  1. I'm about to take up the game after 30 plus years. I only dabbed with it then. Picked up a set of "Senior" clubs. Just waiting until the "Feels like" temps drop below 105 before hitting the driving range.
  2. I read a bit of what Vance was referring to was those who immigrated from what was considered Appalachian regions to areas outside the region for work. Much like the migration to Detroit when Henry Ford started mass manufacturing the automobile. In Western Pa, it was the steel mills up until the mid 60s or so ( whenever US Steel started moving employees to Gary, Ind.). They still brought their Appalachian beliefs with them. It's more about attitude than location.
  3. Some good points....thread..
  4. My problem with RW Christians is they want everyone to follow "RW Christian" beliefs. Falwell, Robertson, the slew of TV Evangelists, etc. I grew up as a "Back Pew" Presbyterian, spent time in the Church of the Brethren, dipped my toes in the pool of a MEGA Church. Too much politics inside the church, and too much pressure to get those outside the church to follow their believes. When "ministers' like Robertson and Falwell started putting politics ahead of their faith, IMO, that's where they lose me What happened to "Give to Caesar" and "When you pray, go into your inner room, shut the door and pray to your father in private"?
  5. The one thing that bothered me about the book was near the beginning. He talked about working in a machine shop or someplace similar where they hired a guy who barely worked (there may have been dugs involved as well). Basically there are people like that everywhere. Now he's ranting about Latinos taking white people's jobs. If the white guy didn't want to work and the brown guy does, how is that the current president's or problem.
  6. And some of us thought middle aged women doing the Macarena was stupid looking way back in ‘96 edited to get correct year. I know it was Chicago and Clinton
  7. Six days since the shooting and still no medical or mental update on the former president's condition. We've never had a true update on his medical status other than the "he's the healthiest human alive from Dr Ronnie Feelgood.
  8. Also Newhart and Don Rickles were best friends. Totally different comic styles. Two of the best
  9. His fellow republicans tolerate him. Trump loves him. To republicans, whatever Donald wants.... In other words see MTG
  10. He's a Republican from Missouri. The job is his until he decides to run for Governor, or President. Ive seen him, he has a Boebert, MTG feel to me. All hat, no horse
  11. Hawley was elected in 2019. He's from Missouri, a ruby red state. He's finishing up his first term.
  12. Who runs like a little girl. Go back and take a look at j H during the 1/6/21 insurrection attempt
  13. I thought Cox was one of the "saner" Republicans. My wife had a chance to interact with him recently on a project to bring more civility into politics. He's head of the National Governors' Conference and that's been his pet project, appearing at events with the governors of Colorado and Maryland. I guess civility only goes so far in Trump's America
  14. His flight to DTW was already booked after yesterday. He'll be in town watching his son play.
  15. I would pick the elimination of alternative viewpoints. Particularly around the issue of slavery and the history of the era leading up to the Civil War. Also the role of women and their contributions to society. While there are good history books written on the subject, it seems that there are forces that are afraid of the truth. The thing is it's been that way for as long as we have had public schools in a lot of areas. I'm glossing over this a bit, but the war on public education has been going on since at least the 60s
  16. While we're throwing polls against the wall, I'll just leave this here
  17. I still want cognitive tests from both candidates. Done by real physicians and psychologists, independent studies.
  18. Just a quick antidote from about 40 plus years ago. We lived in the shadow of Pat Robertson's CBN complex in Va Beach. I'm assuming now it's all part of the Regency University complex. We had a friend who went to work as a bookkeeper for CBN. One day the copying machine in one of the main offices stopped functioning. After a bit of hand wringing The staff gathered around the machine held hands and prayed. Karen walked up to the machine and gave it a quick kick. It started working. Miracles do happen
  19. Five days from Butler and still no word from the Republican candidate's physician. The American people need to know how minor or serious his wound was, and what is his mental condition. Getting shot at and wounded could do some serious damage to a 78 year old's mental well being. https://www.poynter.org/commentary/2024/donald-trump-ear-injury-official-medical-report/
