but the low IQ stuff and lazy tendencies, not to mention lack of rim protection give me the Drummond vibes.

If it was up to me, Cade and Ausar are the guys I build around. I wouldn't trade them for an underwhelming return but Ivey and Duren would absolutely be up for auction to bring in more advanced players that fit better.

  4. Cade has progressed nicely offensively this season so don't want to criticize him too hard but that was real braindead of him to not only not take the last shot but to hoist up a 3. It's that type of heroball that I wouldn't expect from him. Of course if Monty even cared one bit about coaching, he would have called a timeout to draw up a play and burn it into their brains that they need to be the ones taking the last shot not Miami. Just more Monty stuff in a long line of errors but I digress.

I don’t think signing DPJ stops them from bringing either Reynolds back or from drafting a WR3.

I think it’s likely that Reynolds is asking for WR2 money and the Lions are offering WR3 money. DPJ got WR4+ money.

For sure, it's a low risk move and signals based on the contract that perhaps they see DPJ as more of a depth guy so we'll see. Holmes loves loading up on offensive weapons so I wonder if he has another trick up the sleeve before the draft, like a CJGJ signing but on offense. Plenty of solid receivers still out there.

  6. Really not a fan of DPJ, still have a hole at receiver. I would have preferred to bring Reynolds back who we know has synergy with Goff. DPJ is younger and fits the physical profile of the type of receiver they need so that's a plus but he was mostly invisible in his time here. I hope Holmes isn't done adding to the receiver room.

Figures that right as we finally get our heads out of our ass as a franchise that the rest of the division would too. The Bears should be pretty good next year. Packers too. I expect the Vikings to struggle a little with their rookie quarterback, but they should still hover around .500, there is talent on that roster.

It's going to be an extremely competitive division next year. No games are easy in the NFL, but it's nice when you can count on two games against a bottom feeder.

I like the competition. The division was a relative cakewalk last season so I knew that wouldn't last. The Lions are the top dog now and the team that's being hunted so it was always going to get tougher going forward, should make for some fun division games.

This is probably my favorite move so far. He's basically a poor man's version of Snacks Harrison. He's a man eater who can draw double teams which can free up McNeil for the pass rush. He'll likely be subbed on 3rd and passing downs. Definite improvement over Benito Jones and Buggs.

Better than Snacks. Higher QB pressure rate.

  9.

Reader is a big add literally and figuratively. If you look at his sack numbers you'd think "what's the big deal" but his pressure rate is on the high end for DTs and he frees up other guys with his ability to take on double teams, not to mention fortifying the run defense even further. Health is a concern but if healthy, he's a game changer for this defense. Contract is great, to state the obvious.

Now, I'd like to see a receiver add (I still think Reynolds re-signs) and a guard although that'll likely be a draft add.

I think I would counter that I don't think they've ever really given him a jump ball merchant to use. Chark is as close as they got, and he averaged about five targets a game when he actually played.

That's fair but Goff did miss Chark on a lot of jump ball opportunities to my recollection.

The NFLPA does warn their players about teams. If the Lions keep not spending, and then ask the players they do sign to pay cuts a year later while they are flush with cap space, the NFLPA will start warning players about the Lions like they used to do about the Bengals. It's weird, the Lions were criticized for recouping bonuses from Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson that were unearned but feel it's ok to constantly ask their players to take pay cuts.

You're reading WAY too much into this.

Mike Williams was cut. If he can’t get a long-term deal somewhere, seems like a one-year Holmes classic candidate.

I don't think he fits the Lions offense and Goff in particular. Mike Williams is a jump ball merchant and that's just not Goff's strength. I could see them more in on somebody like Renfrow than Mike Williams.

This one stings, not going to lie. I knew deep down in my Honolulu blue heart we wouldn't land an A-tier, marquee free agent. But man, I really wanted us to be in on Hunter and I had some small but fading sense of hope that we would land a dynamic pass rusher like Hunter. Lining up a guy with 16 sacks across Aiden sure would have been nice. Just continue to trust the Brad Holmes plan!

I fully expected it. Holmes is not going to sign top of the market free agents to multi-year deals, get used to it. It's worked so far.

  14. The Lions might not have a true #1 corner but they have lots of depth now. Still need a long term solution so I think it should still be near the top of the needs list at the draft. Now I'd like to see them sign an edge or Reader as has been rumored that they were in on him. Need a #3 WR too and a LG but that will likely be saved for the draft.

The Den, I take it, spend way WAY too much time there, lol.

Just a loud couple of posters there, the usual suspects

Yep. I actually love that place but there are some real pessimistic posters that are very loud with their disapprovals.

Why do you keep comparing him to Sutton? Sutton isn't going anywhere. He's replacing Jerry Jacobs and Kindle Vildor. He is an upgrade over those two.

Exactly right, he's replacing the fringe guys. He might not be a true 1 but they have two quality corners now instead of one quality guy and a replacement level guy. Moseley is the insurance, when he's ready to play.

Personally, I would have preferred signing a guy like Fuller who is probably on Davis's level and not giving up the draft compensation but maybe that wasn't in the cards for Holmes.

That's more than I was expecting, was hoping/thinking it was basically a salary dump by TB and we were going to get him for like a 5th.

It essentially amounted to about a 4th with the two 6ths in return. Not so bad IMO, this is more of a win now mode and they still have 3 picks in the first 3 rounds.

Also, it was the Lions 3rd not the Vikings one so a lot closer to a 4th.

Same here. Still lots of big names out there, that I don't think Holmes will sign, but they're out there still.

It does seem like if he does go big, it'll be at CB and the market is still flush with them.

Channeled my inner Nostradamus with this one. Carlton Davis was really good a few years ago, not sure how you fared last year but this is Brad's big swing.

I haven't seen any player sign yet that I would say I really wish the Lions signed that player to that contract.

also remember that the cap is going up so salaries go up too.  its the cap percentage to watch.

Yep, I've been saying this for a while. I think the Lions did well with Glasgow taking this into consideration, I thought he'd get something like a 3 year $30m deal on the open market.

  21. It's funny seeing the meltdown on this other board that I frequent. "Holmes is doing nothing" "Holmes doesn't care to address any needs" etc.

First of all, besides the fact that it's asinine to criticize Holmes like 5 hours into the offseason, do these people know Brad Holmes? He's not going to overpay in the first wave of free agency. Holmes can be unpredictable in the draft but he's predictable in free agency in now his 4th go at it. He's not going to overspend for the A level free agents so I guess people will continue to get mad hoping for the splashy moves.
