Maybe... Lord Stanley is putting in such hard work though... I say let him finish the job! With the Senators’ win today over Carolina, the Wings could be eliminated as soon as Thursday night. They’re 2 pts back of Ottawa with 5 to play for each and with Ottawa owning the tiebreaker. The Wings need to play 3 points better than Ottawa the rest of the way …and even if they do they also have to look at the Metro teams. The Wings are on the brink. Quote
lordstanley Posted Monday at 04:06 PM Author Posted Monday at 04:06 PM 4 NHL games tonight. Three are West vs. West matchups. The other is between two Atlantic teams, Buffalo and Tampa, that the Wings mathematically can't catch. Not one of the four NHL games tonight has playoff implications for the Wings. Unless we are tracking potential 1st round opponents for the Wings, ha! Quote
lordstanley Posted Tuesday at 04:10 PM Author Posted Tuesday at 04:10 PM (edited) Tonight is the first time when I think that a Wings' victory - few as far between as they've been - wouldn't be a satisfactory result. The Wings need help, having to gain 3 points on Ottawa in their last 5 games. So one of the best chances of doing so is Ottawa losing to a Tampa team that is in a 3-way race for 1st place. A Wings' victory tonight over the the Jackets would put them ahead of Columbus and NYI and then the Wings have a chance to get even with Philly at LCA on Thursday, so Ottawa is the concern now. No expectations whatsoever though. Edited Tuesday at 04:10 PM by lordstanley Quote
Hongbit Posted Tuesday at 09:02 PM Posted Tuesday at 09:02 PM (edited) They also need to be regulation wins. They can’t afford to give a free point to either CBJ or Philly Edited Tuesday at 09:08 PM by Hongbit 1 Quote
lordstanley Posted Wednesday at 04:48 AM Author Posted Wednesday at 04:48 AM Wings’ tragic number is 5. Any combination of Ottawa points and Detroit dropped points adding up to 5 eliminates the Wings. 4 games left for each. So for example, even if the Wings were to win their final four games (ha!) so 0 dropped points, Ottawa going 2-1-1 for 5 points would eliminate the Wings. Quote
lordstanley Posted 11 hours ago Author Posted 11 hours ago Good chance the Wings won't mathematically survive past this weekend, perhaps not even past today. The Wings have the 9th best record in the East but passing 8th Philadelphia doesn't get them in. Because they need to finish in the Atlantic's top 5, passing either Boston or Ottawa. The Wings' tragic number with Boston is 2 points, with each team having 3 games left to play. So even if the Wings were to win out to get to 97 points, the Bruins' 96 points currently means they'd just need 2 points to reach 98 and eliminate the Wings. The Wings will win the tiebreaker with Boston if they both finish at 97, provided at least one of the Wings' wins in their 3-0 finish is in regulation. Boston's early game today hosting Tampa should be over by the time the Wings take the ice at 5pm hosting New Jersey, so if Boston beats the Bolts they'll already be out of the picture for the Wings. After today, Boston finishes at Columbus on Sunday and hosting New Jersey Tuesday. The Wings' tragic number with Ottawa is 3 points, with each team having 3 games left to play. So even if the Wings were to win out to get to 97 points, the Sens' 96 points currently means they'd just need 3 points to reach 97 and eliminate the Wings. The Sens will win any tiebreaker over Detroit. Ottawa's early game today at NYI should be over by the time the Wings take the ice at 5pm hosting New Jersey, so if Ottawa wins today in regulation the Wings would be eliminated with a loss. After today, Ottawa finishes at New Jersey on Sunday and hosting Toronto on Wednesday. The only way the Wings are still alive going into Game 81 in Tampa on Monday is if the Wings beat New Jersey today and either Boston picks up no more than 1 point in its 2 games this weekend or Ottawa picks up no more than 2 points in its 2 games this weekend. 1984Echoes Posted 3 hours ago Posted 3 hours ago So the Red Wings have to win this and the next two games... one of them in regulation. And Ottawa cannot get one single point in their last two. Very, very, very, very doubtful. Ottawa's next point puts the nail in the coffin (or we get 1 point or less today...). Quote

Ottawa is now ahead of Boston on the regulation wins tiebreaker. If Boston wins one of its final two games the Wings can’t catch them. If the Bruins only pick up 1 point total in their final 2 games, the Wings would pass the Bruins by going 3-0 as long as least one Wings win is in regulation. 1 Quote

GalagaGuy Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago Wings are tied for the 12th most points in the league and would have a playoff spot clinched if they were in the Western Conference. Sucks that they missed it again, but things ain't as bad as they seem. Quote
