With the numbers we know, the Tigers are a bit over slot right now with Adams's number in.  (Yes, by the way, Adams's is correct grammar.) They still have about $353K (net) they can go over slot if they sign everybody in the Top 10 before getting more than a financial penalty.

You only get 2 points for the correct grammar, since I already knew it was correct grammar.

  • "Adams's" is indeed the standard possessive form in most style guides (Chicago, APA, MLA). AP Style also now generally recommends adding 's to singular proper nouns ending in s, so Adams's is correct.
  • "with Adams's number in""with Adams's number included" is a little more natural.
  • "everybody""everyone" is slightly more formal, though either is fine.
  • "before getting more than a financial penalty" was the one awkward phrase. "without incurring anything more than a financial penalty" expresses the idea more clearly.

Does anyone know:

If they sign one of their 11-20 picks for $50K, just for example... Does that mean they can sign another guy for $250K?

Can they do the same thing with the later rounders as they did with 1-10?

IE: If they think they have a shot at Dunwoody or Byers...

Nope, its anything below 150K doesn't count towards the cap but it doesn't add up like 1-10.

So BA shows that we signed Michael Lane for $50K and Edwin Alicea for $197.5K...

That ONLY counts as $47.5K signed over slot? The $100K saved on Lane does NOT count?

(just checking...)

And anything over $150k, that minus $150k is what counts. So Adams ($1M) counts $850k against the limit. If LeBlanc doesn't sign, the pool amount alotted to his pick evaporates. Just in case people didn't know that.

Additional Info:

Just in case anyone is also following: Tigers signed an undrafted Catcher out of USF (South Florida) Lance Trippel, 6'2" 200 RH'er... hit .304/ .394/ .433 last year at USF.

Can never have enough bullpen catchers.

I was told there wouldn’t any math required in this thread.

Having said that, can we still afford to sign everyone else?

By far, my least favorite SNL line that may have contributed to the mathphobia bringing our society to its knees.

But to the point, the last 15 drafts have been math problems. Ever since the bonus pool became a thing, that is what the draft is now.

What is your favorite SNL line that may have contributed to the mathphobia bringing our society to its knees?

And 3 of the 4 remaining pitchers from the later rounds are HS'ers...

Which could possibly make it even MORE interesting...

Can someone clarify what or who specifically we are tracking here? Was there someone picked that was expected to be a tough sign? It appears they have more than full slot available to sign the 2nd rounder.

What is the “interesting” aspect happening here?

I don't know what is interesting. They can still pay LeBlanc about $1.6M without going 5% over. If they get him for slot, they only have a shade over 80k. If they don't sign him, they have $6,675 extra they can spend. Any savings on him can go to one of the high school pitchers who may not be signable.

They will sign the second rounder. The question is if he will sign enough below slot to enable them to sign one of the 3 high school pitchers they drafted in the latter rounds.

Are any of these high school pitchers particularly interesting? What is the hope here? Sign Leblanc for like 100k below slot or whatever and offer 300k to each of them and say first one to take it gets it?

Are each of these kids considered tough signings enough that they don’t expect to get any of them for 150k?

Anyway, thanks for the info. Seems like relatively small stakes for these late rounders but it will be nice if they get one of them
