Would we be interested in a 3-way if we were receiving Josh Giddey instead?
nope.
he needs the ball in his hands and cade already does that. cade is also a much better player. giddey thrived on the bulls' late season schedule of tanking teams and resting teams. remember when the bulls gave up 71 points IN THE FIRST HALF against the heat in the play in game? ladies and gentlemen, i give you josh giddey's defensive nous.
he improved once they let the black hole of zack lavine leave, but giddey is really a good offensive sparkplug more than a guy who carries a team, imo.
otoh, if you believe the 3 point shooting is real, then he could be a very useful player. just not in detroit because his game is too much like cade's and youre not getting him for less than $30m a season at this rate.
plus he really likes 15 year old girls but that's another subject for another day...
let the bulls cap themselves out with a core of two dudes who play zero defense and are streak scorers in white and giddey. no need for detroit to do that.

half of these trades are about accumulating salaries, or getting under an apron or a tier, or slotting a salary into someone else's exception. so who knows what monk brings? it could be his particular contract terms rather than his actual basketball skill.
unless you're a complete basketball salary junkie, its hard to know.

nba salary cap rules are so ****ing ridiculous.
it really ruins a lot of the sport. just let teams make trades. stop with all the damn tiers, and levels, and contract matching. its insane.

We might learn something about their pro scouting if they end up trading Larkin for a young NHL player or two and some high end prospects.
that was one big question for yzerman that still hasnt been answered: should he have dealt larkin to help the rebuild?
i still lean toward no considering his deal is now very affordable.

what we dont know is what guys the wings pursued who just didnt want to come here.
the capitals were in a similar position to detroit in the standings two years ago, made a lot of moves that some people thought were crazy given their supposed mushy middle team, and then finished as a top seed. the canadiens made the playoffs for god's sake.
a lot of players the caps signed were players the wings could have used. we dont know if they were interested and told no.
but its hard to argue that their pro scouting has been good for the past two years. perron? good. waldman? good. copp? overpaid but ok. chairot? overpaid but ok.
tarasenko? gustafson? holl?
come on. dont tell me they were all the market would give. they were terrible last year and probably cost them a playoff run.
i'm much more sypathetic to the argument that stevie inherited garbage and it take 10 years to do a real rebuild of an entire organization. he started in 2019.
he hasnt saddled the organization with any really back breaking deals. his best players are BARGAINS right now. and the team is still set up to have resources when seider/raymond hit their primes. that should start in 2 years.
dont make panic deals so tater is happy we won the offseason but saddles you with stamkos or marssesault or provorov for the next 6 years.
i wanted them to go big this offseason. but the only real big name was marner and he wasnt coming here. im ok skipping spending big money on 6 years of marchand's decline or ekblad's ped suspensions.
(now watch him ruin this by signing ehlers for huge money)
im ok with how this offseason has gone but i do want to see some youth in the lineup. hopefully danielson or wallinder or buium or mazur or lombardi can force their way onto the team next year.

The D looks better...
IF
A couple "not ready yet" prospects make a great leap forward (sorry Mao. Actually... NOT sorry):
Seider - one of Buium or Wallinder if they can take a huge step forward...
Edvinsson - Tuomisto (if he can...)
Chiarot - Albert or Holl or Gustaffson or Mitchell
bench D - whoever loses out but isn't bought out (I'm looking at you Holl and Gustaffson...).
Obviously, I made that a very, VERY big IF for a reason which doesn't even need to be stated.
Don't hold your breath, I'm not holding mine... and I would have preferred Miller or Dobson same as you except for the cost...
I'm just sayin'... (should I have made that IF bigger...?)
the d looks better if every prospect they have suddenly becomes top pair nhl ready even though none of them have shown that ability in GR yet.
that's true. highly unlikely, but true.

yes 84, just because he was drafted by your favorite team doesnt mean he's going to work out. 🙂
he's likely an ahl player who comes up during an injury crisis for someone. if he was anything more than that, he would have shown it already. he's almost 25 now and this will be his 3rd season in grand rapids.
i hope he proves me wrong. he could make the team out of camp. he's big enough to play in the nhl for sure. but from everything i read, the prospects people talk about on defense are wallinder, buium, and asp. with asp being the only one people talk about as a future top 4 guy. the rest are bottom pair at best.
but i dont know, thats what other people say. and honestly, that's what most second round picks end up being. it would be a shame is NONE of yzerman's top of the round second rounders developed into something more than that. especially considering who some of them were taken in front of.
i still have hopes for wallinder and buium, but not a ton of hope...

Ex-Wing Pius Suter is unsigned so far, by the way. He was a bargain last year with 25G 21A on a $1.6mm cap hit but need to stay away from him if gets a rumoured $20mm contract.
sign suter as what? a 3c?
if they cant sign ehlers - and i dont think they should - then i'm fine with kasper on the wing for the top line. he was great at that last year. copp centering kane and debrincat worked well too. as we all know, its the bottom six that were a complete disaster. jvr should help there. mazur might too. suter might be a good 3c and send compher to the 4th line or the wing. but then where is danielson? gr?
kasper-larkin-raymond
debrincat-copp-kane
jvr-suter-berggren
ras-compher-soderblom
where do mazur and danielson fit?
i still think the bigger need is on D. no gavrikov, but there might be a bargain down there stevie can shake loose. miller fit the bill but i wouldnt give a first, second, and a good prospect. call up buium or wallinder and call it a day.
seider-chairot
edvinsson-aljo
gustafsson-holl/wallinder/buium
ugh that defense is not good.

OK this is looking a lot better now.
A) We can dump him next year if it doesn't work.
B) Other teams looking to dump salary might target him in a trade. Assuming they have something we want.
jaylen brown? derrick white?

I personally wanted Wallinder to step up in his bigger role in Grand Rapids last season, but he never really seemed to. He's a tall, toolsy guy that we're still waiting on to put it all together. He also seems kinda soft. I thought what little I saw of Buium live last season, he seemed pretty solid as a second pairing guy for GR, but did seem to make some mistakes in his own zone/neutral zone. Buium is probably the "closest" to the NHL of the three GR defense from last season in my mind, but Wallinder has a higher ceiling if everything clicks.
It's a shame Anton Johansson went back to play for his dad's team in Sweden because he seemed to do pretty well in his short Griffins stint last season.
johannson is the one getting the most buzz. wallinder and buium already passed by him and likely asp.
tuomisto will likely be back in europe or in the ahl for a while. i guess if you just need size...

Maybe I'm wrong here...
But I believe Tuomisto, and Buium, and Wallinder will be getting LOTS of chances with Detroit this year.
Sometimes it takes guys longer to make it to the NHL, and that's especially true of the taller guys (Tuomisto = 6'5") who often struggle with coordination a couple of years. And a Finnish player to boot getting used to the smaller/ faster north American rink.
I think Tuomisto is right on time.
Even without 150 NHL games under his belt.
I'll let Yzerman and his team figure that out.
Interesting though... that they gave Tuomisto a two-way this year...
They gave JBD a two-way contract also... right? Because he has a better chance of playing in Detroit than Tuomisto, per what you are telling us.
Do I have that correct?
tuomisto has a lot of work to do to make the nhl.

This is not a bad signing day for Yzerman. A bad day would have been signing bad contracts to fill cap space for the heck of it. It isn’t a great day, because no upgrade yet, but it’s not a bad day.
im glad we didnt beat the canes' offer for miller. first, second, and a young d prospect.

ceci and lindgren get paid by OTHER teams. that's absosmurfly fine.

that's a good deal for washington. i wish detroit would have done something like that. bet on potential.
in hindsight, nba execs who passed on whitmore (who was rumored to be a top 5 pick), have been right and draftniks were wrong. so far. we'll see if whitmore can flourish with more playing time.
