Speaking of late season doubleheaders, I saw that the Braves and Nationals are playing two today, and I immediately thought, what a huge bummer it must be for players on two teams that are already eliminated from contention to have to play two meaningless games in one day at the end of the season. But then I saw the standings and realized that the 67-83 Braves are still technically in contention for a wild card spot.

If we lose two or all of three to the Guardians—at home—then yeah, I'll be nervous. When the Tigers were still swooning a couple of months or so ago, A.J. Pierzynski said in his podcast that they had gotten off to such a big lead in such a competitive division they were playing bored, or something along those lines. I remember thinking at the time, OK, Pierzynski was inside the game, there might be something to that. Well, there's zero reason to play bored now. We have to play as though our season is on the line, which, to some degree, it is. We have to come out this series on fire, and we have to lose only if the Guardians outplay us in well-played games. We have Mize, Flaherty and Skubal all starting, no pitching chaos this series. Sloppiness might still be overcome, but it cannot be excused. This is where we find out who these guys really are, and as importantly, what kind of coaching staff we really have.

One of my favorite height exaggerations is Jose Altuve being listed at 5' 6", as if that makes him looks macho in a way 5' 3" doesn't. 😉

After the 35-5 start, the 1984 team went 22-23. Then they went 11-1. Then they followed that up by going 20-21. So, two different stretches lasting more than 40 games of the most magic team of all our lifetimes playing sub-.500 ball. Retail coffee prices in the United States in August jumped nearly 21% compared to the same month last year — the largest annual jump since October 1997, according to the latest Consumer Price Index, released Thursday. On a monthly basis, coffee prices rose 4%, the most in 14 years. Coffee drinkers have President Donald Trump’s tariffs to blame, in part. The United States is largest importer of coffee in the world and it relies on foreign countries for the beans, given there are very few places it can grow domestically. Nearly all – 99% – of coffee consumed in the United States is imported, according to the National Coffee Association. One of the most heavily-tariffed countries is Brazil, which is the United States’ top source for coffee, according to US Department of Agriculture data. Brazilian imports face 50% tariffs, among the highest that the US levies on any country’s goods, because of Trump’s anger over the trial and recent conviction of former President Jair Bolsonaro, a Trump ally. Diane Swonk, chief economist at KPMG, predicts coffee prices “will easily exceed the record as the full effects of the 50% tariffs levied on Brazil last month work their way onto store shelves.” Other coffee bean-growing countries are also being slammed with tariffs. Colombia, the second-biggest exporter based on net weight, has a 10% tariff, and Vietnam, the third-biggest, has a 20% tariff.

They may be stupid and ignorant about a lot of things, but when it comes to exercising cruelty, those ICErs are as smart and knowledgeable and resourceful about how to do so as required by the job.

They still hate the Lions enough in Chicago that when it comes to a Lions game vs, say, a Cowboys or 49ers or Giants game, the local Fox affiliate will pass over the Lions to show one of those other teams.
