On a team with designs on a pennant, no and no. On a team struggling to put a decent product on a field while they remake the organization from top to bottom, sure, why not. I'll be fascinated to see where these guys fit into the plan for this team. The one thing Carpenter has going for him is a good arm for right field. Tork has a wet noodle for his arm which, although not as important for a first baseman, does not pair up well with his near-league-worst range. First base defense does not live on scoops alone.

the youngest coach in d-i sports (UNC Athletics) As the college field hockey season kicks into gear, I'd like to call your attention to a fascinating story out of Chapel Hill. Last year, Erin Matson led UNC to a national championship. This year, at just 23 years old, she's the head coach. How we got here: Matson is one of the best players in the history of the sport. "The Michael Jordan of field hockey," her former coach told The Athletic ($). At 16, the Pennsylvania native became the youngest player to ever make the US national team. At UNC, she led the Tar Heels to four national titles and was named national player of the year three times. Now, she's the youngest coach in D-I sports and is leading many of her former teammates, some of whom were her roommates not too long ago. She's replacing a legend in Karen Shelton, who coached UNC for 42 years and won nine national championships. Shelton intentionally put off retirement until Matson's playing career was over. Then, she gave her the keys. Coming up: No. 2 UNC hosts No. 4 Louisville on Friday in their ACC opener.

I think it’s more like, they know there’s no fire. Or at least the leaders do, because there are a lot of C-minus and D-plus students in Congress now who are deep in the muck.

You misspelled KKKrossFit. 😉

Well, if there’s no law against it … 🙄

Tigers Beat Writers Lionizing Sub-Replacement Level Ex-Tigers
chasfh replied to Edman85's topic in Detroit Tigers
Tell you what though: the Reds have gotten way more out of Buck Farmer than the Tigers ever did. So, good for them, I guess. -
I think this is right. Malloy and Keith have serious defensive issues, and I’m pretty sure this FO is not going to punt on defense in order to get bats into the lineup. I think I remember someone suggesting we make Malloy basically a permanent DH. Setting aside the idea that having a permanent DH removes the flexibility of putting guys there who need a day off from the field but still need to keep their batting eye fresh—which was the problem with having Miggy on this team—I believe that if the 23-year-old hitting prospect you have is not able play any one position well enough at the big league level to put him there regularly, it’s time to figure out how to trade him to a team that actually doesn’t care about that, in exchange for someone more useful to you. Who knows, maybe that’s what the Braves were doing when they were willing to part with Malloy for Joe Jimenez.

Anybody Want Some Lithium (& other assorted items)?

The only hotel charging station I’ve seen was at a downtown Green Bay hotel maybe a year or so ago, there were three units, only one was not Tesla-oriented, and it was out of order. Also, downtown Savannah, GA has chargers placed along downtown streets at a few parking spaces. Great idea, especially if you live there, but expensive if you are traveling through in a full EV, and for me driving a hybrid across the country on 95% gas, not nearly as useful. -

I picked 500+ because that’s the approximate range of most full gas car tanks today. But hey, 720 works for me, too! 👍🏼 I wouldn’t mind the idea of EV cars having a 50-or-so-mile second battery as a backup to get you to the next charging station, with a nag to keep you from relying on it too much, but just thinking it through for half a minute, I can see how that might be technologically challenging to do. Just a pie in the sky idea, nothing more. -

I don’t think even a Bernie Sanders Congress would be able to snap their fingers and outlaw gas cars, and probably wouldn’t even want to in the interest of the people. But I could see a gradual process leading to an EV-dominant future neither you nor I will live to see. The cap and trade thing might be a bit complicated to implement on a peer to peer basis, but a market exchange system managed by friendly AI might be workable for that kind of thing in the next couple decades. -
You articulated exactly and succinctly my impression of this.

Yeah, well, “waste” is a relative term in that case … 😉

I just don’t see EV having any chance of overtaking gas cars until (a) we can get 500+ miles on a charge; (b) EV recharging stations are at least close to being as plentiful as gas stations, and preferably more; and (c) we can recharge from zero to full in no more than 15 minutes. -

That’s probably most baseball players. -
As do we all.

Pretty much what I was going to say. It doesn't matter if an investigation completely exonerates Tucker, he is through at this school, nd he's probably going to get mighty paid on the way out.

“It sucks. That’s why everyone should carry a gun.”

If we go outside, I'm thinking probably, yes. But I'm limited based on what I believe might be important to Harris right now, which I have be assuming is to continue to develop the guys at the top of our system to hone in on those worth keeping and those he might perhaps trade. But he might also do something we don't expect, like, I don't know, some "blockbuster" in which he deals two or more of your guys and others for top major league pitching now. But I think I'd be surprised to see that because we are still a chronically under-.500 team. If we were missing the playoffs by just a couple games, I could see that kind of trade as more likely. But since we're out of it by double digit games, I'd probably be surprised by it.

One way or another, we will have a good idea of what the Tigers think of Eduardo Rodriguez well before spring training starts.

There's no chance Armenia is working with US on this to gather intelligence and pass it on to Russia, right?

I think he was a weasel in that moment for what he did. I still think that. I don't think that makes him a bad person overall, because I know him only from his behaviors as reported by the media so I don't know him as a person.
-
Who said he was a bad person? Aren't we talking about difficult people? You are right that he has the right to reject a done deal at the last second—there's no law that says he must accept it, just as there is no law that organizations must ignore his doing so, or ignore his other behaviors, when considering whether to commit multiple years and nine figures to him.
