when i was a manager, i remember that I'd say "every vacation has risk" because invariably someone would take the fact that you were not around to hand hold them through some crisis with the company they would quit.

So, the federal contracting world has a great divide; between the FAR people who work onsite with clients who have to take time off according to a tightly controlled set of rules which does not include sick leave but rather pooled time off which treats an annual vacation the same as COVID; and the back office corporate types who have "unlimited" leave. I would rather be in the first group because if your corporation isn't applying rules to something that means they can judge you about how you use it. "Unlimited" is a trap. So, anything that gives you a day where it isn't your guilt complex about slacking requiring you to not work, is a good thing.
