r/devils - Dougie Hamilton's RAPM Chart (detailing his advanced stats over the past 3 seasons)

Hamilton is a good offensive defenseman, but a below average actual defender, as is shown by RAPM chart (or whatever it's called). We'd be on the hook for $9 mil per year for the next three years, which is cheaper than Karlsson by around $2.5 mil. He's also 3 years younger than Karlsson is. Hamilton doesn't fit the tough, checking, defensively smart, puck clearing defenseman that we need. He'd just be another boost to the offense and we'd have to likely find room for him on the powerplay. I think I'd pass on Hamilton and may even go for the more productive Karlsson if I had to pick between the two.

karlsson has also been healthier...which is funny to say.  but he's played all 82 for three straight seasons.  hamilton has played 20 and 62 the last two years.

karlsson is older and more expensive, but has one less year on his deal.  if youre looking for an asp tutor or what asp's absolute besr case scenario is as a player, its karlsson.

Not sure Beal can score enough to make up for how many points he will allow on defense.

We are also pretty guard heavy.  The only guard I would be looking to add now is a guy who can fill backup PG minutes.

Herb Jones is a guy I would target.  6'8" and could back up both SF/PF positions.  Offense isn't much to write home about, but he did shoot 41% from three two years ago.  He is one of the best perimeter defenders in the league.  1st team all defense two years ago and finished 5th in DPOY.  The 4 guys in front of him were all bigs.  Him and Ausar together would be a nightmare for other teams.

There are zero reasons for New Orleans to trade him.  But it's Joe and Troy, give it a shot and see what happens.  I would give up a heavily protected 1st to land him.  Lottery protected next year and 2027.  Turns into two 2nd round picks in 2028 if it didn't already convey.

its joe and troy youre talking about.  they dont think about abstract notions like "accumulating assets" and "future flexibility".  no sir, those are nerd concepts.  theyre about winning now.  and winning now means one thing: a big man who can rebound!

offer them duren and they'll give you herb jones and THEIR #1 pick.  maybe even two if you catch them in the right mood.

I've never seen that twitter account with the Karlsson rumor, is it popping up anywhere else?  Feels like a guess but who knows

ive heard that rumor before too.  but it might just be one linking a team that supppsedly wants to add (detroit) with one that desperately wants to sell (pens).

if pitt retains no salary then maybe they get a 4th rounder.  if they retain some salary maybe they get a 3rd?

evander kane got a 4th and everyone knew edmonton was desperate to sell.  karlsson probably gets more than kane.  karlsson is still an excellent offensive defensiveman, he just provides zero defense.  think red wings edition paul coffey.

yzerman might have more interest in rust or rakell, but they will require more assets to acquire.

which of their prospects are still new enough to have some shine on them, but they dont actually believe in?  when i think of pittsburgh rumors my initial though is lombardi.  fast and skilled but small.  might be right up dubas' alley.

I was looking through the list of first round goalies drafted over the past 10-15 years. There aren't many of them as we already know. But I read looking to see when I'm their careers and at what age these goalies got called up and asked to play serious minutes. It looks like Andre Vasilevskiy, Jake Oettinger and Ilya Samsanov have thus far been the most successful.

Vasilevskiy came up with Tampa and got serious ice time in the 14-15 season at age 22 it looks like. The next season he got more playing time and stayed up for most the season at age 23. Oettinger was called up at age 22, in the 21-22 season, when Dallas had some injuries. He stayed on the main roster thereafter. For Samsanov he was 22 turning 23 when he got called up with Washington in the 19-20 season.

Cossa will be 23 next season and may not get any NHL minutes unless an injury occurs. While all goalies mature and come into their game differently during their careers, for Cossa to potentially be pushing 24 and not get any real NHL ice time just disappoints at some level. If he simply isn't ready and this is what's best for his development, then so be it. I'll trust Yzerman, his scouts, and his coaching staffs, for now. If he isn't a good player then we're opening up a whole other issue regarding our scouting and drafting of goalies as an organization and Yzerman's decision making to use a first on one.

if you watched grand rapids in the playoffs, you'd know he's not ready.  jesper wellstadt hasnt played either.

askarov was supposed to be the next best thing.  he was drafted a year before cossa.  he's played 16 games.

then devon levi was supposed to be the next big thing, goes to buffalo and now he sucks.

goalies are weird.  that's why you dont usually draft then early, imo.  i didnt want cossa at the time, although nobody drafted behind him has really panned out either yet except wyatt johnston and i'm not sure anyone saw that coming.

but if cossa hits, he could be markstrom.  so lets hope he hits.

btw, jacob markstrom didnt become any good until he was....checks notes....26.

Pretty sure that trade was demanded by ownership.  Believe it or not, the Pelicans were going to be in the luxury tax this year.  That trade got them out of it and saved ownership over $20 million in a tax bill next season.  To do that, they had to take on a few extra years of Poole compared to the CJ contract but at a lower AAV which keeps them out of the luxury tax.

aside from the financials, that trade is only going to help them lose.  which is kind of the point.

  6. who is it on the pelicans who decided that the braintrust of joe dumars and troy weaver was the right choice?

what a cursed franchise.  finally get the shot at a franchise player and it ends up being king cheeseburger the porn star raper.

If Yzerman is banking his career on these prospects as Friedman said then it would be nice if Cossa gets a real shot next year. It looks like he certainly won't to start the season. I'm guessing it will take a significant injury to Gibson or Talbot to see him for anything beyond a couple of games next year. Which is disappointing because he'll be 23 and we spent a disk round pick on him.

    goalies take time.

i wouldnt be disappointed to not see cossa until an iniury hits, and with gibson and talbot in net, it will hit.

i'd be more disappointed if a couple of mazur, danielson, wallinder, buium, asp dont break through next year.

  8. good.  i dont want to bust the bank for ehlers, another small and not physical player.  we already have debrincat, kane, and raymond.  no need to have ehlers on a 7 year deal making as much money as larkin.  he's not as good as larkin.

i'm fine with the offseason considering how things went around the league.

my criticism is that they havent accumulated enough assets to trade for a guy like dobson.  dobson would have been perfect for detroit but montreal could offer multiple firsts and we didnt/couldnt match.  that's the one deal i regret they didnt make.

that's a good deal for washington.  i wish detroit would have done something like that.  bet on potential.

in hindsight, nba execs who passed on whitmore (who was rumored to be a top 5 pick), have been right and draftniks were wrong.  so far.  we'll see if whitmore can flourish with more playing time.

Would we be interested in a 3-way if we were receiving Josh Giddey instead?

    nope.

he needs the ball in his hands and cade already does that.  cade is also a much better player.  giddey thrived on the bulls' late season schedule of tanking teams and resting teams.  remember when the bulls gave up 71 points IN THE FIRST HALF against the heat in the play in game?  ladies and gentlemen, i give you josh giddey's defensive nous.

he improved once they let the black hole of zack lavine leave, but giddey is really a good offensive sparkplug more than a guy who carries a team, imo.

otoh, if you believe the 3 point shooting is real, then he could be a very useful player.  just not in detroit because his game is too much like cade's and youre not getting him for less than $30m a season at this rate.

plus he really likes 15 year old girls but that's another subject for another day...

let the bulls cap themselves out with a core of two dudes who play zero defense and are streak scorers in white and giddey.  no need for detroit to do that.

  11. so glad this isn't us anymore.

imagine some other team having to confirm MULTIPLE TIMES that you really offered them all of that.  practically telling you in plain english they would take less.

damn joe.  i expect that from troy's dumb ass but at least you USED to be smart.

  12. half of these trades are about accumulating salaries, or getting under an apron or a tier, or slotting a salary into someone else's exception.  so who knows what monk brings?  it could be his particular contract terms rather than his actual basketball skill.

unless you're a complete basketball salary junkie, its hard to know.
