If you knew Demeter was a greek goddess when you were a kid, you were raised under more elevated circumstances than myself. I’m envious.

When I wanted to find a picture suitable for the above post I typed “moron wearing Detroit Tiger cap“ into Google and aside from this photo, three photos of Brad Ausmus showed up among the first dozen photos, and that struck me as unfair. There was also a photo of Ian Kinsler right up near the top and also a photo of Smokes. Google is really cruel.

On December 5, 1963 the Tigers traded future Hall of Famer Jim Bunning, along with infielder Gus Triandos, to the Phillies in exchange for infielder Don Demeter and right-hander Jack Hamilton. Bunning had been with the Tigers for nine years, posting a 118-87 record with a 3.45 ERA. At least we’ve avoided the tedium of both teams no hitting each other, which in the case of each would be due not to great pitching, but to bad hitting. They’re like two hobos fighting in the alley for the driest place next to the dumpster in which to pass out.

It was so strange to watch the Yankees Braves game on Apple TV last night. Everybody looked like they knew how to hit a baseball. You could read it in their body language when they walk to the plate like they had contact harbored in their bodies, waiting to be expressed through the barrel of the bat. I sometimes think our guys are afraid of the ball. They look tentative, not confident. Sometimes confidence is mere performativity, an act. But in the other game I watched last night, these guys all seemed to know what they were doing, and a lot of times our guys don’t.
