  1. At first I was like, "Another CB?" but it makes a lot of sense when you consider that Davis only has 1 year left plus Rakestraw was likely BPA at 61 and Holmes just takes guys who are good football players regardless of need. I think this signals that Davis is a 1 year rental, would be hard for the Lions to afford him anyway. Not a big fan of giving up a 3rd for a rental but, in a pass happy league, their secondary is loaded now and has a very bright future so hard to complain about that.

So where does this leave us for the second round? Interior OL? WR?

    BPA Baby

I would like to get an O-Lineman though. I'm bummed that Legette got taken but it was never realistic for him drop to 61. Still, I'm on such a high with the Arnold pick that everything else is gravy from here on out.

If they trade up, I bet it's for Arnold if they trade up into the mid teens (listen to that kid speak, if he doesn't embody Brad/Dan culture I don't know who does) or DeJean if they're trading 5-6 spots up.

Told you guys although I thought an Arnold trade up would be up to the mid teens and would cost the 2nd at minimum. What transpired was absolute genius work by Holmes. I was at this draft party screaming out for them to trade up for Arnold and lo and behold it happened, I'm stoked to say the least. This guy screams Detroit Lion.

People will hate this. But Stewart should have started last year.

After the trades it should have been

    Cade

    Ivey

    Fontecchio

    Thompson

    Stewart

They aren't benching Duren. He's one of their core players, they're going to give him opportunity to succeed. I'm not a big fan of his but that's what they should do if they're intent on developing or trading him for that matter. Him coming off the bench would be detrimental to both options.

As much as I'd love to get Mitchell, I don't want to see us move up for him if we can get a player like Wiggins at #29. If somehow we only had to move up 2-3-4 spots I'd consider that move for sure. But if we have to try and move up 10-12 spots or so, then I'm out on that.

If they trade up, I bet it's for Arnold if they trade up into the mid teens (listen to that kid speak, if he doesn't embody Brad/Dan culture I don't know who does) or DeJean if they're trading 5-6 spots up.

Earlier in this thread I did a rough projection of what I thought St. Brown might get paid. I said 4 year/$92 million with $61 million guaranteed. I had used Deebo Samuel's contract as a comparison for projecting what St. Brown might get. Whoooooo boooooy was I off on my projection. St. Brown certainly got paid today. Being honest, he deserves every cent of what he got as he's been the MVP of this offense the past couple of season. While it is a big deal, that takes up a good chunk of cap space, he is one of those players that deserve that type of big deal.

I think they are going to look for roster savings elsewhere on the roster to compensate for this deal and the future, pending, larger contract for Goff. If the a tackle prospect they like falls to them at 29, I could see them drafting Taylor Decker's replacement so they can have a future RT under team control and not have to pay Decker another big contract.

That's a completely unrealistic expectation. Keep in mind when looking at previous contracts like Samuel, Hill, Brown etc., those were all during lower cap times and those guys are quite a bit older than Amon-Ra. The Lions are getting him right locked up right at the beginning of his prime while those are getting paid at the back end of their prime.

I could be wrong, but one minor complaint is that I think BH has been slow playing these extensions for some reason.

months ago he could have "set the WR market" at a lower number than 30M. same is true for Goff, who is going to get 50M per.

I disagree, who signed in the offseason that reset the market? Davonta Smith? Amon-Ra was getting $28m+ no matter what.

I don't get RB being low value. Gibbs touched the ball 234 times which was 3rd behind Montgomery who had 235 touches and Goff. Even if he doesn't sign a second contract, a lot of first round picks don't.

I'll also argue TE is a good value position. Laporta had 86 catches and almost 900 yards. If he puts up that production as a WR, he gets paid double. Kelce puts up wide receiver numbers and gets paid half what a receiver would make.

I get it. Most RBs don't get a 2nd contract with their initial team and most RBS aren't the focal points of the offense, same with TE. It takes a special RB and TE to be worth being taken that high, like Gibbs and LaPorta even though LaPorta wasn't a high pick but moreso that in future years when teams are contemplating taking Tight Ends with a high 1st, the sentiment will be "They better be the next LaPorta to be worth it".

Jahmyr Gibbs was a player I actually wanted in last years draft. I was just really hoping we could get him later in the first round or second round. In hindsight, he was never last until the second round. I went back and reread my initial reaction of the Lions taking Gibbs from last year's draft thread. I would just like to apologize to Lions GM Brad Holmes. My initial reaction to taking a RB that high in the first was that it was an SOL move. It was indeed NOT an SOL move and it ended up working out very well for the Lions. Brad Holmes, I'm sorry. Job well done on scouting and picking Gibbs.

Anybody who is being honest will admit that they were miffed by the Gibbs pick for the most part. I'm sure there were a few that were onboard with the pick at the time but most of us were baffled at him being picked that high, same with Campbell. TBH, it seemed like most weren't happy with the LaPorta pick either although I liked him. Branch was the one pick that was universally liked at the time.

Long story short.... Trust In Brad Holmes and not us armchair scouts.

I'd be pretty meh about any of the IOLmen. I trust Holmes completely, so I wouldn't be upset, but I just don't see any of the Day 1 guards or centers (JPJ, Fautanu, Fuaga) being head and shoulders above the Day 2 guards and centers (Zinter, Barton, Frazier, Beebe, Robinson, etc.).

Barton is almost universally being mocked in the 1st round but... you never know. I'd be all in on him if he dropped to 29. Same with Newton, don't see him dropping to 29 but if he did you go snatch him up needs be damned.

Stafford wasn't completely devoid of talent. He had Calvine Johnson and Golden Tate.

Yeah, the argument that he played with trash his entire time as a Lion is bogus, I never understood it. Granted, Goff currently has a better supporting cast than Stafford ever did offensively from players to coaches but Stafford has one of the best receivers of all time to throw to, Tate and a defense that was borderline top 10 a few years. Not blaming Stafford for the zero playoff wins but it's not like he didn't play on teams that weren't capable of making a playoff run.

In terms of top 3 Lions of all time, I'd say that Barry and Calvin have to be a top 3 then it could be a whole bunch of guys that I never saw play. Layne, Barney, Karras, Sims maybe?

Sure looks like it, which automatically makes this jersey upgrade a win.

I agree but considering that his daughter is the current owner, it's a bit odd that they'd remove his initials from the jersey.

I think they stay at 29 and take Kool-Aid McKinstry.    They play a ton of man coverage and he’s the best man corner in the draft.  They have also shown to really like drafting players from Alabama.    It almost seems too obvious which is why it will probably end up being one of the IOL.

Apparently there's issues with his work ethic and that he's not a willing tackler. If true and it's a big IF because draft rumors are usually grains of salt, there's zero chance that he's on the Lions board at all. Holmes is unpredictable in terms of his draft board vs. the consensus and trade ups/downs but in terms of the type of player he likes, he's very predictable. If the player doesn't love and breathe football and doesn't have the necessary grit, he will not be taken by the Detroit Lions.

Going to be an interesting season in Atlanta.

They need a complete reset moreso than any other NBA franchise right now even the Pistons simply because the Pistons at least have some growth potential with the young guys, the Hawks maxed out a few years ago and are now stuck in no mans' land. Trae Young is not a winning player, get what you can for him and move on.

Guess I never knew what their contracts were like.

I didn't realize that they were paid that little in the WNBA, this is a #1 pick salary. Hell, that's in the range of what I make. No wonder these ladies are staying in college nowadays, NIL is surely more fruitful than this. Regardless, Clark is going to clean up with endorsements but, still, that's a shockingly low salary.

If I had to put money on it...

    Cooper DeJean in the 1st.

    Xavier Legette in the 2nd.

    Chris Braswell in the 3rd.

After that... I'll leave it up to Holmes to find 5th/6th/7th rounders that he likes.

    😉

Although with one of those I'd like a kicker. I like Josh Karty the most with a huge leg, 56 yards his longest this past year, 4-7 from beyond 50 and 7-7 in the 40-49 range.

    But just guessin'...

It's extremely unlikely that DeJean is there at 29 and that Legette will be there at 61. I'd have no issue taking Legette at 29 tbh.

Or it could go like it did with the Wings when Ilitch brought back Yzerman. There was a show of solidarity with Holland but Kenny pretty immediately made his own exit. The difference being that Holland still had enough credibility in the league to land another gig. Does Weaver?

As an Edmonton Oilers and Pistons fan who isn't the biggest Holland fan although he has done some real good in Edmonton, Holland had an infinite amount of credibility compared to Weaver. Putting aside his accomplishments in the first half of his Wings tenure in particular, Holland was also one of the most respected GMs in the league and was massively connected throughout NHL circles. Weaver will be lucky to find another NBA job at least as head GM, he might land an assistant job perhaps back with Presti in OKC.

JEIII with an article talking about 5 guys to watch for the president job. Pretty uninspiring.

John Horst - current Milwaukee GM.

John Hammond - We all know him.

Neil Olshey - Decent but had some accusations in Portland that weren't great. Not real sure how all that ended up.

Bryson Graham - Pelicans assistant GM. He said he is the young up and comer.

The last one, I kid you not, Dwayne Casey.

I don't know much about the last 2 names, meh on Horst and Hammond but for the hilarity of it, I'd love it if Gores hired Casey as PoBO just so I can manically laugh like Walter White in his crawl space (for those who know the Breaking Bad reference) and to see the fallout from fans and media to that decision. Only Gores hiring himself or Arn Tellem as President would be funnier/sadder?

I'd really like one of those top three edge rushers (Dallas Turner, Jared Verse, or Laiatu Latu (if he passes their med evals)), but I don't think either of the first two within reasonable striking distance for a trade up, and I tend to think that Latu will either not be there (if he's passing many physicals) or will have been medically red flagged (if he's not passing many physicals). Outside those top three there is a pretty stark decline.

Otherwise, I'm hoping one of Quinyon Mitchell, Nate Wiggins, or Cooper DeJean falls enough to move up for, or outright falls to us if we are real lucky. I don't like Kool-Aid, but I think it's mostly because I think his name is stupid and that it's the most popular pick by all the mockers. I also saw Charlie Campbell's scouting report said that he had "poor work ethic" which would probably cross him off entirely if BH/DC heard the same thing.

I would not be opposed to a guy like Brian Thomas Jr. in the 1st, or Keon Coleman, Troy Franklin, or Ja'Lynn Polk in the 2nd.

I'm not going to doubt Holmes if he selects an IOLman at #29, but I'm not a huge fan unless you see a perennial Pro Bowl caliber player for the taking. Guys like Graham Glasgow, Jonah Jackson, and Joe Thuney were all 3rd round guys. There are usually high-caliber starting guards available in the late 2nd and 3rd rounds, which you can't always say about corner and edge.

That all said, my ideal right now is probably:

    1) Quinyon Mitchell, CB, Toledo

    2) Keon Coleman, WR, Florida State

    3) Zak Zinter, OG, Michigan

    5) Gabriel Murphy, EDGE, UCLA; Grayson Murphy, EDGE, UCLA; Marshawn Kneeland, EDGE, Western Michigan; or Javon Solomon, EDGE, Troy

6+) can we please get a real kicker??

Coleman doesn't pass the turd test so I highly doubt he's on the Brad/Dan radar.

I don't see any of those pass rushers getting out of the teens even (although who knows). Darius Robinson seems like a popular pick for the Lions at 29, I'm a bit skeptical of him though. Not a great sample size of production, same with Chop Robinson.

I agree on guard/center. I know Frank was taken late 1st but I prefer to get those guys in the middle rounds, I want more of a playmaker at 29 whether it's receiver, corner or EDGE.

    graham barton.  build the lines.

I like him too or Powers-Johnson as well because in addition to being a good player, a guy like "Powers" is destined to be a great offensive lineman.

I just really want a dynamic playmaker on either side of the ball and Legette is a guy I've always really liked and felt he's been undervalued because he's relatively unproven but....if they want to strengthen the offensive line for the next 10 years I'm good with that.
